Left Wing Online feminism: Pro-sex
Summary of my research:
I started by searching for activists that cover the concept of Sex Positivity such as the philosopher: Amia Srinivasan.
Amia Srinivasan is the author of a collection entitled ‘The right of Sex’. She studied for an undergraduate degree in philosophy at Yale University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. This was followed by a postgraduate Bachelor of Philosophy at University of Oxford. Furthermore, she was elected as a prize fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, and received various other awards.
Moreover, me and my partner decided to create a profile on Tumblr, as it is highly accessible; free of charges; hugely utilised by teenangers, allowing me to particularly raise more awarenesss among students; and lastly it’s a platform largely recognised.
Attentively, I researched key points of primary ethnographic information: definitions, news, articles and twitter pages - concerning the respective online movement, and displayed all my findings on the left wing online feminist movement: Sex positivity
I made sure that all my findings were well articulated yet unchallenging to comprehend for a student. For example, one of my findings was an article from the fashion website ‘Elle India’ concerning the designs that were displayed on the Milan fashion week runway, from the collaboration of Diesel X Durex “featuring almost 200.000 strategically placed condoms”. By doing so I added: subheadings, quotations, clear images, statistics and definitions.
Additionally , I created a survey to provide quantitative data and have an overall view of what the general public thinks of the argument.
I presented a clear title and offered an unequivocal introduction explaining the purpose of the research. I made sure that the participants were aware that their identities would’ve been anonymous as I did not collect their emails. However the participants had the choice to willingly send their email if able to partake in an interview.
I started with basic demographic questions ( such as: gender, age, etc…) to have a better understanding of the background of the participants.
I focused more on questions relating to the understanding Sex Positivity displayed by the participants, and their opinion on activities that may cause harm, such as pornography. I strictly avoided the usage of leading questions as it aided me to comprehend their perspective on a better level, and additionally added the opinion ‘other’ to permit a wide range of answers that would suit the participant better.
While the survey was still active, I developed a few questions for the purpose of the interviews. It was necessary to provide qualitative data as it helps to understand people’s opinion in depth due to their different experiences. It was refreshing for the report to have a close understanding of two individuals, by seeing their reactions and reflections, as I had two participants. These questions were largely open-ended, allowing the participants to speak freely about their experience, as well as the use of follow-up questions or socratic prompts.
I organised two individual zoom calls.
The interview helped me to realise how our generation in particular is extremely open minded and willing to explore new aspects of life, as both of the participants were 18 and stated how sex positivity is fundamental as “it could help the physical and mental stet of an individual”
All the answers were written manually and, additionally, recorded with my phone so as not to leave out any essential information.
The survey was in circulation for one week.
I personally contacted online feminist movement pages such as ‘The Empowered Feminist’ and the coach and relationship mentor Rena Martine, yet failed to get a response.
