Hyaenodon gigas (or sp) and Amphicyon ingens
These are my versions of these animals, created for a world-building project. Both were drawn from images of skeletons.
Hyaenodon are often depicted too closely to hyenas in my mind, since they had nothing in common with hyenas, except being named for the extant animal’s teeth, so I tried to give it a more unique appearance. I did look to striped hyenas and aardwolves (as well as African civets) for the “mane” on the back, but most of the fur, tail and body, I took from lesser carnivorans, like civets.
I made them striped, to camouflage in forests, where they hunt alone. Again, this is for my world-building project, rather than any advanced reading into palaeontology, but I did read papers on both of these species before drawing them.
The Amphicyon I find is often depicted too closely to bears. They had the long tail and flexing body of a big cat, and while more heavily built than the cats, had a completely different body shape and method of locomotion from bears, so it shouldn’t look like just a long-tailed bear.
I obviously drew from bears, wolves, and big cats like tigers, lions and Amur and snow leopards here, but the biggest inspiration was “big wolverine”. There is disagreement on whether Amphicyon was fully plantigrade like bears, so I made it half-plantigrade, looking to wolverines.
While the Hyaenodon is fearful, baring its teeth in a defensive threat, the Amphicyon is bold, running forward with its hackles and tail tip raised to intimidate.
Putting the two animals next to each other, to scale (Amphicyon 1.2 meters tall and Hyaenodon 1 meter), really shows just how huge those jaws of the Hyaenodon were, though I also think the head of the Amphicyon may be undersized (I used this skeleton to draw the outline).

Tuesday 7/12/21 - Where are all the medium sized Theropods?

Ecosystems these days are made up of animals and plants of varying sizes and niches. Niche partitioning is a term used to describe how different roles in an ecosystem are taken up by different species. Carnivores for example, can be suited to a variety of roles, even within the same biological family.
Think of North American canines for example. Red Foxes are a smaller predator, hunting rodents, small birds etc. Then there's Coyotes who hunt those smaller prey too, but also hunt larger animals like beavers, and porcupines, and even pack hunt for animals like deer. Then there's Wolves, which may opportunistically scavenge, but are specialised in larger prey as a pack, like bison. Just like prey, predators can inhabit a small size, medium size, or large size niche. But this divide was long-thought to be seemingly absent in dinosaurs.

Ok so when you think of the size of a meat-eating dinosaur, you either think of a large apex predator like Tyrannosaurus or a smaller agile hunter like a Velociraptor. Late Mesozoic Theropods are consistently either huge, or man sized, and palaeontologists were puzzled as to why there were so few species in the middle. There were small, medium, and large prey animals in the age of reptiles, so why was there no medium sized theropods to fill in that niche?
Recently, there has been a revision on how we understand the growth and diet of predatory dinosaurs that may help to understand a solution to this question. Modern pack hunting animals share their kills with their family groups. An African Wild Dog puppy is not large or powerful enough to kill an Antelope, but a large portion of their diet will be Antelope because their parents will share the kill.

Studies of coprolites (fossil poo) and fossilised stomach remains in young dinosaurs have revealed it may have worked out differently. Young Deinonychus have been found to have different nutrients in their diets to adults, and palaeontolgists think this is because they hunted different animals (Frederick et al 2020). Adult Deinonychus had the power and skill to kill dinosaurs larger than themselves, but juveniles could not, so would've pursued smaller reptiles, mammals, or even invertebrates. Adults didn't share their kills with their young, so they had to find their own food.
This ontogenetic (relating to aging and development) variation in niches has also been theorised in larger theropods, to the point where some smaller to medium-sized dinosaur species have been identified as potential juveniles of larger species. Nanotyrannus was a species of smaller Tyrannosaur that has a very different body shape compared to the largest of the group. It had been described as about as tall as an adult human, with long slender legs, and had an extensive covering of feathers. But new studies have discussed the possibilities of Nanotyrannus being the juvenile form of Tyrannosaurus rex itself.

If this was the case, as many palaeontologists are on board with, it means that young Tyrannosauruses were specialised for a very different lifestyle than their adult counterparts. The juveniles were pursuit predators, running after smaller prey items, whereas the adults would take on larger dinosaurs, and did not have nearly enough leg strength to run for longer distances.

Scipionyx, the first dinosaur species discovered from Italy, has also theorised to be the juvenile of a larger species. It was initially classified as part of the group Compsagnathidae, but palaeontologists have begun to question whether the group itself is natural, or if scientists have just grouped together unrelated species of the same body shape and size. Given the shape and plasticity of its bones, the known specimen of Scipionyx is thought to be a hatchling, but a hatchling of what? Italian Paleaontologist Andre Cau theorised (Cau 2021 (its in Italian)) that Scipionyx was a juvenile Carcharadontosaurid, and further, that most of the Compsagnathid group consists of juveniles of large bodied theropods. The "Compsagnathid" body shape could in fact just be the body shape of juvenile Tetanurans (the clade including most theropods).

