10- COAS conference

The part of the conference that I went to was interesting but not something I enjoyed. I wish I did not have to work because I would of much rather seen the students present their work.

The part that I say was the contemporary art speaker. He did a wonderful job at giving information of the art but I felt that it was too much talking and really boring. As I looked around the auditorium I saw people dosing off and on their phones which to me meant they lost interest. I think if he would of had the audience more interactive it would of been a bit less boring.  

Already having a Contemporary art class this was not new information. Except a few things that my professor did not touch base on. I do wish I did not have to work because I think I would of been more interested in the research of the student than listening to the heavy loaded text that was being read.

09- Typography

This piece is funny and different. I like that the type is formed in the shape of the hand but I do not like the way the letters are. The font style was not the right choice as the letters look stretched out and look like they are from the 70s. 

The kerning of the piece is off and could use some work. Especially with the word talk. I do get the picture of it being a hand but the D which is supposed to represent the thumb just looks odd and weirdly shaped. I think that it needs to be re done and maybe use an outline or not to stretch the letter out. 

I think it was a good shot at it and it definitely got the message across. The only thing that absolutely bothers me is the font that was used.

08- 413 Typography 

When on Pinterest boards for typography this piece really caught my attention. I think that the type captures the story of the image of being out n the wilderness or native background. The type being only made from lines is a very new way to look at type because normally when I see typefaces they are bubbly or just a sans serif. So seeing just lines transformed into letters is new to my eyes and I like it. 

The font style is clean and sharp which I enjoy as well. Sometimes font can be a little different but be messy, this is just the opposite. It is different but clean and sharp. I like that it is made from shapes and that the same shapes are used throughout the style.

The lightness really gives you the chance to be able to see the letters. If it were bolded you would lose the sharpness and legibility of the letters.

07- Space Gallery Inspiration

This letterhead was a good inspiration piece for the Space Gallery group project. Everything about this piece I do like. It's simple but still has a very professional appeal. 

The logo in the top left has a lot of character to it. Although it is just a circle the text underneath the circle gives the logo a balanced and neat composition. The information on the bottom of the text is a nice flow and I do enjoy the difference of it because normally it is spanned across the bottom so seeing it stacked to the left is a different to the eye and a very nice touch. 

Having the letterhead laid out the way it is gives the employer enough space to write their message without having to run into any problems of being to close to any of the company information.

06- Typography

I do not like this piece. This poster is too busy and heavy that it just loses my attention. I skipped right past this piece of work when looking for inspiration. I can't even stand to look at it while typing it. 

The first thing that bothers me is the way the font is being spelled out from birds. I do not like that and think it takes your eyes away from the title because there are so many birds that it gets overwhelming. The second thing that bothers me is the random text that is around the birds that is the time, presenter, location and day. I think that this is way to small and that unless you are really looking for it you cannot find it. 

I also do not like the way the poster is laid out. I think that the movie poster look is over rated and should really only be done for movies. It just doesn't fit looks. It seems like this poster is for a play and I feel like it gets portrayed as a movie because of the way the poster is laid out. I do not like and would change just about everything on this poster.

05- Typography

This piece automatically caught my eye. Absolutely amazing how they took an octopus tenticle and made it into the ampersand symbol. 

The b&w of the photo is very message sending and the boldness of the black really captures your attention. The detail that was put into this piece is wonderful and was paid attention to. Being able to capture the detail of the suckers are amazing. 

Seeing this piece opened up my eyes that you can turn anything in the world into a symbol or words. The past few inspiration pieces have changed my view on them. Seeing this makes me want to go experiment with things that I have laying around the house.

04- 413 Typography

Searching through Pinterest for typography sample I came across this one and immediately started chuckling. I find this poster super awesome! This poster use of type is fun and unique but you are able to still capture the image and message behind the poster. 

The designers use of the condiments to spell out what they are was very creative. I do really enjoy that not all the condiments are in the same style. Although the ketchup and mustard are similar they still have their own distinguished look. 

My least favorite part of the condiments would have to be the lettuce. Although I know that it is lettuce, it is not easy to ready. There is just something about it that i just don't like. All the others are easy to read and you can tell what they are made out of but the lettuce for some reason doesn't look like lettuce. 

Overall the piece is very interesting and eye catching. I would love to see more from this artist!

03- Typeforce

Typeforce was absolutely amazing! It was the first one that I have ever gone too and I wish that I would have gone to more. I will definitely be going to the upcoming shows. I even took my mom with me and she said it was awesome and would do it again. 

