Train Rides
I hadnāt taken a train since that weekend. Since she waved goodbye to me on the platform tears in her eyes. Looking back on the tears they seem out of place to me now, she was the one that left me. There she stood however waving. A loose white tank hang from her shoulders wet with the sweat of a Florida afternoon. I sat facing the front of the train. We lurched forward and people swam by on the platform. Then she filled the window. Arms crossed holding a small bag tears in her eyes. At that moment the train seemed to slow to a near stop. Time moved at a glacial pace. We made eye contact her eyes brighten slightly as she slide past. Mine dropped to the floor to torn to watch the slow crawl anymore. I kept my eyes down as an attendant scrambled up and down the aisle first for a salty tasting snack and second with a drink cart which I gladly accepted. I waited holding my phone, hoping deep down that there would be something, a final Iām sorry or even loftier I take it back, but after ten minutes nothing. I looked up and out the window and watched as the Florida landscape speed pass, time resuming its normalcy. I stared out that window for awhile secretly hoping something would give, but knowing nothing would. After awhile I looked inside the cabin. There was a women I hadnāt seen seated a few seats away. She and the people she was with spoke fluent Spanish, which I knew none of, even with my several years living in south florida. I noticed that after every few sentences she spoke with the people she was with she snuck a few glances over at me. I waited for a moment and took a good glance at her. She was going probably twenty two to twenty five. She had large brown eyes that were quite soft in color. She held a deep stare but with her eyes it wasnāt intimidating it was warming. She wore a tight white tee that clung to her in all the right ways. The skirt or shorts, it was hard to tell from my seat quit at about mid thigh. Below her eyes she had a sly smile. Ever few minutes the group would laugh and I could see her smile and giggled calculated and innocent. We made eye contact and she smiled. Her soft skin was pocketed with bumps from an outbreak of acne. Whatās most compelling is that it didnāt take away from her beauty, it actually added to it, it made her human. It was a flaw a very small flaw, but it made her something I couldnāt take my eyes off. And for a second I swore time slowed down.
