goro knows that look akira is giving him. years growing up inseparable with this guy gives goro all the cues on him. coupled with his last statement—pretty cool of me, huh?—goro already knows: akira’s waiting for a compliment.

still, he indulges his childhood friend for a moment, slinging his bag to his shoulder so he can free his hand and tap his fingers against his chin with a contemplative hum, but the twinkle in his eyes promise that he isn’t really thinking about this at all—the look of the perpetually infuriating.

❝ you’re passable, ❞ goro finally answers after a beat too long, complete with a wink, and he doesn’t give akira a chance for a rebuttal; he enters the cafe immediately. alright, perhaps he’s not really going to indulge akira that easily. god knows where he learnt to lock picks, anyway—probably from wikihow at three am.

the bell rings when he enters, and the smell of coffee is strong, even on off days like this, though he supposes that shouldn’t be surprising; at this rate, the smell should already stick to the walls and furniture. a deep inhale, just to indulge himself, then he puts akira’s bag on the counter and turns to him. ❝ is sakura-san really okay with us keeping the cafe to ourselves for the whole day? that’s awfully kind of him. ❞ a pause. ❝ let’s not break anything, hm? ❞

Akira gives his friend an expectant smile, foolishly hoping that for once, just once, Goro would satisfy his ego. But of course not- his smile drops into a pout as the words “you’re passable” leave Goro’s lips.

“Ah, how you wound me. It wouldn’t kill you to play along at least a little.” He followed in behind Goro and went behind the counter to put on the green apron that Sojiro had him wear while working here.

“ Yea it’s fine, he says it’s good practice. Now then-” Akira paused to jokingly fumble with a cup, as if to drop it on the floor and shatter it, before placing it down on the counter in front of Goro. “What can I get for you?”

Akira was being given a second chance to impress Goro and elicit a genuine compliment from him. He had been working hard to learn how to make a good cup of coffee under Sojiro’s tutelage, and had even gone out of his way to read up about it online and in books too. Sojiro did say that ladies love a guy who knows his coffee, so the Shujin student assumed that it should work just fine in this case too.

they’ve only been outside for less than ten minutes, but goro is already worrying that someone might pass by and think he and akira are trying to break into leblanc.

he’s definitely overthinking this; akira works in this cafe—where does he not work these days, anyway?—which means he has every right to be in this cafe, but with goro carrying two bags ( that contain books and pens and school things, by the way ) and akira bent over in front of the door with a closed sign and doing…something…( picking the door’s lock ) goro is pretty sure they both look really suspicious and definitely stupid for doing something that looks like a break-in in broad daylight.

goro blinks once, and he sighs as he looks over at his friend who’s still bent over in front of the door.

❝ akira, i don’t really think this is a good idea. ❞

Every once in a while, Akira would get this feeling that he was forgetting something. Normally it turned out to be but a minor inconvenience, so he tended to brush it off as it probably being nothing. But during moments like right now, where he went to reach for the key to Leblanc and was met empty handed, he would silently curse himself for not taking the extra time to double check his belongings.

But this time things turned out for the better, because now he had a reason to show off the lock picking skills he learned while surfing wikihow at 3am. Maybe he could finally prove how cool he was to Goro- But on the other hand, Goro knew that he could ride a unicycle. Who would ever think Akira was cool after obtaining that kind of knowledge...

Akira must’ve gotten lost in thought, because Goro was starting to get a bit antsy, as he was taking longer to open the door than he had intended.

“ Don’t worry, it’s not like anyone ever comes here. Besides, look I’m done- open sesame! Pretty cool of me, huh? “

As Akira held the door open for his friend, he was practically fishing for compliments at this point.
