In addition to making chainmail pieces for nice people I also work at the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Here are some of my favorite chain jewelry from our Etruscan collection (pre-Roman, 800 B.C.E.-264 C.E.). I always mention the Etruscans in my chainmail classes, because they were weaving chain jewelry as far back as 700 B.C.E. (and treating women far better than most cultures in the ancient world), but we still always get stuck associating chainmail with knights, battles, and more specifically, men.
