SHE DITHERS FOR ANOTHER MOMENT , gaze casting about them before , finally , does she settle herself behind him ; arms wind around his waist with chin atop his shoulder . she REALLY didn’t want to get caught in the rain , && it sure beat walking home on her own . ‘ thank you , sam . ‘ tucking herself just that little bit closer with arms that much tighter about his waist she tries to talk herself out of the THOUGHTS that he was simply doing this because he felt sorry for her , not because he actually thought her worth the time . ‘ i appreciate it … ‘
the grin on his face grew as he felt her saddle up behind him. it was nice, the closeness, something he could only hope for on any given day. but, she’d trusted him enough not to get them both killed on the way to her house, so who was he to disappoint? “ no worries ,” he hums thoughtlessly, boston accent heavy in his voice as he revved the engine and took off down the street. “ don’t mention it , yeah ? it’s my pleasure . ”

RETURNING TO ANY FORM OF NORMALITY after that had happened was a task in itself , something she was ill prepared for ; still , she was TRYING , && that was the main thing . gaze levels upon sam for a moment , weighing up the options – walk home on her own , or accept his offer . a tilt of her head , inwards roll of her lips && she’s maybe relenting on the hold upon the books stacked within her hands – a step closer , nearing the curb of the street && she’s balancing on the edge of it . ‘ it wouldn’t be out of your way ? ‘ she knows it isn’t , which is why he’s OFFERING , && if she was going to be honest with herself , it was nice to be around someone who did not treat her like glass , as though she were about to shatter at any moment . ‘ i don’t want to be a PAIN . ‘
he takes the books as she relinquishes her grasp on them, holding them with one arm against his side as the other takes her hand and helps her take the proper step down off of the sidewalk and onto the asphalt. “ you know better than that , don’t you ? ” head tilted, releasing her hand to slip onto his bike and kick up the kickstand. “ you’re never a pain . besides , it looks like it’s gonna rain soon . i’d never forgive myself . ” revving the bike beneath him up, books quickly shoved into his backpack and hung from his side. “ hop on . ”
lauricstrode.
SHE’S THANKFUL FOR HIM , SHE REALLY is . for the softness && for the affection , for the safety && the peace he brings ; after that night , she had given up all hope on finding something to call her own , finding somebody who saw her as more than ‘ that girl michael myers tried to murder ‘ . a label that followed her throughout the years , unable to be shed – she would bear the scars forever . his fingers lace with hers && she’s stepping back into him , with lips touching so briefly to his jawline , lingering there as she nods her agreement to proposed activities . ‘ you’re too good to me , sam . ‘
“ nah , you deserve it . what do you want for breakfast ? i make some killer blueberry pancakes . ” his thumb runs along her knuckles, feeling the dips between them, slow and tender. a gentle squeeze, being sure to keep her close to his side -- he knew the stigma her name and face held, but he didn’t want her or anyone else to focus on that. right now, she was with him, and he wanted her to focus on him. not tonight, not other people, not michael. just them. “ oh , here’s an idea -- why don’t we get the stuff to make pizza and just do it ourselves ? ”
lauricstrode.
NOW , THERE IS A SMILE ON HER FACE , curving the corners of bare lips as she offers the smallest of shakes of her head ; amusement settles , but she’s gripping books TIGHTER to her chest && shifting gaze towards the mother && child walking on the opposite side of the road . ‘ i , uh … ‘ breaks off , facing him once more before , quickly , does she shift attentions to the bike at his side . she W A N T S to live a little , but still does she hold back . ‘ i was meant to be home thirty minutes ago , i should – i should go . ‘ @patronedloss
he can tell she’s hesitant, read it across her face like a book; but it doesn’t deter him one bit. that shitty little grin doesn’t leave his face, however, moving in closer and offering to take her books. “ let me at least give you a ride home , yeah ? ” not that he really cared; sam was an orphan on his own, and the only reason he stayed around was due to nathan being stuck in an orphanage nearby. he didn’t attend school, but he’d walked laurie home more than enough times for them to have formed some sort of bond. and yeah, maybe he wanted more than that, but he wouldn’t push more than a few teases. “ wouldn’t want your parents worrying . ”
lauricstrode.
