Deleting everything and moving to this new blog, I realized I don't want this to be a side bug and I would rather have it be a main so I made a new account. You can follow me there if you'd like
(Some are canonical, some are just hcs based on nothing lmao)
Now to begin, I want to say that I am very new to this community and due to that I don't know every lore detail nor every small bits of info shared in the interviews by the creators. I haven't read the comics, but I did see a bunch of info online and tried to find pages to prove it. So, if it's dog water it's probably because I couldn't find all of the info necessary.
Also, one of the most important points of interest is WW2 and The Great Patriotic War. This whole discussion begun partially because I was interested in finding out which characters could/would participate in those events (it started because of Medic, until I understood that there are other people that could be affected by the war)
Anyway, expect a lot of more yapping about historical stuff and speculation lmao.
- Confirmed Canonical info -
Scout: it's a pretty known fact that he was born in 1945 , as the only character with an age bluntly stated in some additional stuff to the game. In game Scout is 23. The game takes place in 1968. Nothing more to say, there's nothing to really speculate. The age of his parents will be discussed later.
Sniper: apparently the second youngest in the team! Born around 1942 in New Zealand, but adopted and raised in Australia. Obviously didn't participate in the WW2 being a toddler during this time. He's around 26 in the game.
And that's basically everything fully canonical we know. Everyone else is a bit more speculative for me since even Demo's age isn't clearly stated. Next will have some speculation present.
- Canonical Dates present, but nothing concrete -
Demoman: the only thing we canonically know is that he's in his thirties during the game. Proof: his mom's own words! Iirc she said something along the lines of "it's a shame you sit on your butt all day. Your in your thirties!" Or something like that (couldn't find the exact page). I hc Tavish to be around 38 years old during the game. I think it's a nice balance, he's still pretty young, but already has experience in life.
Engineer: now if I'm to believe an info I've found on TFC, it takes place in 1930. And if I'm not mistaken the engeneer there is a father to our beloved Del. So I'm gonna speculate that Engie was born around 1923-1928. Idk, he feels a bit older, but not much older than the others. Which would make him around 40-45. Again, I have nothing to base my theories on aside from him having a confirmed family. His granddad seems already quite old during 1890. And he, passed away in 1912, when his son, TFC engineer, was presumably already grown up. I'm just spitballing ideas here, cuz Engie feels around 42-45 yo.
Soldier: Now, here the WW2 thing comes into place. The only thing we know about Soldier's background is that he was declined being drafted into WW2 by everyone, went to Europe himself and stopped killing nazis when he heard the war was over, in 1949. Now USA technically joined the war in 1939-1940 as it began selling weapons to the fighting countries. But officially it joined in 1941, after an attack on Pearl Harbor. Why do I mention this? Well, because now I'm in a conundrum. Soldier could've been realistically denied by any reason: from being a bit insane for 🦅❗🇺🇸AMERICA🇺🇸 ❗🦅 or just being not old enough. Soldier could've been a very passionate teen trying to join in on something way beyond his years. So he realistically could be anywhere from 40-45. Tho, for the funnsies I'mma make him 45 years old during the game. I hc he was born in 1923 and was of age in 1941, but he was already a bit too insane for the army. And I hc that he "joined the war" And went to Europe in like early 1945 or even later, like '46-47. Bro really wanted to participate, but was way too late lmao.
Those were just some healthy speculation made from some canonical info, even if it's a bit blurry and relies more on assumptions rather than reason. The last section will be even more unfounded and just crazy ramblings lmao.
- Almost to No concrete info whatsoever-
Pyro: no idea. I'mma mention them first since I genuinely couldn't really speculate about their age due to not having even a smallest bit of the info. So I'mma put them around Demo's age. Idk, 36-37. Born in 1931-1932.
Now to the fun part.
Heavy: I'mma start with him, cuz I have less hcs about him and want to leave Medic (the characters who kick started this brain rot for this post). So all we know of Misha's backstory is that in 1941, after being in gulag (forced labor camps) for 3 months, he and his family escaped while burning the place to the ground. They were put in Gulag due to Heavy (and I'm assuming his father (rip)) being anti revolutionary. Now it's nothing unordinary sadly in being put it gulags for this, but it's pretty uncommon for the whole families to be put in the same camp. If the reader wants to indulge in some history lessons they can learn about enemy of the people/nation or ALZhIR, but I digress. Now on there were two quite interesting parts to this situation. In comics about meet the team we learn, that his prison break happened in his "childhood", while later, in a flashback, he appears older (but that might be just a style/trying to keep a character recognizable). So Heavy was most likely under 18 in 1941. my personal hc is that he was from 15 to 17 in 1941. Which means he was born around 1924-1926. For the hcs about his youth I believe his father was an author or a literature critic and most likely from. That's where he got his love for Russian literature. Also I believe he sadly participated in war during his teenage years, but wasn't in an official Red Army. He joined a partisan group to protect his family and motherland (despite what happened to him, he loves Russia. It's possible). In 1945 he participated in liberating Europe and around that time probably left the country for America. Mb later, I didn't figure this out yet. Tho he'd have to leave soon as Stalin's repressions would become even crueler after the war.
