Preventing or managing type 2 diabetes involves adopting healthy habits.
While some risk factors like age, ethnicity, and genetics are unchangeable, you have control over your diet, activity, and stress levels.
Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, develops gradually as your body's cells become resistant to insulin.
Key Healthy Habits:
Achieve a Healthy Weight: Losing 5-7% of your current weight and increasing physical activity can significantly reduce your risk. Focus on gradual, sustainable weight loss.
Increase Physical Activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly (e.g., 30 minutes, 5 days a week). Exercise helps manage weight and improves your body's ability to use blood sugar. Start slowly and find enjoyable activities.
Eat Healthy and Control Portions: Prioritize nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean and plant-based proteins, and low-fat dairy. Use the diabetes plate method: half non-starchy vegetables, a quarter starch (preferably whole grain), and a quarter lean protein. Limit saturated fats found in animal products and coconut oil, as they can worsen insulin resistance.
Avoid Added Sugars and Sugary Drinks: Reduce added sugar in your foods and beverages. Read food labels to choose options with less added sugar. Opt for water or unsweetened drinks instead of sugary beverages.
Manage Stress and Get Enough Sleep: High stress can increase blood sugar levels. Lack of sleep can increase insulin resistance. Practice stress-reducing techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or physical activity. Improve sleep by limiting screen time before bed, creating a relaxing sleep environment, and considering a warm bath.
