you're so real for the take on gifs. i used to run a highly popular teen wolf gif and screen caps account back in the day with a few friends (we had a couple thousand followers) and never charged anything for our gifs or caps. we did it because we loved the show, and seeing people use our stuff for rp was always so cool.

i get that it takes time, but what happened to just doing things for the love of it and not for the monetary gain? i might be too old school but i remember when everything was free. psds, gif hunts, themes, etc. now, everything is trapped behind a paywall, and it is harming the community tbh; at least in my opinion.

at this point, you gotta know how to make your own gifs, psds, and code your own themes if you want anything nice and not have to pay an entrance fee just to participate. rp shouldn't be a pay-to-play hobby, it sucks the life out of the community. i'm convinced the greed that has sprouted in the last couple of years is a large contributing factor to the current dying state of rp as a whole

you're very right!!! there's a lot of things that have contributed to the downfall of rp:tm: on tumblr but the exclusivity mindset is the biggest imo. and imo it just doesn't apply to paid gifs — themes being paid, everything shrinking in size being an accessibility nightmare, people being cliquey, this overemphasis on aesthetics and fancy intro pages and stats posts without wanting to plot bc you think you're too good to brainstorm with a stranger. but the most egregious and obvious is that now it's normal to pay like 30 dollars to use the fc you want to's resources. i understand wanting to protect your hard work esp when people use gifs for weird shit or claim gifs as their own, but i'm in probably 15-20 gif servers at this point and have filled out literal application forms for gifs. even getting free ones is difficult sometimes. there's no sense of putting things out in the world, writing or resource wise, and hoping someone will come and join you in loving this weird lil hobby.

it’s hard because whenever someone brings up the price it takes rp nowadays, everyone says “well it’s not like you HAVE to use premium resources” but it’s like… we DO. most rp oriented themes are behind paywalls now, plus the rp community is very snobbish and only rp with muns that use specific resources and make their blogs look a certain way which costs money to do.

i understand this stuff costs a lot of time and energy to do, but it’s not like it didn’t take time back when these things were free and more readily available. it’s just that before there used to be this community-positive mindset that we don’t really have anymore. doing things for the sake of helping others further enjoy this hobby is rare.

you're exactly right!!! it's a 'me me me' mindset that has infiltrated the community. i know a lot of people are acting out of financial need (though honestly i think a good amount of people just see others doing that and go 'well i can make some money too!') and want to make gainz anywhere they can, but it is truly a disease of capitalism that every single hobby needs to be absorbed into side hustle culture. i'd rather us go gifless and use default themes than keep feeding into this... bc like, what's the alternative? people use the dwindling amount of free gifs? people save up so they can use one fc for one chara at a time?

girl do not even get me started LMAO. it is highway robbery. i'm unopposed to commissions but paywalls are so icky to me, especially when someone already PAYS the commission and then you get a bunch of other people to pay to access them too!!!! like babe, we all know it is not out of a sense of fairness 2 the buyer but so you can make more $$ off the same gifs. rp as a hobby used to be so different :( i don't post often, but no gifs on this blog will ever have a paywall!!!!

we've shifted from a fast food gif economy (fast after episode/movie release, quick bites of single episodes, cheap/mostly free, sometimes lq/even gifs hunts acceptable) to a fine dining gif economy (inaccessible, expensive, completionist in regards to season/even a person's filmography, higher quality, often custom/bespoke). also some people are a little TOO into the new turkish and/or korean place in their neighborhood
