I'm not convinced any of these people deserve John Logan (except for Tucker). Like, did literally any single person ask him if he was okay or consider his stressors/issues in the entire season?

Okay, so I'm not trying to imply that this was the intention of the writers, but sometimes I think about how Jess stole change from a donation cup and he doesn't answer when Luke asks him why he would do that. Personally, I think the show just decided petty theft would be a good "bad kid" trait to give him where it's objectively wrong, but not a "you can't come back from this" kind of thing. But that doesn't stop me from thinking about what the context of that could actually be, given what we learn about Jess' history later.

Assuming we go with the Jimmy retcon that Jess never knew his father (and I am going to go with that since the show did a whole episode about it), that means this is a kid who was abandoned by his father for his entire life, whose mother we know is flaky, irresponsible, and not financially stable. So Jess, as a child, was in a household with no financial support from his father, and likely very limited/erratic financial support from his mother (let's not even get in to the emotional support, or lack thereof). Wouldn't it track that as a kid you might begin to take things like, say, change from a donation cup at a supermarket or a bodega? Maybe collect it so there's a dollar here or there for food when your mom isn't working and is off with a new boyfriend. And even when you get older and you're living somewhere you're gonna have food, maybe that compulsion is still there, like a safety blanket; "just in case." Because you can't trust that you'll always have money for food and you can't trust that the people who say they're going to take care of you will and you can't trust you won't just be pawned off again when the next adult doesn't want you either.

Do I think the show meant for us to follow this specific line of thinking? No. I don't believe they were thinking particularly deeply about the possible implications of Jess stealing the change and it's just a thing he does for the audience to know he's a "bad" boy. But they can't stop me from thinking it anyway.

Sometimes I just sit here and think about how funny the list of “Jess is the antichrist” offenses against Stars Hollow in season 2 actually is. It’s like-

1. Stole some change from a donation cup

2. Stole a garden gnome

3. Staged a fake crime scene with tape and sidewalk chalk

4. Smokes

5. Wears rock and/or heavy metal band t-shirts

6. He’s rude and doesn’t like to talk to people?

So, like, clearly this teenager is a hardened criminal.

And with his background as it is, it’s honestly a miracle that he was already even remotely stable when he showed up at Luke’s! Like if you told me I had to take in a teenager who was abandoned by his father, neglected by his mother, who was “getting into trouble”, and grew up in unstable living conditions in NYC, and then the worst thing he does week one is steal some change and a garden gnome and doesn’t want to talk to me ??? I cannot begin to explain how relieved I’d be.

I followed you like a million years ago for some fandom i dont even remember which but without fail whenever i get into something that doesnt have a lot of fandom there you are reblogging gifsets of it. Thank you for putting young sherlock on my dash o7

oh my gosh, I don't know anyone else who's watched it!! I always seem to find myself drawn to shows with small or nonexistent fandoms, so it's good to know I'm not alone! I'm really hoping they get a renewal; this version of the Sherlock/Moriarty dynamic so deserves to be explored further. I also just love this iteration of Mycroft.