SHE KNEW WITHOUT A THOUGHT how many years it had been , how long she had been surviving – barely , it all felt so fragile . frame leans into his own , an exhale stirring blonde locks as she all but PRESSES herself into him in a bid to find comfort , to forget , if only for a moment , the nightmares that still woke her screaming , the sheer FEAR that came from shadows in the halls – she was tainted by that loss , by that fear && it’s accompanying guilt ; all those years , && it would haunt her to the grave . ‘ ‘slong as we can get stuffed crust . ‘ voice is muffled against his shoulder , but in those few short words are the beginnings of a smile , slight curve of bare lips .
a kiss is pressed to her hair, then her temple, able to feel just how anxious she was about the coming night. hand resting on her back gave a few reassuring rubs. “ how about this , ” he started, keeping an arm around her as he began walking, “ we’ll get some red wine , watch a movie , get fat on stuffed crust pizza and dessert . probably pass out on the couch . i’ll make you breakfast in the morning . ” a smile as he glances down at her, the hand around her moving to properly hold her hand, fingers lacing and keeping her close to him with a small tug. “ my treat . ”

IT WAS LIKE A knife in his gut. you’re real good at making people feel worthless. what did that mean, other than what it was at face value? end of the day – it was the truth. he was good at making other people feel worthless. he built his career on using others. from the moment he figured out he could, from the moment he figured out the world never had YOUR back, you had to have your OWN – everyone was collateral damage. sure, there were one or two people in the past who he regretted using. but things were how they were. there was a reason he wasn’t dead yet. there was a reason he was still standing, wearing his scars like a PRIZE. he was older than he ever thought he’d be. he thought he’d die in his thirties, and here he was. the idea of fifty wasn’t an improbable one. he got this far by himself. by using people. STILL, SAM’S WORDS STUNG. and it was because he happened to be one of the few who he actually cared about. he wanted not to. he wouldn’t get far if he let feelings get to him. fifty would be gone before it came if he let people in like this. if he cared when their words stung. if he let them rub salt in his wounds. he had the emotional maturity of a eighteen year old on prom night. and right now, it felt like he just saw his date dancing with someone else. “you seem to know pretty damn good how you bloody feel,” he said. there was pain in his voice. his throat was tight, it stung. his words fought to escape and he was trying to claw them back inside. he didn’t want to fight. for once in his goddamn life he wanted to be honest. the idea that he couldn’t was creeping back up. terrifying him. was this who he really was? “i’d think you’d figure this out by now, but apparently you’re as stupid as you look.” it seemed like this was who he was. he wasn’t anything different. there was one thing he was good at, and that was escaping from situations he was uncomfortable with. throw everyone else under the bus, throw yourself under the bus – anything to get out. tear them down, they’ll leave. it was how it worked. it always worked. “forget it, sam. you’re right! it does make me feel good. seeing you hurting, seeing you in pain. really gets my emotional rocks off. why don’t you cry and give me a proper climax? since you’re so fucking good at being pathetic for me.”
there it was. the anger, the attempt to push and shove and make a fuss so he would back off. he’d done it a million times himself, saying harsh things he didn’t mean in order to protect himself. they were falling down a rabbit hole together, and not knowing how things would end, knowing how vulnerable they would be if they were to actually follow through, scared the hell out of them both. he would let fin spit and hiss, let him spew his venom and it would do nothing but roll off his back. his expression is that of calmness, understanding, and it never changes even after fin’s through degrading him. he knows he doesn’t mean it.
this was what he’d expected from the start. any type of admission of emotion was a show of weakness, and their type didn’t have weaknesses. they were stone faced, cold hearted, toxic words, meaningless relationships, burning bridges every chance they got. it didn’t deter sam, because he’d accepted this already --
he had feelings for fin. it wasn’t an easy conclusion to reach, but he’d come to it on his own, and was determined not to let them fall apart just because this was unfamiliar territory.
without a word of response, he’s stepping in closer, eyes burning into the other man’s gaze. he’s unsure of how fin will react; he never knows, honestly. unpredictable as the weather. he’s ready to be punched, honestly, and at this point he’s expecting it. but it doesn’t deter him as he closes the space between them, pressing lips together and reaching to hold one of fin’s wrists with his hand in case he decided to try to hit him. “ you’re not pushing me away , ” he manages between their lips, free hand coming up to cradle the back of his head. “ you’re not scaring me off , you’re not gonna stand here and shout and cuss and watch me go . i’m not leaving . ”
his heart is pounding, throat tight, guts twisting into knots as he presses their foreheads together. “ you can say whatever you want . i’m not leaving . “

he knew what day it was -- he wasn’t completely ignorant to her background, the trouble she’d gotten into all those years ago. it didn’t change how fondly he felt about her, and didn’t stop him from defending her to those who would call her crazy. he’d dealt with his own version of a psychopath before, and though rafe was nothing like michael, he understood the duress and mental trauma it does dealing with their type was evident. without a second thought, an arm is wrapping around her shoulders, pulling laurie in close to his chest and pressing his nose against her hair. still familiar, even after all this time. she was such a strong person, a survivor, who ruled her trauma, sat atop that throne of blood and knives proudly and refused to back down, teeth bared. but he understood her need, also ... you can’t be strong all the time. especially on the anniversary of your trauma. “ okay . i’ll stay . only if we can order pizza or something . ”
@devotioninked said : i need you. / accepting.
