it really sucks how many movies directed at young girls feature a plot where the main character girl is harassed, bullied, effectively catcalled, etc., by an obnoxious boy secondary character, and this is set up to be a primary character conflict between the two, but the conflict is resolved not by the boy changing or becoming kinder to her but by the girl coming to appreciate and love or care about or protect or save him despite how awful he is to her. I understand the authorial impulse behind writing such a story, it makes sense to write a story about two enemies coming to understand and appreciate each other through a conflict forcing them to come together, but because the character development is within the girl main character (which also makes sense) what these plots actually implicitly say to young girls is that boys will be awful to you and you should just accept it and learn to love them anyway, and that it's on you for feeling bad when boys try to make you feel bad. And of course, this is really just a foundational idea within misogyny and patriarchy broadly, a very important one for protecting and enforcing the objective material relations between men and women.
