more importantly, people do not have to “look” like your definition of poc to be poc. people do not ever have to prove themselves to you with regard to their race. asking poc who may, sometimes or all the time, be “white passing” to constantly justify themselves to you, especially if you are white, is only exhausting and hurtful to them. yes, “white passing” poc might gain privilege in instances where people are seeing them as strangers. but they also come up against all sorts of issues with alienation and feelings of listlessness and lack of identity. those feelings come from constantly being forced to somehow prove they’re a part of their culture.
regardless of whether or not jeff davis writes theo as native american within the show, theo is a character of color. his actor being a person of color automatically makes him a character of color, in the same way scott was a character of color long before jeff confirmed this within canon. the problem lies within jeff’s refusal to code any mentions of theo’s ethnicity, which, at the moment, may have something to do with the fact that we know very little about theo’s past. if he fails to do so when theo’s past is revealed, the problem is not theo not being poc, it’s jeff not acknowledging him. theo is poc. theo will always be poc. theo is not white. he will never be white. if they code him as white in the writer’s room, he will still not be white.
IT WILL BE EXTREMELY PROBLEMATIC OF JEFF NEVER TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT HE ISN’T WHITE. but it will not make him white. it will make jeff davis wrong.
