Also RIP to Teenie Hodges, author of this song, among many other classics. I had the privilege of meeting him briefly at a studio around 2006, when I was just a little too young to get how big of a deal he was (there is photographic evidence, though!). But now that I'm here, thanks for everything.
A little belated, but in the middle of this 70-hour work week, I have to take a second to say: Rest in peace, Bobby Womack. One of the greatest singers and composers who ever lived, and a hell of a guitarist too. Check out his rhythm playing here, behind LA jazz grouch Gabór Szabó. It's so much better than the lead guitar.
Of the Al Green singles, I think this one is my favorite. Always stuck out as kind of an oddball on the Al compilation. Certainly the most underrated. Great fake-out at the beginning; the arrangers prepare us for a ballad but we get a rocker. The clave is perfect; the horns are about as ragged as Memphis lets itself get (check out the great clunker(s) around 2:20). It's not a dead-straight mechanical groove, though. It's got the very slightest hint of a shuffle, at least to my ears. I see why this one didn't hit like "Take Me To The River" did, but I'd take this any day.
CHEAT DAY
I can't fucking believe I'm insane enough to spring this nonsense on my treasured readers, but I think your lives will all be better for having seen this. This is in fact Carl Lewis, the Olympic sprinter, singing a song for peace. It's no "What's Going On," but the last 30 seconds or so could pass for a remake of Debbie Does Dallas directed by Satan.
Capsoul, you bastards, you did it again. I can't stop coming back to you. This song defines everything that "rare groove" means to me: no slickness, no polish, absolutely no right to be a perfect record, and yet it is. Other points:
I don't think that even KC and the Sunshine Band would dare a chord progression that corny in the bridge, and if they would, they're the only ones in the universe besides Bill Moss
Could this be considered proto-rapping?
It almost sounds like something the Sugarhill Gang would think it a good idea to sample...after a few bags of shrooms

This, "The Payback," and the deranged Capsoul single "Sock It To 'Em Soul Brother" (to be featured tomorrow) are probably my top three favorite funk guitar parts ever. But "Love Rollercoaster" is the only one with a chilling urban legend to match. Seriously, read that link; it's comedy gold.
Things that stick out: Oddly heavily distorted, sustained rhythm guitar on the backbeat, a far cry from that slick Northeastern "chk." The drums don't really kick in 100%, even though this song could probably benefit from one of those huge MFSB backbeats (or my headphones just blow, also possible). I love this intro. It doesn't excuse itself until the precise moment that you're so sick of it that you just want it to fuck off, and then the vocals hit right at the last acceptable second.
Something about this video is transfixing. Pretty sure we're not looking at a live performance, but that aside, this has got to be the most casual I've ever seen a performer take Soul Train. I can't tell if the dance steps or the wardrobes are more nonsensically loose.
Great song aside, the accompanying slide show is a rollercoaster of kickass vintage hairstyles (facial hair too). I'm especially fond of the mullet at 0:25. Al Wilson will always be welcome in my queue.
Not the same song as the '30s ballad (made famous by Coleman Hawkins, but I'm partial to Lester Young's version). I can't tell just by listening if this is Philly proper or not--they're from Jersey, and the influence is there, but it sounds like they went down one peg from Gamble & Huff on the lush ladder. A great listen regardless.
Nice song, pleasant and unassuming voice, and I like the drummer-one-hand-keyboard trick. Co-written by Thom Bell, apparently, which makes sense with the cool Philadelphian modulations.
Whatever wretched person put this mix together did a great job. Probably the genre that lost its initial charm the quickest. All this shit sounded so cool when it came out (according to my dad, anyway; I only have vague memories of its tail end from the stereo systems out in the 'hood when I was tiny) and it sounds so corny now. And by corny I mean fantastic, and I'm having a great time listening to this straight through. New jack swing contained multitudes, clearly.
