EDITOR: I received a call of good news last week from Sam Owens telling me about the future of Picket Post Produce. The former location was lost after a fire destroyed the building. There was a community fundraiser to help her start over and that is exactly what she has been working on ever since. She was able to acquire a half acre lot located on Highway 11 just before the bridge that crosses over Highway 183. She has gravel in place and wants to have a concrete floor. She has regular hours with her frugal start up, Thursday through Sunday 12-5PM. The community is rallying again for her with a fundraiser planned July 18, 10AM-4PM at the Sundance Mountain Farm, 170 Lewin Way, Tamassee. Sam plans to build back Picket Post Produce for the community who has supported her. LRMartin

It is a follow-up of the story I sent a few weeks ago announcing that Clemson College Department of Agriculture planned to establish a cheese factory at the Tamassee DAR School. CHOICE CHEESE FROM "CHOY" BEING PRODUCED - (The following story was in the June 9, 1918 Keowee Courier). . .A new enterprise for Oconee county is Cheohee Cheese Factory, of Tamassee, which has recently been incorporated with a capital stock of $1,200. The plant is located on the land of the Tamassee Industrial School. The trade name is “Choy Cheese is Choice.” (“Cheohee” is pronounced “Choy.”). . .This is one of the war-time industries that is encouraged by the government. Among the stockholders are thirty of the leading farmers of the community. . .The milk is from about 75 cows that will be used at first, and as the plant grows the number of cows will be increased.

EDITOR: The Old Salem Post took a vacation last week. When you get an invitation to go on your granddaughter’s senior trip, who can say no to that? Especially when that girl is about to go off to college far, far away in about 2 weeks. Lord willing, I plan to visit her and see places across our nation I have never experienced. ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester TAMASSEE-SALEM GIRLS' TEAM WON 26 STRAIGHT GAMES IN 1979-80 - (The following story was in the March 19, 1980 Keowee Courier). . .When the Tamassee-Salem girls' basketball team met Bowman for the state 1-A basketball championship Friday in Newberry, it was a battle between two teams with a combined winning streak of 105 games--79 for Bowman and 26 for the Eagles. . .Unfortunately for Tamassee-Salem, it was Bowman's winning streak that was still alive when the game ended, as they won their 80th game in a row, over the past four seasons, 47-38. . .Tamassee-Salem led 26-24 at halftime but Bowman took the lead, 36-33, at the end of the third quarter. . .Maria McSwain scored 17 points to lead the Eagles. . .Tamassee-Salem finished the season with a 26-2 record, losing only their first and last games while winning 26 in a row in between. . .Making this record even more amazing is the fact that the entire team will return next year, and the top three scorers--McSwain, Diane Head and Gail Cantrell--will only be juniors. . .Last year the Eagles had a 21-4 record, making their combined record the past two seasons 47-6.

HEALTH TIP: Time to check for ticks after being outdoors. There are some things you can do to help prevent taking one home. Some people spray their shoes with insect repellent. Wear light-weight long sleeved shirts, hats, and pants, for some protection. Brush off your clothing before going into the house. Check your children for ticks. Remove gently with tweezers and cleanse the area with soap and water and apply a little alcohol to the area. Wash your hands thoroughly. Seek medical attention if you develop any symptoms of infection at the site or Lyme Disease such as fever, malaise, rash, swollen joints, mental status changes, or headache.

