so I just made my first sigil using the leaf sigil method made by @pebblegryphon and it just kind of felt right to combine it with the “put wax over your sigil” thing I saw a few days ago… I let it rest with a stone my grandma likes, since it’s a sigil to make her feel better soon. (I hope this isn’t weird, I’m just really insecure about these things) but do any of you have any advice what to do with this thing?

I have always found it confusing that people interested in magic or mysticism do not seem to show large amounts of interest in theoretical physics.
I do not understand how a religious person can learn about spacetime as a thing which itself moves and bends as we move inside of it, about two quantum particles which are linked together over huge distances, about the gravity of matter and dark matter as a constructive force which pulls things together while dark energy balances it and pushes objects apart, and not find mystical significance in that.
If the gods shaped the universe, does studying the creation not tell us about the creators? Even if we learn something that contradicts what we thought we knew before, would it not be better to accept that we had misunderstood and improve our ability to interact with them?
Replace “gods” with God, or whatever you believe in, if you wish to do so. I am using gods as a generic term because I am unsure of my beliefs regarding an externally existing conscious being or beings.
Maybe, in a roundabout way, people who are interested in magic or mysticism and people who are interested in theoretical physics really ARE learning about the same thing, but in different ways. Taking myself as an example: I can understand the theory behind particles or objects linked together over vast distances, and different forces either pulling things together or pushing them apart. That actually has great mystical significance. But try to put it into scientific terms and my brain shuts down. It doesn’t interpret any of it. It’s gobbledygook. There is no translation. At all. But if there is a bridge between the two, and a way to explain it so that one relates to another (such as the man-thing explaining electrical engineering theories as if it were working with the flow of water instead of electricity - which is understandable to me) then the whole thing might make sense to all parties involved.
I can understand that. And I want to clarify that I don’t think everyone NEEDS these things in whatever they practice, since each person is free to believe whatever they want, I was just surprised that more people do not use them more.
I can definitely get what you’re saying, though, that, lots of the time, we’re all learning about the same thing. What I’m really trying to get at, though, is that astrology as it was “originally” conceptualized necessarily involved what we would call a “scientific” observation of the stars and their movements, and alchemy relied on physical experiments as much as on philosophy, so if a new discovery is made, it’s as relevant to the philosophical areas as to the scientific areas, in my opinion. And I have seen cases where people try to incorporate areas like quantum physics into magic or modern chemistry into alchemy, but much of the time they seem to be based on misunderstandings of the actual concepts involved, or they continue to be inaccessible to people without a background in physics.
What you say about people understanding the same things in different terms also makes sense. Some places offer non-mathematical physics courses for people who would benefit from having some understanding of the concepts but have no need for the computational part of it. Maybe it would be helpful to people if there were a series of “Science for magic” posts where certain concepts were explained as effectively as possible while gearing it towards the possibility of people finding mystical, magical, or theological significance in them.
So basically we’re talking about the disconnect from the physical observation of the natural (and theoretical) world as it connects to and enhances the metaphysical/spiritual/religious world. Right?
That is very much missing from a lot of the modern practices. It’s part of what people don’t even realize is missing, IMO. That comes with the understanding that many people don’t have the opportunities and/or resources to make those observations and/or study the sciences and maths involved in them. For example, people in the inner cities literally cannot see stars. So what was once considered absolutely necessary observations (using the example of astrology) is now completely impossible without some sort of intervention.
With that said, if there were a series of science courses that could link the two, I would personally be ALL OVER that stuff! Can’t guarantee I’d understand any of it, but it would be absolutely fascinating!

I am going to chime in here real quick. I personally love the connect between science and magic, but as you have discussed, I lack any resources to learn about physics and theoretical science from that view point. Yes, the internet is full of information, but where to start? I think something structured like a series of lessons or just posts on the subject would be amazing. They don’t have to be anything special, so long as you get the point across and perhaps link to other material I would love it!

