"In other news, 21-year old Camila Balvanera has recently passed away. It was said that she took her own life by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge last Friday night. Balvanera, famous for her Truth Tea column, was said to have been otherwise happy just hours before she met her untimely death. No one knows the exact reasons on why she took her own life; it is quite unfortunate to see someone so young pass away like this."
Henry was busy making pies when Killian came in with another case to solve. The morning hadn't began as lovely as he'd hoped (it never did), and he secretly yearned for Killian to just solve this murder on his own. Sure, his unique ability to bring the dead back to life helped a lot more than he knew; but just this once, all Henry wanted to do for the day was make pies.
"Henry, I really need your help with this case--"
"You need help with all your bloody cases. Today, just for today, I would like to be left alone to work in my pie-shop." Henry gave him a cold, hard look. "Just for today."
And then Killian gave him that pitiful look. "Mate...I know you miss him, I know it can be hard. But...you've moved on. You've your own pie-shop that would make him proud, a-and you're helping me catch murderers and criminals! I'm sure your father would want you out solving crimes rather than holed up in 'ere, moping around and making sad pies."
Leaning against the counter, Henry let out a long, tremulous sigh in an attempt to remove the lump that formed in his throat. On this day, almost twenty years ago, Henry's father had passed away -- and he knew it had been all his fault. It was also his entire fault that Camila's mom passed away that day, too.
Camila. . .she sometimes came to mind every once in a while when he was making her favorite flavor of pie: cherry. Always served with homemade whipped cream, and an extra cherry on top.
Putting a finished cherry pie in the fridge, Henry reluctantly went to the front of his shop and sat in the booth across from Killian. "Alright, what's the case?"
And suddenly, it felt as if the whole world and all of time had stopped.
"Henry...you okay, lad? This isn't any different from the other cases we've done. You've seen worse, actually," Killian told him. "Anyway, the funeral's in a few hours, so we better get going."
Henry wasn't entirely sure if he could handle witnessing the funeral of his childhood sweetheart. Sure, they only had one kiss before Camila was shipped off to America to live with some relatives, but he still considered her his first love. Life after that was completely bland; and no relationship could match what young Henry had with Camila Balvanera.
His palms were sweaty as they drove up to the funeral home. Almost immediately, Killian was making his way inside. Henry almost had to be dragged into the vicinity if it weren't for Killian's menacing glare. "Oh, I hate the smell of funeral homes..." he mumbled anxiously to himself.
Upon entering a room, Henry stopped in his tracks. The casket was a baby pink, and open for them to see a very peaceful Camila laying within it. Her hand were laid softly across her stomach. Upon closer inspection, he noticed she still wore the charm bracelet he bought for her fifth birthday; it was silver inlay with a design that formed itself into a Siamese Cat.
She still kept it after all these years...
"Killian, i-is it alright if I do this one alone?" Henry asked, unable to remove his gaze from her still body.
"Sure, mate. Don't take too long -- and make sure you find out who the murderer was, alright?"
Once he was gone, he took a few tentative steps towards the half-open coffin, feeling the tears well up in his eyes at the thought that he would only get one minute to be able to speak to her before she would return to the unknown world of the dead. He lifted up his wrist, sucking in a breath as his index finger hovered over her, wondering where it was that he would give her that touch of life.
Henry quickly touched her lips, light as ever (she looked so fragile, breakable), and those familiar blue eyes burst wide open. "...H-Hello, Camila.."