her words stir something in his stomach, though he’s sure she doesn’t mean it in the way he’s thinking. it doesn’t stop him from reacting, however, phone still held to his ear as he stands and starts to pull his boots on. “ i’m on my way , ” he reassures her gently, grabbing his wallet and keys. hattie was always self sufficient, she rarely needed anything or anyone -- people needed her, not the other way around. so to hear her beg; it hurt. “ stay on the phone with me , okay ? ”
@fckiingloser said : “i need you.” / accepting.
there was a certain amount of skepticism that came with the words, hazel eyes glancing to the other man and focusing on his face for a moment, reading his expression, replaying the tone again and again in his head. if there was one thing fin wasn’t, it was an open book, and every word that came out of his mouth had to be taken with a grain of salt. now was no different, but there was something about the words that made his heart hammer and palms clammy. when had he let him have this much power? he was disappointed in himself, to say the least. an exhale of smoke, ashing the cigarette between his fingers before waving down the waiter. “ can we get another round here , please ? ”

FINLEY DID NOT WANT to do this right now. he did not want to do this right now, or at all – if he was being honest. but was he ever? was he ever being honest? with all the years that passed, he wasn’t sure if even he could tell who he really was underneath all the layers he had built up. maybe this was who he really was. maybe underneath everything was the same man from the first layer. a lying piece of shit who honestly did not care about anyone. he’d like that. he’d like not to care. he tried so fucking hard not to care. it was a well practice act and he still missed the steps. he tripped and ended up CARING about someone. and that was when the true mess happened. SAMUEL WAS TIPPING DANGEROUSLY into that category. someone he cared about. someone he currently cared about. they were two cards in the same deck, same suit but of different weights. finley was a jack. samuel was an ace. he felt like he knew him too deeply when he looked at him. sometimes he felt like same saw through him and it terrified him, like most things did when they got too real. finley hated reality. he hated the truth of it. it was so much easier without feelings, without emotions. it was so much easier when you could walk out a door when someone said something too deep. SO, WHY COULDN’T HE walk out the door at the moment? why was he still standing there? it was because his ace was talking to him, because he looked hurt. he looked like he was hurting from what finley had said. and he was. of course he was. he was angry, he had a right to be. but so was finley. he was angry because sam was digging past his armor with that quip. maybe he didn’t even know it. “is that what you think?” the words were not what he meant to come out. he meant to bark back at him, to accept the words and paint himself as the villain of the story. his hands shook. sam brought out bad habits in him. he wanted a cigarette. he wanted to leave. his head was a mess of two feelings, three if you counted the honest truth. “that this makes me feel good? it doesn’t make me feel anything, sam, but like shit. you think you’re the only one hurting here?”
samuel drake had met many people over his time, people like him, people like fin. scoundrels, liars, thieves, the worst that mankind had to offer. he was one of them, lowest of the low, willing to do whatever it took to get what he wanted, to achieve a goal, what have you. his type were common criminals, and besides nathan, he’d never found anyone he’d trust with his life. even rafe had ended in tragedy. everything in his life normally fell apart at the seams, especially something like being intimate with other people, anything he could consider akin to a relationship. the two people he’d loved outside of his brother hated him now -- well, he was sure crystal did, at least. rafe was gone, died cursing the drake name.
but here he stood, face to face with someone of his own breed yet again, trying to make sense where there was none. sam was much like his brother in the respects of his emotions; he tended to wear them on his sleeve, or at least the negative ones. he wasn’t good at bottling things up. staring fin down from across the room, all he could feel was his heart hammering in the hollow of his chest, swallowing hard around the piece in his throat.
the fact was that he cared. he hated himself for it, but he cared. he hadn’t figured out why, or even when it had started, but there was an ache in his chest that came about whenever fin left, or didn’t text, didn’t call -- it scared him to lose the other man. it shouldn’t. but it did. hands rested on his hips, a rather exhausted sigh passing his lips. neither of them were good at this, this type of thing was meant for normal people. not their type.
“ then why don’t you tell me what to think , fin ? ” he finally sighs out; he wasn’t good at feeling things, especially not for someone like him. “ i have no idea what to feel or what to think -- i’m glad you can read other people like a book but i’m having a rough time with you . you’re real good at making people feel worthless . ” he can feel that familiar sensation in his guts, the urge to leave, the run from the situation and pretend that this had never happened. he was kidding himself, however, thinking for even a moment that he would forget finley puckett. “ why should i think i’m any different to you ? ”