Medic: ooooof, now here's the person who made me refresh my WW2 knowledge. I was interested in his political affiliation during this period and tried to research this question. I stumbled upon contradicting evidence. From ppl assuming he was a nazi due to him being a crazy German scientist stereotypes and "well he's sadistic and German, so he must be a former nazi" Arguments to some saying that Valve purposefully wanted for him to NOT be a fan of a mustache fella, claiming it would be "boring". Now, I admit I have no proof as I was never able to find any sources, I'm inclined to believe in the latter. I also heard that he was raised during this time, so I believe he wasn't 18 at 1939 too. Hitler didn't become a furher until 1933 iirc, so Medic must be pretty young at that time. Another piece of information people are using to try to figure out his age is his words about "Another fifty years" To Satan. While I do believe it could've been just turn of phrase and him basically trying to leave even longer without being tied to his real age, I did keep it in mind. Another thing I had to keep in mind is the age of recruitment in Nazi Germany. This age changed during the war, as at first it was 18-45 and after the change of tide in Eastern front, it became 16-60. Basically I tried to figure out a perfect age for Medic to be raised around nazis while not participating in the war itself. All of this lead me to the year of 1925. I believe it's perfect for multiple reasons. Mr Ludwig would be only 8 when Hitler came to power and only 14 when ww2 began, thus complying with the idea of him being raised around nazi ideology. Me myself I believe Medic wasn't a nazi, since he'd consider it great a waste different specimen for his experiments. I hc that he always wanted to become a doctor, but didn't agree with the country's ideology. I hc that around 1943-1944 when he became 18-19 he'd try to apply for medical universities, but that would lead to him being basically forcefully drafted into the front lines. Around that time he'd run away from Germany and only get and quickly lose his medical licence in America. So during the game's timeline he'd be 43 years old.
Spy: now similarly to Pyro, we have almost zero info on his childhood years. For me, he's kind of an unspoken leader of team and I think he's kinda the oldest of them. He seems the most experienced out of these buffoons. And due to my love for pretty numbers, I placed his year of birth as 1915, making Spy 53 during the game. But what was important to me is that he is French. Now why, you might ask? Well, because of the nazi occupation of France. After pondering for some time, I came up with a hc that he was part of la Résistance. Quick history lesson: in 1940 Third Reich invaded Belgium and Netherlands to get into France (their shared border was very secured due to the events of WW1). After that they pretty quickly occupied most of the France, leaving a small portion in the South kind of unoccupied. And there the resistance was born. A lot of groups of men and women came together in armed groups (some or most of led by Charles de Gaulle) to try to free their homeland from the invaders. So I think it would be interesting for Spy to begin his espionage career during WW2. He was supposed to get into the enemy's territory, find the intelligence, sabotage them and come back with info. After the war was over he'd leave for America for some reasons. Also I think it would be pretty plausible for Spy and Scout's mother to be in their thirties when they had Scout. He was her eighth child after all.
Yeah, basically that's it lmao.
TLDR:
Scout: born in 1945. 23 years old in the game.
Sniper: born in 1942. 26 yo in the game.
Demoman: born in 1930. 38 yo in the game.
Engineer: born in 1923-1928. 42-45 yo in the game.
Soldier: born in 1923. 45 yo in the game.
Pyro: ??? hc born in 1931-1932. 36-37 yo in the game.
Heavy: born in 1924-1926. 42-44 yo in the game.
Medic: born in 1925. 43 yo in the game.
Spy: born in 1915. 53 yo in the game.
That's all lmao. I know it's a lot, but some of these ideas lived rent free in my head for this whole day. And I thought using real world history and some interviews would be a fun exercise and theory crafting.
There's nothing I love more than yapping and historical speculation. I was gonna make a similar post but I'll just add to this one because I agree other than a few points.
Based on that photo we have of Tfc Engineer and tf2 Engineer together, he's probably a bit older than that. Since that photo was taken during the TFC mercenary days and engineer looks to be like 10 to 12 years old. 1920 is a clean number.
Heavy has a degree in Russian literature which he needs to have obtained at some point, and it probably wasn't when his family was hiding in Siberia. Being a scholar is also a good reason for being thrown in a Gulag. I also think Heavy likely hasn't been in America very long, due to his poor English despite being very intelligent. So he likely hasn't had time to get a degree in America. He probably already had it before and was in his 20s in 1941. A doctorate takes 8 years so at least 1915
Regarding Spy he needs to be in America in either 1944 or the first few months of 1945 in order to father Scout who in born in 1945. We also see Spy present when Scout is a toddler so we can assume he hung around for at least a year or two with Scout's ma afterwards, so it wasn't just a temporary thing where he returned to France immediately for the war. And Germany didn't surrender until May 1945 (Japan surrendered later but that's less relevant to Spy) which means that he left before the war ended. Spy also describes himself as young and foolish when he had Scout (while Scout is dying in the comic) and 30 seems kind of old to still consider yourself young and irresponsible. So he's probably younger, I like 1921 because it makes him 23 when he had Scout and that parallels.
As much as I also don't wanna make Medic a Nazi as well he's definitely older than that. Quoting the game "The men in his unit called him 'The Bavarian Butcher'" I like to think this means he was a field medic who did fucked up experiments on his own men, then lost his medical license in Germany due to doing these things and then fled to America escape further repercussions. I think anywhere from 1910 to 1920 works, depending on whether you think he'd just be a field medic or a full-on field surgeon.
