He tried to comfort her as much as possible. âDont be sorry. You have nothin t'be sorry forâŚâ He kissed the back of her hand gently. It was starting to get dark out, but the town was already asleep.
âI donât know what i did wrongâŚâ she said softly, squeezing Kevinâs hand again. Karen looked over at Kevin and smiled softly. âIâm so glad to have you Kev. Youâre a good brother.â She patted his hand and leaned her head against the window.
He smiled softly and looked over at her for a second. âYou have no idea how lucky I am to have you in my life. If ya hadnât come back, id still be shootin up heroinâŚâ Kevin kept driving slowly, under the speed limit to reduce the bumps along the road.
Karen hummed, looking back over at Kevin with a big smile. âYouâre my favourite, donât tell Ken though.â She laughed, leaning back in her seat. âAre we there yet?â
Kevin couldnât help but chuckle, âDonât worry. Next time i see him ill brag for hours on how im the favorite.â They pulled into the parking lot and Kevin mumbled a soft yeah before parking.
Karen giggled, shaking her head, âNoooooo.â She laughed, gasping in excitement once they were in the parking lot. She unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the door, swinging her legs out of the truck but looking back at Kevin. âI donât think i can get downâŚâ
He climbed out of the truck as well, closing his door as he walked to her side of the truck. âI gotcha. Ill carry ya. Dont forget your bottle.â He waited for her to grab it before picking her up gently.
Karen grabbed the bottle and held on around Kevinâs neck, leaning her head on his shoulder. She was pretty light, almost concerningly, but her frame was pretty small. âMy stomach feels weird.â She mumbled, looking up at her brother.
He glanced up at her, âI liked it better when you drank beer. At least it had caloriesâŚâ As soon as she mentioned her stomach, he huffed. âPuke on me and your doing laundry for a month.â
âDonât worry about me. I eat food.â Karen tilted her head to the side a bit. âNoooo itâs not that. Itâs tingly. I think it hurts.â she mumbled, looking down and seeing blood starting to come through her white shirt. âAwe⌠i liked this shirtâŚâ
"Ill buy you another one just like it. Are ya just now feelin the cuts?" He carried her up the stairs and finally into the apartment. He shut the door behind him and carried her to the bathroom.

Karen sat on the edge of the road, not too far from the park. She held a bottle of whiskey in one hand and her backpack in the other. Her jeans and jacket were both ripped to shreds and full of dirt and grass stains, her hair all in big clumps, knotted together. She took a drink from her bottle while she waited for Kevin.
He was driving slow just encase she was passed out in the road or something like that. Kevin saw her and sighed, pulling over near her. He saw her scraped skin and ripped clothes, worry instantly filling him.
Karen stood up carefully, stumbling a bit and grabbing onto the truck. She struggled to climb into the truck, setting her bottle in the cup holder and scooting over, cuddling into her older brother. She smelled like booze, cigarettes and perfume. The girl wiped her face of tears and whimpered softly, holding her brotherâs sleeve tightly.
He put the truck in park, unbuckling to pull his tiny sister into his lap. He pulled her mess of hair back and put it up in a ponytail with a tie she had around her wrist. âWhat happened t'ya?â His voice was soft and sad, hating to see his little sister cry.
Karen held tightly onto her brother, wiping her eyes with a torn sleeve. âI got jumped.â She mumbled, looking up at Kevin. âSome girls followed me home n beat me up.â Karenâs speech was pretty slurred as she held onto Kevin. She was honestly a mess.
Kevin kissed her forehead and held her closer. âAny cuts or stab wounds i should know âbout?â He knew she would be bruised for days maybe even weeks but those were more minor compared to a stab or scrape that could get infected. Kevin wiped some new tears that had fallen off her cheeks.
Karen lifted her shirt a bit to reveal âslutâ carved into her stomach. It was still bleeding but at this point she barely felt it. âThatâs it i thinkâŚâ she said softly, whimpering when she put her shirt back down. âI have scrapes on my knees n elbows n hands too but not as bad.â
He sighed heavily, planning to beat the shit out of the girl who touched his little sister. "Okay... Well go home and ill give ya a bath. Well eat something and then well go t'bed okay?" He moved her back into her seat, helping her buckle before doing the same for himself. He held her hand as he drove home.