Walking into Typeforce I wasn't sure what to expect or what it was even about. I could honestly say that I was super impressed and inspired by a lot of the art work that was there. Looking back on it now I wish I would of taken pictures. 

The piece that I really enjoyed was the number series. It gave the viewers a chance to interact with the work but also take a closer look at the typography that was used. Each number plate had a different font and being able to be up close just gave you a better look at the font and how the piece was developed. The other piece that really captured my eye was the live artist. I thought that was pretty neat that he was designing freely on the spot. I stood there watching for quite sometime and was just in amazement.

I am glad that Kel made this a mandatory assignment for us otherwise I wouldn't of experienced the wonderful Typeforce and artist that I did. I will definitely be attending the Typeforce openings that I can. Thanks Kel!

02-413 Typography Group project

I find this super cool and original. For our group project on typography, taking photos of the letters was a neat way to experiment with my camera and my eye of design. I originally took photos of things around my house and things around that looked like letters.

I specifically like this piece because it shows different dimensions with the multiple size buttons and the color variation is similar but not the same. I enjoy that it looks like a cursive O and not print. I think that by giving it that look it gives it a lot more life. 

The variation of the buttons was a great addition. I think that if they were all the same size it would not have the neatness that it does now. Also being pasted on the woodgrain backdrop really brings out the turquoise and blue color of the buttons. 

For the group project I wish I would have used a lot more things around my house than using the outdoors. I have learned that the things around your house are more effective than those outdoors. That is my own opinion and what I have learned from the project.

01: 413-Space Gallery Inspiration

When looking on Tumblr for project ideas and color palettes I came across this piece of stationery. It caught my eye because of the welcoming colors and also the type. 

I really enjoy the boldness of this piece. All the elements can standout on their own and I think that is very important when designing.  I wouldn’t change anything about this stationery.

The color palette that was chosen for this company. is the first thing that I enjoy It is warm and inviting. The colors also balance each other out very well. The orange is not to bright for the blue or green. The typeface for this piece is very bold and eye catching. It stands out on its own which I think it great because ultimately you want people to remember your company. The simple script typeface works well with the color palette.

I really enjoy the layout of the folder as well as the business cards. The align left and san serif font really work well together. The business card is a strong element because it is not heavily loaded and it is simple with the logo on one side and information on the other. I like the small pop of orange that was used to highlight I believe the persons name.

10- 414 Zine Inspiration

This spread has a nice flow to it and the white space works well with the layout. The margins in between the columns is very nicely placed. With the text the things I would change would be the text overlaying onto the image because with the image being a lighter color and the text being a smaller san serif the text gets lost and is not the easiest to read. 

I really like the photo on the right side and how it rolls onto the top of the page. I think that is a neat way to spread out the photo and is interesting. I have never seen that before. The white space beneath the text on the right side works well and frames the page. I am not sure that putting something on the bottom left of the rocket ship image would be the right thing because I feel that it would make it to heavy. 

The one thing I would change overall about the spread would be the text to the far right and left and it being to close to the edge. Although I like it, I don't like it and think that margins would be better. I do however like the centered caption or poll quote. 

This is a great inspiration, but doesn't inspire me for my work just yet because I do not have a lot of text. I would however keep this as a reference of inspiration incase one day I do have a text heavy zine or work to do.

09- Map Zine cover Inspiration

This is a different and neat zine cover. With of the topics I thought this would be a cool cover to show the three sides that I am mapping. The cover is very interesting and for me kept me wondering what is inside.

I really like the way they broke up the image. It gives it a unique form and the image gives somewhat of a 3D effect. The image break up into triangle shapes give the consistency to the title with the one A being a triangle.

The placement of the text works very well. Because the hair of the woman is so dark the text actually gets highlighted and becomes brighter. The triangle as an A is a nice touch as well. I imagine it to be a logo of some sort and I think incorporating it into the name of the zine was very clever. I don't think that placing the title else where would give the image much attention. For this cover your focus is supposed to be on the image and I think placing the text else where would take away from it and the cover would then be lost and heavy. Placement was smart.

08- Map zine

This map is particularly interesting because it is just mapped through Google Maps. When doing my zine I felt that I the map was the hard part and felt like it took the most time from me. Now seeing this map it shows that I was over thinking and that it really wasn't as hard as I thought. I was just thinking about it and looking at it to much.

