Oscar de la Renta Fall 2020 runway
Hello! I made a dress from scratch for the Renaissance Faire. It took me six months to make the chemise, hoop skirt, under skirt, over skirts, French knot embroidered bodice, crown and jewelry. I am very excited to wear it this year despite how serious I look in the photos!
Innocent World - Belle Epoque JSK
I really loved this skirt I saw on Unique Vintage’s site so I did a drawing of it (to resist buying it lol)
My personal ranking of The Life of a Showgirl (with commentary) coming from someone who is close in age to Taylor Swift and has been listening since debut in 2006.
1. Elizabeth Taylor
“I’d cry my eyes violet Elizabeth Taylor” 10/10 no notes for this entire track. Lyrics/melody/production it’s amazing!!
2. The Fate of Ophelia
I could tell I liked this one from the start but it grew on me to how much I like it now, it was ranked 3 previously and has risen to 2. The music video is beautiful, I’m obsessed with it! So catchy, so fun, but also so beautiful with a slightly darker sound 10/10.
3. Father Figure
I love songs with this kind of storytelling that paint such a clear picture of the look and feel of the setting and characters. (I’m reminded of why I love I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can).) I love the framing of the narrator being the father figure, even when the perspective flips. The sound is very smooth and groovy. I can also imagine Beyonce singing a song like this, though probably more Beyonce style, she would pull off the lines super well which I just think is cool.
4. Opalite
I didn’t like this song at first lol, I was annoyed by the “oh oh oh oh” part in the chorus. But then the song got stuck in my head and I had to listen to it again and I realized how catchy and fun it is and it has some nice lines lyrically.
5. CANCELLED!
This is kind of silly but I love this track lol, I think it’s funny. I like the strings and darker sound again, I added this to my Halloween playlist. Me, a random 30 something nerd who lives in the Midwest and goes to movies alone: GOOD THING I LIKE MY FRIENDS CANCELLED. I LIKE THEM CLOAKED IN GUCCI AND IN SCANDAL
6. Honey
This has a fun, light beat and the storytelling is clear and sweet. Love this one!
7. Wood
This was a standout for me on first listen because the melody was so immediately catchy and the “knock on wood” part was memorable and addictive. It fell pretty quick though and the replay value ended up being not as much as I was expecting. I don’t feel the metaphors are too graphic, I actually thought they were fun and just the right amount for a silly song like this, coming from someone who thought Sabrina Carpenter’s last album was taking some of the sex stuff into a graphic area that just leaned gross for me at times, I was surprised when I heard some people felt that way for this song.
8. The Life of a Showgirl (feat. Sabrina Carpenter)
This is a good addition to the album and a great choice to end it. As a standalone track it is less memorable, but I appreciate the theatrical lean. Very Swiftian (lol) storytelling. Overall I have warm feelings towards it.
9. Actually Romantic
This would be more fun to listen to for me if the melody was stronger maybe? The sound and lyrics work together, but I don't feel very drawn to listen to it. I don't find the lyrics cringe, I think they work fine for what the whole song is doing, but overall it just doesn't hook me I guess.
10. Ruin the Friendship
My first listen of this song was strongly negative lol, the storytelling twist felt jarring and off-putting. Overall it has a really nice sound and great storytelling lines, but it feels out of place in the album, and I think the choice of this vibe following the song it does follow isn't a good one for the flow.
11. Wi$h Li$t
This isn't bad but I don't connect with very much going on here lol so I feel meh about it overall. I did want to note that I enjoyed some of the lines, like the imagery of the driveway with the basketball hoop, I think stuff like that is clever because it is weirdly specific and yet does a perfect job of evoking the exact feeling/setting it is wanting to.
12. Eldest Daughter
I feel a strong personal contempt and resentment towards this song. The best tracks on this album are the first four, and as they each play it creates such a build up and then is suddenly cut by this and the rest of the album feels like a drop off. This album didn't need a piano ballad and the writing is bad. The rest of the songs on this album sound worse only because this one plays before them.
Randomly I miss old DeviantArt and LiveJournal a lot recently…I want to write a DeviantArt journal so bad 😔
