Here are some photos from my performance a week ago at Madonna University in Livonia, MI! Thanks to Kathleen Thompson for taking these and to everyone who was so kind at the university, especially Professor Fatima Ayoub-Salemassi, who helped to organize this concert. You guys were truly a great audience and we hope to come back to the Detroit/Dearborn area soon!Â
It has been a crazy 24 hours, but guitar and I are Detroit bound! Ready to rock Madonna U tonight. đ¸âď¸ (at LaGuardia Airport)
Excited to be performing at Madonna University in Michigan with Natalia Perlaza and participating in a discussion on my music/activism, Islam, Muslim-American identity, and much more. This is a free event and open to the general public - all you need to do is register on Eventbrite!Â

#latergram from the rehearsal out of the Twilight Zone. Loose wires everywhere, mold (I think), and death metal blasting from the room next door. #LA peeps better come to @thehotelcafe tonight at 7pm! My allergies may or may not still be reeling from the stuff on the walls at this rehearsal space. lets make this worthwhile. đ (at Los Angeles, California)

I don't want to have to compromise my morals in order to make a living
i dont want my words to be taken out of contextÂ
i dont want to be infantilized because i refuse to be sexualized Â
i dont want to be molested at shows or on the street by people who perceive me as an object that exists for their personal satisfactionÂ
i dont want to live in a world where im gonna have to start employing body guards because this kind of behavior is so commonplace and accepted and Iâm pissed that when I express concern over my own safety itâs often ignored until people see firsthand what happens and then they apologize for not taking me seriously after the factâŚÂ
Iâm tired of men who arenât professional or even accomplished musicians continually offering to âhelp me outâ (without being asked), as if i did this by accident and iâm gonna flounder without them. or as if the fact that Iâm a woman makes me incapable of using technology. I have never seen this kind of thing happen to any of my male peersÂ
Iâm tired of the weird insistence that i need a band or i need to work with outside producers (and Iâm eternally grateful to the people who donât do this)
im tired of being considered vapid for liking pop music or caring about fashion as if these things inherently lack substance or as if the things i enjoy somehow make me a lesser personÂ
im tired of being congratulated for being thin because i can more easily fit into sample sizes from the runwayÂ
im tired of people i love betraying me so they can get credit or money
Iâm sad that itâs uncool or offensive to talk about environmental or human rights issues
Iâm tired of creeps on message boards discussing whether or not theyâd âfuckâ me
Iâm tired of people harassing my dancers and treating them like they arenât human beings
Iâm sad that my desire to be treated as an equal and as a human being is interpreted as hatred of men, rather than a request to be included and respected (I have four brothers and many male best friends and a dad and i promise i do not hate men at all, nor do i believe that all men are sexist or that all men behave in the ways described above)Â
im tired of being referred to as âcute,â as a âwaifâ etc., even when the author, fan, friend, family member etc. is being positiveÂ
(fyi)
waif |wÄf|
noun
1 a homeless and helpless person, esp. a neglected or abandoned child: she is foster-mother to various waifs and strays .
⢠an abandoned pet animal.
cute |kyoÍot|
adjective
1Â attractive in a pretty or endearing way:Â a cute kitten.
â˘Â informal sexually attractive.
Iâm tired of people assuming that just because something happens regularly itâs ok
ââââââââââââ
i have so much love for everyone who has been cool and amazing. I have the best job in the world but Iâm done with being passive about any kind of status quo that allows anyone to suffer or to be disrespected
Grimes world tour is officially over, the visions album cycle is officially over, and Iâm now taking the time to overhaul everything and make it betterÂ
much love to every fan - stuff can be lame sometimes but its really cool to have this support <3Â
I'm so late with this but it's amazing and I so relate.
5 Kinds of Racists
I've come to the conclusion that there are several different kinds of racists. Feel free to add your own observations to this list.
1) The racist who makes offensive jokes around friends/family, assuming that words are harmless. Let's call this the benevolent racist (similar to the benevolent sexist - they think they have good intentions, so that couldn't possibly make them racist/sexist). After all, they're just kidding right? Stop being so PC.
2) The racist who is actually dumb enough to say racist things in public around people who might not be sympathetic to their hatred.
3) The racist who is compelled to verbally harass people from the group they hate so much.
4) The racist whose is actually compelled to do physical harm (eg Charleston, Chapell Hill, etc)
5) The racist who agrees any of the above racists but will never own up to it in public.
Moral of the story here - there are varying degrees of racism, sexism, any ism. These phenomena do not exist only in extremes (saying the N word or another racial pejorative, killing someone) - they exist on a spectrum. We have all met at least 1 or more of these people. The sad part is, a #1 can one day become a #2 or a #3, and so on. When will we stop this sickness from progressing?
Remember that silence = consent. Peace and love everyone.