Levi’s parents called him in to discuss his poor report card. “ Mom and Dad, what do you think the trouble is with me? Heredity or environment?” 2. Father‘s comment to mother “ Well at least this report says George is not taking any mind expanding drugs!” 3. Little Jeffy handing his report card to his father: “Dad, here is my report card AND one I found of yours in the attic…” Tee Hee HA Ha howdee Ho Ho!!! Knee Slappers ALL!!! Long, director of extension work, Department of Agriculture, of Clemson College, plans to establish a chain of cheese factories for Oconee, Pickens, Greenville and Spartanburg counties. . .Oconee is fortunate in getting the first one, which will be located on the D.A.R. School property, a few hundred yards below the school building. . .The construction of the building will be pushed rapidly, so that the doors of the factory can be opened for business by early summer. ARE YOU A COMPLAINER OR DO YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT A PROBLEM: When you see potholes do you call the State or County office to report? When you see a bag of trash that has blown out of an uncovered vehicle do you call the Litter Officer and report it? Charges can be brought against the culprit if a name and address are found in the contents. Do you report dangerous areas on the roadway that are potential hazards or where repeated accidents have occurred? I reported an area on North Highway 11 close to Salem Stone , the new McNeely Hardware store and Jocassee Valley Brewing Company. There is a hill located in this area where vehicles are “flying” over the speed limit and where several accidents have occurred, mostly from people trying to turn into the businesses. I called the Highway Department in the past requiring about a flashing light or something, but was not really given any help. But last night, after another accident occurred I contacted Senator Thomas Alexander via email. In no time at all he responded to me that he will ask for a DOT study to see if there is anything that can be done to promote safety in that area. It is wonderful to have Senators and House Representatives that are personable, local, concerned, and try to help us. Our local ones have been in office for many years. But I find them very responsive and helpful! LRM Oconee County Road Maintenance and State Road Maintenance— Be proactive and a part of the solution every time you see or hit a POTHOLE! Report potholes and any other danger you identify involving the roads, like dead leaning trees. Report the road name and describe the location of the problem. HEALTH TIP: Do you beat yourself up every time you “fail” in your health routine? Each day is a new beginning. Like scripture, even if you have read a verse several times in your lifetime, it is new and refreshing and often shines a new light because of what is currently happening in your life. We all fail at something. We eat too much. We don’t take time for ourselves or exercise. We forget a birthday. We promise to get something done, but run out of energy. We are human. Forgive yourself. Ask others to forgive you when needed. Then start fresh tomorrow. As Grandma used to say, “ Honey, tomorrow is another day. If it is not, then it won’t matter anyway!”

Happy Mother’s Day in Heaven Mom: Our mom made biscuits in a special bowl as long as I can remember for our family. She kept it in a deep kitchen drawer filled with sifted flour and covered with a linen cloth. For years that bowl came out for about every meal as kneaded shortening and milk to the right texture to form small, perfectly formed biscuits with her own hands. We had a small tin for “baby biscuits” that we often requested for her to fill. Homemade gravy was often a part of our menu made from the fat drippings of whatever meat we were having for supper. Supper was served in our small kitchen with us all around the table. I have that special bowl now. I have special precious memories of our family being brought up in that small house in Salem and the meals we shared in that small kitchen filled with love. We were a blessed family with a hard working father and a wonderful precious mother and now memories! LRMartin Blessings!

EDITOR: Coming home is always a sweet welcoming this time of year. Our long driveway is a natural arbor of mountain laurels in full bloom. These breath-taking floral beauties are short-lived making the scene all the more precious. Similar to this is our beautiful Oconee County. Our landscape of trees, mountain views, farms, agriculture, native flowers, wildlife, water supply, flowing rivers, lakes, and trails are going to be a only a memory if we do not make a plan to protect this place we call home. THE CLOSING HYMN was “I love to tell the story.” 2) the Well loved former pastor at Cheohee Baptist Church announced that he had been asked to join the choir. Pastor had been asked to sing. Pastor was requested to sing ON A HILL FAR AWAY. 3) A six-year-old boy, informed his mother that he liked to go to church with her, especially when the congregation sang that animal song. The mother was puzzled. She told her son that she couldn’t remember the Animal song. ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester SALEM HIGH 1961 GOINGS-ON REPORTED - (The November 15, 1961 issue of the Keowee Courier contained a report from Salem High School with the heading "Salem High Lights." It was written by teacher Nelle Rochester who later became the school's assistant principal. The report was quite long, so I will include some of the items this week and more over the next three weeks). . .SALEM HIGH LIGHTS - Since I haven't been writing the weekly column of the Salem High News since school began, I shall take this opportunity to bring my readers up-to-date on the things that have been happening around Salem. . .SALEM WINS IMPROVEMENT AWARD - The Salem Community Club entered the Oconee County Community Improvement Contest and finished third in the judging of nine communities. The club was awarded $75 in cash which will be applied to the community house. . .TEEN CANTEEN ORGANIZED - The school faculty organized the Salem Teen Canteen which is open every Thursday night from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Two teachers, the superintendent, and at least two parents are always present to serve as chaperones. . .Membership is open only to Salem School students, with dues set at 50 cents for the entire school year. The average attendance has been about 50 students per week. . .Activities include basketball, skating, table tennis, bingo, and various table games such as Monopoly. Music is provided by a record player. . .The canteen will be closed during basketball season.

Mother’s Day Story: I assisted with an adoption at the hospital where I worked for almost 0 years. I met the adoptive parents and the new mom at different times that morning as I would be handling important legal papers. Arrangements were set. The young college-student mother was given time to hold her baby one last time before handing it over the adoptive parents. No family supported her. I was the only one with her. When she was ready, she handed her newborn to the adoptive parents were older and were never able to have a child of their own. That was the most sad and yet most joyful moment to witness in my whole life. Unselfish love. LRM
