"Maybe for your birthday, if you don't want anything else."
“If it means I get to spend time with you then I’ll happily agree.”
"No. And I've never made one, either."
“Yet.”
"Not only enjoying but *delivering*."
“I don’t think he’d be caught dead saying any of it.”
"This is a lesson in patience, honey."
"You know how I told you a good sense of humor is one of the best skills you can have? ...It's not this."
"Aren't you supposed to enjoy dad jokes now?" Is she teasing him? Of course.
@aamusedly
"You look like you're having fun, Dad."
aamusedly:
Not exactly the reaction he’d been hoping for, but his plan for some last-minute father-daughter time was barely cobbled together at best. But Devil was a good improviser.
So he gave a wide, toothy smile. “I can take work with me! I’ve been working from home a lot anyway… might as well take it across the pond.”
“We could explore together,” he reached out to rub her shoulders playfully, “go to museums, and go shopping…”
Eleria couldn't help the giggle at his excitement. Devil wore a mask much of the time among others but here at home it wasn't as ridgedly upheld. She knew he had been restless without her mother around. The trip would probably be good for him.
"Of course we will, Dad." She smiled again, her surprise fading into her usual cheer, "That's the whole point of the trip." A pause. "The museums, not the shopping." Although teenagers on what was likely a once in a lifetime trip would demand some time to get souvenirs.
"I think we're also going to several of the ancient sites. Like the Sistine Chapel and Versailles."
aamusedly:
It was a reward of fatherhood to have moments like these; she certainly made it easy to give her what she wanted when she reacted like that. Even he was grinning over her shoulder as she hugged him.
“I know you will.”
“Because I’m going too. I’ll be the chaperone.”
Eleria pulled back at that to look him in the face with wide eyes. Some part of her wasn’t surprised at the news however. Devil wasn’t one to let what was most valuable to him out of sight for long. Had the teenager any designs on breaking any rules, they’d best be forgotten now.
Nothing escaped her father’s notice. At least not for very long. Not that she was one to disobey overtly anyway. If this was the price she had to pay to go on this trip, it was one that she would gladly pay.
Still one thing was on her mind as she stared up at him. “Can you leave your work that long?”
aamusedly:
A tempered response, manicured. She was good– better than him in a lot of ways. A younger version of himself might’ve blown up at the patronizing, but then again he didn’t have much perspective on a healthy paternal relationship.
Devil made peace with it, took a bite of the apple she’d left for him, and rolled his eyes. “Sure thing, Sweetie.”
“You can go. I checked things over.”
Eleria glanced up sharply at the granted permission. “Really?” Honestly she wasn't confident he'd actually allow her out of his reach at all. Not that she'd ever be entirely out of his reach. He had far too much power for that.
Her expression lit up with one of her dimpled smiles, her amber eyes bright with it. With a bound she got up from her chair and threw her arms around him. "Thank you so much!" She pressed a kiss against his cheek, enthusiastic enough to show her appreciation through affection. "I promise I'll do everything to stay safe."
aamusedly:
Devil answered with a nod and a hum and a sizeable bite of his sandwich with a loud crunch. It wasn’t something he’d have indulged in before his jaunt into domesticity, but here he was singing the praises of Kraft singles. “Good, but… there’s another lesson to learn here, you know.”
It was a familiar cadence to his voice that said he was ready to dispense some paternal wisdom; gentle despite the severity on his scarred face. “It’s one thing to be good at getting people to do what you want, but if you aren’t careful, if you start seeing the people around you as means to an end– and I’m not saying you are. But…”
“…I’m real good at getting people to do what I want them to, but I also had a lot of people who hate me– and for a good reason. Even if I had the best of intentions, I could still hurt a lot of people with how I treated them. …You can end up with nobody left to talk to.”
Another crunch of his sandwich. “Anyway, just something to think about. I appreciate you wanting to learn from your father, but just remember where I fall short too.”
Eleria remained watching him quietly as he spoke, warning her against the dangers of manipulating others. She knew the results of her father's business, potentially more than he might have expected. Or not. Devil was remarkably observant.
She could have argued that what he had made people do and what he did to them was caused that hate but that would lead to nothing but another fight. And Eleria knew that would give her no advantage in convincing him to let her go.
Finally she dropped her gaze to the half finished sandwich in her hand in submission, her long lashes obscuring her amber eyes. "Okay, Dad." She murmured obediently. "I'll make sure that I keep that in mind. I'd like to keep the friends I have." Not that any really knew what or who she was yet. They may never know. She finally raised her gaze, smiling again. The next statement was definitely a mild tease. “Or any future boyfriend.”
Given her parents profession as well as species Eleria likely has some sort of weapon on her that won't be picked up on if she goes through a metal detector.
aamusedly:
It didn’t take long for him to get downstairs, mostly long enough to finish up his very spiked coffee and get his temper back in check. But the Devil loped down to the kitchen not long after, hands in the pockets of his sweatpants and his expression mild. His lazy days were getting more and more frequent.
He was mostly silent as he cooked, save for humming along to the music he’d put on in the meantime– he was thinking.
Thankfully it was his sandwich that was burning on the stove as he walked off to take a call– not Jack, by the sound of how polite and cordial his tone was. Devil came back to rescue the scalded cheese and set it on a plate with a satisfying crunch of a knife to cut it in half.
He was standing over the counter in favor of sitting down for his lunch. He’d had enough sitting today. Amber eyes watched her carefully. “You’re getting more and more like me, sometimes. The way you try to get things you want. Do you see it, or is it just me?”
Eleria had sliced an apple to share between them, leaving half on the cutting board as she took her plate to the table. Her eyes were on the textbook next to her as she ate, going over what appeared to be a math assignment. Unfortunately he was just beyond earshot for her to understand the phone call. Likely not work related judging by the tone but who knew with Devil.
However her eyes turned up to meet his as he spoke up, addressing her. She smiled, her dimples creasing her cheeks. "You've always encouraged me to chase what I want in life, Dad. I have a very good teacher." Probably not the most morally correct one but she had seen enough of his successes to realize that he was effective.
