beginner witch tips
you don't have to join a coven but you also don't have to be solitary
you don't have to be pagan or religious but you also don't have to denounce religion
you can use whatever tools you want or none at all - you can use energy work in place of physical items
you can thrift supplies or grab some from the dollar tree instead of spending a bunch of money online or at a metaphysical shop
you can form your own opinions about the things you learn about vs taking their word for it especially online but in written texts as well
you don't have to be a certain type of witch - eclectic does just fine if you want to label it as such
if you do choose to label yourself, you don't have to do things that exist only within that label (sea witches can work with other elements, moon witches can work with other planets, etc.)
you don't have to read tarot cards for divination - there are lots of other methods
you don't have to do divination at all
you can work with more than one energy at a time (think moon and sun, or water and fire)
you don't have to do things the way other folks do
that's all i got for now

Witchcraft Book Recommendation Lists
(Reposting again bc tumblr turned off the reblogs on the original wtf. From an answer to an inquiry in the witchcraft tags. Decided to repost for anyone else who might need it.)
Here’s the post I made with recommendations for green witchcraft and plant magic. The list includes magical resources and accompanying practical texts on botany, herbology, and medicinal plants.
Here’s the post I made with recommendations for general witchcraft study, including practical sources on the history of modern witchcraft. (In particular, I recommend Margot Adler’s “Drawing Down The Moon” and Ronald Hutton’s “The Triumph of the Moon” for information about the modern movement.)
Here’s a recent photo of my personal library, if you’re looking for a general list of titles to check out.
Here’s the post I made with a list of JSTOR articles I’ve found that relate to witchcraft, witch trials, folk magic, occult beliefs, superstition, and the history surrounding all of them. It’s not exhaustive, but it’s pretty comprehensive.
And here are a couple of masterlists of podcast episodes that deal with witchcraft, witch trials, the history of witchcraft-related beliefs, and resources for fact-checking and debunking misconceptions and misinformation commonly found in witchcraft spaces.
(Also I have published a few books on practical secular witchcraft, if you’re interested….)
You can also find additional recommendations in the "book recs" and "witchy books" tags on my blog.
Hope this helps!
(If you’re enjoying my content, please feel free to drop a little something in the tip jar or check out my published works on Amazon or in the Willow Wings Witch Shop. 😊)

About grimoire making
All those 24 years of practicing witchcraft my grimoire literally was a large shoebox filled with notes, ideas, recipes, how-to's etcetera from things I got tested and things I work with. A few weeks ago I reached the moment that I couldn't close the box anymore because it was so full. After throwing away the things I didn't want to perform in my witchcraft from today I decided that I finally would like to have a book in which I collect everything.
All those years I was to lazy to call my box the complete word grimoire and it became the shorter grima instead.
I started in a paperblanks book and the drawing is so meditative that I came to the conclusion that making a grima is actually an act of self care. It is me-time and it puts my brains to rest. That is quite important, as a healthcare worker and musician/music student I need those selfcare moments.
Update: I started in another bigger book. I couldn't get used to a small book and I wanted to add thoughtform magic binded onto the drawing of the first page. I can't show it anymore, it is to personal and I don't want to get other energy than mine in my book. If people want I can share in the future how the thoughtform was binded to the book, but not now on this moment.
You all be lucky, sometimes I can share things about methods, magical exercises/training I did. If I find something interesting in my box, I will share it.
Simple Ways to Practice Magick Everyday
Say a small prayer or do a short meditation before you get out of bed in the morning.
Write down dreams or visions you had.
Stir your first cup of coffee or tea counterclockwise to banish negativity and bad luck or clockwise to bring positive energy.
Draw daily tarot or oracle cards (you can also use a pendulum) for guidance.
Cleansing yourself and home using sound or smoke.
Ancestor or spirit offerings
Pick out your clothes, shoes, jewelry... ect with intention.
Write a sigil or petition paper and burn it.
Take a ritual shower. You can spice it up with candles, herbs, and crystals, or you can simply step under the water and imagine all the negativity and bad energy washing off you. You can also recite a chant.
Every time you look into the mirror, say an affirmation
Take a walk outside and ground yourself to Mother Earth.
Dance!! Dancing is an excellent way to rise the energy, and it helps with opening the sacral and solar plexus chakra and getting in touch with the inner child.

Items to include in your Book of Shadows
Everyone’s book will be different because all Witches are different. This list is a bunch of examples I have come across over the years of things you could include in your BOS if you so desired. Nothing on this list is mandatory, nothing here is required. If you don’t know what something is, please feel free to ask! If you don’t think that something on the list is for you, awesome, don’t include it in yours.

Let's talk about the Book of Shadows!
Many new witches have been taught that your book of Shadows or BOS is your spell book, your encyclopedia of your witchcraft knowledge.
While this is true, this is not all there is to your book of Shadows.
Let's talk a bit about what Shadow is.
In witchcraft, when we speak about shadow, we often mean our past. The past of ourselves, our lived experiences, and also our souls past. As witches, we strive to reconcile our past to our present to best empower our future.
So how do we combine these two things?
To understand how to add shadow to your wealth of magical information, you first need to understand what a book of Shadows actually is.
A BOS is first and foremost a journal. It's a record of your path, your work, your journey through witchcraft. It's more than regurgitated information, it's a scientific log book. A written history of your successes and more importantly, your failures.
Your BOS is yours, so you can include what you wish within its pages. You can have several books, binders digital storage files, or all of the above. There are no rules or limitations on how you organize your information.
To make your BOS the best it can be, there are some things that you need to unlearn.
First, disregard and throw away the notion of your book of Shadows ever being "finished". Your BOS should only be finished the day your spiritual path is finished, the day your body fails you and your spirit moves on to the next life. Then and only then should your BOS be completed.
Secondly, don't worry about perfection. It doesn't exist, and perfect looks different for each person. Your BOS is an extension of you, your path, your journey. Torn pages, creases, wax stains, scribbles, all are what makes your journey unique and they help to tell your story.
Third, and most importantly, embrace mistakes. Failures, missteps, screw ups, these are the most important things to keep track of. These help you grow. You cannot be embarrassed by your own life. You can only learn from it. Do not worry about what people think about your path, it's yours and yours alone. Embrace it.
Now to combine it with shadow, you need to sit down and write about your path, your story, your journey.
Write about how the spell you worked has begun working in your favor. Write about the consequences your faced after doing that hex, write down the physical effects you felt when you were mixing mugwort with lavender in your nightly tea. Keep a page open for your gods to come through in automatic writing. Write down a recipe for incense, soup, healing salves and whatever else.
Your BOS is yours, no one else's. Make it a beautiful history of your life.
Added the potential sigil I mentioned earlier (I think for now it’ll just function as an emblem/signature for witchy stuff cause I can’t think of a specific purpose), as well as a slightly shortened version of the poem/prayer/psalm? that I wrote and posted earlier.
This is all in the inner cover of my book of shadows. The grimoire will also have this emblem (maybe refined a little idk) and, given more page space cause bigger book, the full prayer without the last line and amen cut.
