Orders are Orders —Common saying in the Wehrmacht
In the aftermath of WWII during the Nuremberg trials, many Nazi officers made the claim that ‘They were only following orders’ as an excuse to their crimes. This is a form of ethical subjectivism, but it is difficult to tell if it is because of cultural subjectivism or ethical relativism. If they believed that what they were doing is right simply because their officers told them, it would be that they were influenced by the cultural subjectivism of the military. However, if they committed the actions because they themselves saw it as right, it would be ethical relativism since they were applying their own morals on the situation. Either way, the debate about whether or not it is right to follow orders simply because they are given to you will continue until it can be solved with a objective moral standard.