With the places in my zine being so far apart I was unsure at how to map them. I thought it was going to be impossible to capture my journey. Coming across this map threw a couple ideas into my mind for mapping my journey. I originally thought about doing something like this and dropping pins on my destinations, but then I thought it would be silly. 

Looking back at it I think I should have mapped my zine this way because of the personal story it had behind it. I think this map would of worked better because the type of map is used everyday and is personal. I think it would of fit my story better. although I am happy with the map I did I think that having a more realistic map would have worked a little better to tie my story and map together.

07- Zine Cover

This cover really caught my eye because it was unlike the rest of covers on the Pinterest zine search. I wasn't sure what cover I could use or create to go well with the topic and seeing this has given me ideas that I can create for my zine cover to make it different from the rest.

The collage of images is busy, but really neat. It gives you a summary as to what the zine is going to be about. I do wish there was a title on the page though because I feel like with out it you are playing a guessing game with all the images. The author could of intended for it to be a guess game. This cover reminds me of the I Spy book series. 

I came across the cover and it kept me interested so I looked into the website that was with the pin. My findings about this particular zine were not what I expected. The zine is not like the I Spy series or meant for words. In fact it is to introduce a fabric which totally blew my mind. Introducing a pice of fabric through a zine is completely awesome and a way that I have never seen before. I was totally mind blown after doing extra research

06- Map Zine Inspiration

The layout of the type on these two pages is simple and intriguing. The use of type and using two different font families was a nice touch. The thing that really caught my eye was the simplicity yet exciting layout of content as well as the center flip out that is found.

The flip in the center is what inspired me the most for the placement of the map. Because my project was so personal I did not want to have it printed inside of the zine, so with this inspiration I had a pull out map. Although there are many things about this piece that I do like. The main focus for this piece was the flip out in the center which was a huge inspiration in the process.

I do like the clip to hold pages down and it was a good idea but I think that after a while I would forget or just get tired of it. The staple binding in the center is simple and goes with the simplicity of the zine. 

The consistency of the page layout is very appealing. I do enjoy that the text on the left is centered and more like a definition or a quote. The right side of the page varies through out the zine which I find interesting and keeps the readers looking for more. The flip center right page has this really neat look of looking like it was taken from the page with the picture being behind the white text box. I thought that was a nice touch.  The last photos right page is very interesting and at first I thought it wasn't working well but after looking at it for a while I saw that it flowed nicely together with the title going vertical and the text being centered which is consistent with the left side. The picture is what breaks up the page from being so text heavy,

05- 414 Monster Zine Inspiration

The simple and intriguing layout is what really catches my eyes. I really enjoy the layout the small center pictures are frame nicely with the white space around it. It by far has to be one of my favorite layouts that I have seen for any zine so far. 

I really enjoy the simplicity that the layout has. In this instance simple was better. Everything is balanced very nicely on the pages. The red text captures you eye and after you read it you automatically look at the picture, or vise versa, look at picture then read about it. 

I do like the text being in the top left corner and I think that it wouldn't work else where, but I am in between on it going over the picture (page 3.) I do think that if it was moved or wrapped around the picture I don't think that it would be as balanced. The large page numbers also balance out the page and fill in some white space. This layout has great hierarchy with the alignment of all the elements

I have been thinking about doing my zine black and white to vary my portfolio, but I am not sue that leaving my illustrations black and white would do them justice because of my topic so maybe using this as inspiration and doing the page numbers and text in b&w and the photo in colors.

04- 414 Map Zine Inspiration

I found this map on Pinterest and with the project being a map zine I became inspired by this specific map. With the topic I chose it was hard thinking of a way to map it all together because the places were so far apart and this map seemed to do the topic justice.

The part I really like about this map is that it is different from the regular maps that you normally see. I really enjoy the illustrations and the feel they give you as if you were out camping in the woods. The grid used is a great addition but I don't think that it is necessary. I think that the path gets lost by the grid that is in the background. 

I like that the map is numbered with the important parts of the journey. I also enjoy that the map is easy to read. If I had never been to the place by looking at the map I would be able to find where things were for the trip. 

The only thing I don't like about this map is the font used for the numbers. I think that it is too bold and it becomes hard to read. Although some of the numbers are clear others are not such as the 5 and 3 which look just alike and the 6. So the font is just about the only thing that I would change within this map.

Because my places were located in different cities I felt that this map was the right inspiration because although it has a path you can follow the places are numbered and you ultimately follow the numbers and not the path.
