Long March on Newport

Taking inspiration from the Chartists who marched on Newport long before NATO was heard of, our Long March will be a colourful and vibrant, visual opposition to NATO - that will meander purposefully through Wales during the month of August arriving in Newport by 30th to deliver the message 'No to war! No to austerity! No to NATO!'

Some people will walk, others will cycle (two legs good, two wheels better). Whether you can join us for an hour, a day or for longer - don't miss out! We're getting ready to join up the dots and plan our route now. If you want the route to come near you, we need to know pronto!

Benefit gig 10th April

This Thursday we are hosting a benefit gig in Cardiff, featuring some of the finest protest folk music in the world:

David Rovics is probably the foremost singer of political folk music of his generation. He has released 22 albums with well over 200 songs for free download. Based in Portland, USA, David seems to be constantly on a never ending world tour, every time he visits Cardiff it's to play a benefit for something important. Cosmo is one of them activist musician types who approaches every picket line or demonstration as an opportunity to sing and play, if you attend protests in Cardiff, you're bound to have seen him.  Though an Hungarian Scottish-born Cockney, he's been based in south Wales for years. His new album "Vote Nobody" is probably his best sounding so far, and well worth the cost of a free download: cosmoguitar.net

Eirlys Rhiannon is a Cardiff native who recently returned to the city after years of living in Canada. Her captivating voice and powerful songs blew everyone away at our last Cardiff benefit in February, so we've got her back quickly, but not too soon. Listen to her music: eirlysrhiannon.com

Benefit gig 14th March

This Friday we will be having a fund raising concert, with music from three great singer songwriters of the acoustic-anarcho-folk-punk variety with lots of comedy and satire.

It takes place at Le Pub in Caxton Place, a minute walk from Newport Train Station.

The event starts at 8pm and the three acts will perform in the following order:

Efa Supertramp - She's young, energetic and original. Her songs are angry but uplifting and passionate, she hates money, power and greed but loves living life as free as she can. She has toured all over the UK and Europe, playing in protests, squats, street corners, living rooms, bars and festivals.

Cosmo - a one-man anarcho-folk-punk-hiphop phenomenon! His energetic shows fuse sharp comedy with ruthless social satire and high octane passion. Over the years of criss-crossing the country with just a beat-up guitar, he has forged a position as a unique chronicler of the underbelly of UK life.

Captain Hotknives - Tackling subjects such as begging, solvent abuse, pigeon hypnosis, skankin yr nana, the pathetic nature of petty racism and the terrible quality of muffins on trains, the lyrics are improvised stories over simple riffs. Having found that giving up on success brings an artistic freedom of sorts, you may well meet him in a field but probably not see him on any telly. Captain Hotknives is also occasionally to be found playing bass for Babar Luck.

It's £4 entry on the door, but advance tickets are only £2 and are currently available from Diverse Music and Kriminal Records.

Though Le Pub is open until the early hours of the morning and you are welcome to stay until last orders, the live music should be finished before midnight.

Protest the NATO Summit

No to NATO. No to War. No to Austerity.

Wales could see its biggest protests in a generation as 60 world leaders meet at the Celtic Manor in Newport for the NATO summit on 4th -5th September to plan their war on the world. Previous summits in Chicago and Strassbourg saw thousands protest war, austerity and global inequality. From August 30th people will flock to South Wales for international actions including a weekend march and Counter Summit, week-long peace camp, and protests on the summit’s opening day. NATO is the nuclear-armed military alliance binding Europe to US foreign policy, a foreign policy post-Iraq increasingly unpopular around the world. It is also the military alliance currently occupying Afghanistan. War is the enemy of the poor. The world's 85 richest people have as much as poorest 3.5 billion. The annual sum needed to end world hunger is $30 billion while the US Military's budget is $530 billion per year.  Money into war is money out of our communities. In the UK, 500,000 people had to resort to food banks last year. While public services are slashed, one day of war in Afghanistan could fund 100,000 nurses. This autumn the powerful will  make their voices heard at the NATO summit. We must make sure that the voice of the millions around the world who need peace and justice is also heard.
