Heart and Mined: The title of this piece represents the Heart of the Ocean, a fictional necklace that carries a large sapphire pendant. Although this precious stone is not exactly mined from the ocean, it represents how precious marine life is and how it is mindlessly and constantly taken out as if it were mined from a quarry. La Piéce Lazuli: The title is a play on the words La Piéce, a French term for 'the component', in which oceans play in all walks of life; and Lapis Lazuli, a semi-precious stone once used to produce blue dye in classical paintings. Due to the cost of obtaining lapis lazuli, blue was a colour that contributed to the production of expensive masterpieces. This reflects the depletion of the ocean's resources through overfishing, overmining and pollution, the cost of which to satisfy human greed.
