Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating
@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally
Source (non Aboriginal)
And a quote I picked out from a longer interview with an Aboriginal local elder about the area where he touched on the history
Source (the rest of the interview is really interesting and all transcribed, have a look if you're curious)
This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.
as a gilgar gunditj woman, i was not expecting to see my culture on my dash.
thank you for spreading our words and treating our culture with respect.
The Djaru/Jaru people of Western Australia have a creation story about Wolfe Creek Crater, describing a star that fell from the heavens and caused a massive explosion and a brilliant flash of light, accompanied by a massive dust cloud. The story says that people feared and avoided the area for a long time after the impact.
Which seems fairly plausible as something that originated from eyewitness accounts passed down from people who actually experienced the meteorite impact, right?
But here's the thing...
Scientists think the meteorite hit just under 120 000 years ago.
Aboriginal people supposedly arrived in Australia around 60 000 years ago.
But maybe one of those figures is wrong...

[Medicine and the law of gender binarism portray the process of transsexuality as a narrow and dangerous path, a definitive, irreversible mutation, that can be achieved only in extreme conditions, such that few people, as few as possible, would be able to follow that path. I, however, would say that the path is easier and more pleasant than most of the experiences and experiments that the dominant discourse suggests are desirable and obligatory and which have been legitimized by medical and judicial institutions. In itself, gender transition is easier to accomplish than going to school every day at the same time throughout the long years of childhood and adolescence, easier than a faithful monogamous marriage, easier than pregnancy and childbirth, easier than starting a family, easier than finding a rewarding full-time job, easier than being happy in a consumer society, easier than growing old and being shut away in a retirement home. I would go so far as to say that, contrary to what is routinely claimed, the mutation process that accompanies gender transitioning is one of the most beautiful and joyous things that I have ever done in my life. All the things that are terrible and terrifying about transsexuality and gender transitioning are not found in the process of transition itself, but in the way in which the boundaries between the sexes punish and threaten to kill anyone who dares cross them. It is not gender transitioning that is horrifying and dangerous, but the regime of sexual difference.]
I was innocently buying a soda and a Kit Kat bar from a snack shop recently when the cashier said, "Oh, a Kit Kat! That's what I named my cat!" and then launched into An Monologue.
Nobody was behind me in line, which seemed to be a good reason for her to treat me to a five minute retelling of the identification, rescue, and argument over initial custody of Kit Kat, who was so small they thought when they first heard him crying for help that he was a bird and not a kitten in a tree, and is now fifteen pounds of "pure, sculpted lardass".
And I didn't mind, precisely, I wasn't bored or anything, but around the time she was bringing me up to speed on Kit Kat's current status it occurred to me that this woman is a cashier in a store that primarily sells candy bars and beverages. People must buy Kit Kat bars from her multiple times a day. Does she do this every time there's nobody in line behind the purchaser? Did I just have that I Own Several Cats And Will Enjoy Your Cat Stories look about me? Was it the first time it occurred to her that she sold the brand of candy bar she named her cat after? Was she new to the job of selling Kit Kat bars?
The idea that every time she sees a Kit Kat bar she is gripped by the urge, Manchurian Candidate style, to retell the story of Kit Kat the Cat, elevates her from a friendly cashier to a deep enigma. Truly there is no knowing the mind of another.
IT GETS FUNNIER
I was in the same snack shop, which I'm in, like, once a month, recently. I only recognized her because I spent five minutes listening to this monologue in sincere wonder. But I did recognize her, so as I was buying a soda and a Milky Way bar (this time) I said, without thinking about how this would come across, "Hey, how's Kit Kat?"
She looked genuinely horrified and said, "What...how?"
"Oh fuck!" I blurted. "Sorry! You told me about him last time!"
This is still quite cryptic as responses go but she gave me a frankly frantic look of sudden recognition and said, "He's fine! You bought a Kit Kat! I was unmedicated!"
I did not inform her she is small town famous on Tumblr and instead just said, "Glad you're both doing well!" and we parted as confused and mortified friends.
Gosh she's fun. I hope she's there next time. I want to reenact the Spiderman Pointing meme with her.

Can you draw postmaster Mia?
i did promise and not deliver a few weeks back so here ya go now:
I haven't really drawn the swan type longwing since i find the wings difficult but these are the heaviest longwings, they easily take off from water and land frequently, unlike the frigate style longwings.
Mia is a kind of celebrity because his visor is a twinned one with a recognisable character and it gives him a lot of leeway to kind of go wherever he wants, so he's been around many council sessions at the hall of faces and the Spire. he's just one of those guys who seems to show up everywhere and know everything that goes on, and he always has a story to tell (he's kind of a gossip)
I took the opportunity to draw what the inside of the visor looks like, it is essentially invisible to the wearer, projecting seamless views of the green Sirenian sky on its inner surface. It has a few augmented reality features, though; it always shows the moons at their current position and fullness even if they would be hard to see or obscured otherwise. There's also a chat window in there.
Augmentations to the visors are forbidden but since the fit is different on everyone, you have to bring your own straps and padding and so on to make it fit right. Mia uses a lot of woven reeds since it's Siren's most abundant material and not likely to scratch or damage the inside of the visor.

lowkey i want more "problematic" aromantic and/or asexual representation. i want aro/aces who are unhappily married or in romantic relationships that they abandon for entirely selfish and not necessarily sympathetic reasons. i want aro/aces who are bitterly jealous of their friends' romantic partners for making them happy in ways they never could. i want aro/aces who are corrupted by power because they can't find satisfaction in other people. and i want romantic relationships that are ruined by friendships or even the allure of isolation. i want love to lose.