When you want to magically cleanse yourself after a long hard day or calm your mind make tea. Personalizing a Spell
Sometimes, you find a spell you really want to use, but it feels impersonal to just copy what someone else did. So what do you do? You personalize it.
Option 1: Changing/Adding/Removing Ingredients.
This one is fairly self explanatory. You take something you associate with the intent of the spell and add it in, or you take something that doesn’t fit your associations out. To make it more personal to you or the person you’re casting it for, you could add a hair, saliva, or something that belongs to them in. (Make sure to acquire whatever it is legally)
Option 2: Changing the Environment.
This can be a little more complicated, but it’s still relatively easy. You can set up music in the background, perform the spell in a certain place or a certain time, or you could try to feel a certain way when you perform the spell.
Option 3: Changing the Spell.
Last but not least, changing the spell itself. This can be done in multiple ways. You could change the order of the steps, you could change or add words, or you could do all of the above.
Try mixing and matching, and you may create a whole new spell that is completely your own!

within your spellbook/grimoire/BoS/whatever-you-call-it!
personally i have mine so it flips sideways and i prop it up with something like some other books or even a tissue box and looks like this.
(i have some spells [in one of my conlangs & with some runes] woven into the knotwork, hence the asymetry. the bottom half has symbols for the 4 classical elements. of course you can decorate yours as needed)
i use little origami representations for the four elements (inspired by the tarot suits: cup for water/emotional, coin for earth/physical, wand for fire/spiritual, sword for air/mental), which are great because they flatten down and go in a little pouch i glued into my spellbook
as you can see in the first picture, i can use this space to consecrate or cleanse (small) items, or for focus. i also use this for rune readings:

(i don’t have or use tarot cards in my practise but it is possible to read tarot with regular playing cards, just without half of the page & knight suit cards and the major arcana)
another tip is, if you have a familiar or other entity you want to work with, you can learn to make an origami version of them (there are plenty of origami tutorials online); for example, here’s my origami bear familiar representation:
you can probably find other uses for a little in-book altar space, but this is how i use it and i thought it might be helpful to share. it’s kind of nice just being to open up your book and have a magickal space.

One of the hardest lessons to learn when it comes to altars.
If there is any object,substance,idol etc on that thing that doesn’t make you overcome with joy that its there. Then it doesn’t belong there. Keeping things on YOUR altar simply because “that’s the way its done” is a dangerous mindset in magic. You’re basically putting it out there that you don’t trust yourself to make your own choices, that instead you need to hold on to something that you feel no connection to simply for the sake of tradition.
When making an altar. There are three important questions to ask when building.
1. Does this item serve the purpose I want it to? 2,Is this purpose something I actually want/need? 3. Does this item empower me?
Its your space, its your choice. Not Raymond Buckland’s, not your coven’s, not your family’s and certainly not stuck up diva witches on tumblr.
If you don’t like the dual gendered aspects found in many traditions, then don’t include them. If athame make you uncomfortable, then don’t use them. If you find that a WWE wrestling action figure somehow adds to your space in a manner you enjoy. Then put it on there. If that angel figurine your grandma gave you makes you feel happy even though you don’t work with angels, then put it on your altar. You don’t answer to anyone but the person in the mirror. Your space, Your rules.
I had to learn this today and I felt like typing this as a reminder and for perhaps anyone else that needs this :
Often times, you won’t have a dialogue with your gods every day, and sometimes they can even be silent for weeks or months. And that’s okay - part of that is learning to listen, and another part is, they just simply won’t have a message for you all the time. Silence doesn’t detract from their presence in your life nor does it detract from the significance or meaning of your relationship with them. And that can be really difficult to deal with, especially when you read and hear about so many pagans that seem to experience cool interactions with their gods all the time - just remember that you aren’t reading all the times they tried talking or praying to their gods and heard nothing in return. You also won’t get signs from the gods all the time either, and for most people they are rare. All of this is normal and okay. All droughts receive rain at the end - keep your head held high. Your gods care, and they are there, even if you don’t notice.