This type of ontogenetic niche partitioning exists today in some reptile groups, particularly in Komodo Dragons, where the juveniles are aboreal insectivores, and the adults hunt mammals many times larger than themselves.

Dinosaurs were not mammals, and in fact are unlike many other groups alive today, and understanding their biology and behaviour requires looking into many different vertebrate groups. So, to answer the question posed by this post's title? Where are all the medium sized theropods? Its likely they're the bigger ones going through a phase.

The likes of Jack Horner may want everything to be “the baby dinosaurs”, because of course juveniles died and fossilized as well, but these palaeontologists seem unwilling to imagine a scenario like the modern world, where lions, tigers, leopards and cheetahs live side by side (India).
Or like the African plains, where dozens of bovids (antelopes and gazelles) live together, and two rhino species live in the same area.
And certainly these two (grey wolf and red fox) must be the adult and juvenile stage of the same animal:

Honestly the Ice Age megafauna of the African continent deserves as much attention and love as the Pleistocene animals of Australia, Eurasia and North and South America
There are a lot of amazing creatures that are overlooked, including late surviving sivatheres and chalicotheres, hairless mammoths, wild cattle with extreme horn lengths, giant civets, giant warthogs, giant baboons and the giant lemurs of Madagascar
That the focus is so much on especially North America, Europe and Australia, South America most of the time being only considered in the context of the faunal exchange with North America, has to be due to an eurocentric view on palaeontology
...or maybe just due to the fact that the megafauna of those continents today isn’t that interesting or even existent anymore, while Africa’s fauna is extremely spectacular even today, which makes the ice age megafauna of the other continents more interesting by contrast.
Seriously, some people’s effort they put into finding inventing “racism” and “white supremacy” wherever they go...

I’d like to add Eucladoceros dicranios
Eucladoceros was a large deer, reaching 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) in body length and standing about 1.8 metres (5.9 ft) tall at the shoulder, only slightly smaller than a modern moose. It had a spectacular set of antlers which split into twelve tines per pedicle, and were up to 1.7 metres (5.6 ft) wide.[2]
The most distinctive feature of Eucladoceros was its comb-like antlers, especially in E. ctenoides. E. dicranios is the most evolved species of the genus, with a dichotomous branching of each antler tine. Eucladoceros was the first deer genus to have highly evolved antlers; however its cranial shape and dental morphology remained primitive, as in Rusa unicolor.
Even more interesting is that number 5 is not a Cervid at all, but a relative of the giraffe, okapi and pronghorn (Giraffoidea). And since we only have the skulls of these strange creatures, we can’t know exactly what their horns looked like.

I’ve developed a lot in both digital and traditional sculpting over the past couple of years, and am not going to update my old tumblr page on it, but focus more on Instagram and am going to make a business out of it, mainly traditional (clay) until I have good 3D-printing or other uses of the digital sculpts.
But meanwhile, I’m doing digital sculpting for practice. It’s less frustrating than clay, because I can rotate it any way I want (without worrying about smudging stuff I’ve already done), symmetry (until I turn it off), and I can leave a file for months without touching it, while the clay would be near-ruined at that point.

Paleo Talk: Arsinoitherium
So, in the past, I have briefly mentioned about a strange animal from the early Tertiary of Egypt named Arsinoitherium. Now, we get to embrace the true oddity of this bizarre Oligocene animal.
To start it off, where Arsinoitherium belongs in the family tree of mammals is a mystery really.Due to the odd nature of the animal, it has been given it’s own family Embrithopoda, which as of late, a few more members have been found. Their scrappy nature and lack of scientific description however, makes Arsinoitherium the main source of the family with the fairly complete look we have of it. While it looks like a Rhinoceros, the similarities are just a part of convergent evolution. It’s lifestyle has been acquitted to being similar to that of a hippo, after habitat analysis and tooth molecular wear examinations. And yet, the closest descendant that has been hyraxes, sirenians, Desmostylians, and elephants.
Some of the stranger features shown in the specimens we have are fairly evident. One is the set of large, divided horns that sit on it’s face made of solid bone. These make the weapons more like that of a Triceratops’ horn than that of a Rhino, which is made of keratin. It isn’t exactly known why they had such large defense features, but with the several forms of Creodont that shared it’s environment, I wouldn’t say that I’m too terribly surprised. The next is the amount of teeth that Arsinoitherium has, which is around forty four. This is the maximum for most placental mammals, making Arsinoitherium a more primitive creature than a modern day rhino or elephant, which is a bit odd for it’s later date in history. Much is left to be discovered and studied about this amazing fossil species, and I cannot wait to here what’s next.
