chidi is, to say the least, confused. one mess-up, he can hardly fault michael for. from what he’s told him, this is a pretty new position to him as well and a few mess-ups are probably to be expected. but several? something seems fishy, to say the least.

but this is supposed to be paradise, right? this is supposed to be his perfect place and this is supposed to be the person to understand him on the deepest level. so he tries not to let confusion show on his face, shakes his head and hopes that whatever monty may be wanting to tell him will clear all of this up and give them both a good laugh.  ❝ sure! that’s what all of this is about, right? soulmates, and all. ❞

a nervous laugh ---- a way to stall the inevitable situation wherein he might force himself to explain privately some part of his life. not the murders of course ( though of these, he believes his conscience clean ---- he’d merely influenced those six deaths, nothing more ) but the trouble of his family, and the trial for that crime he had not commit. had he not been acquitted when reasonable doubt had arisen? what harm could it bring!

“ well, you see, i am montague navarro ---- or rather montagye d’ysquith navarro, but that’s an unimportant detail ---- ” ( how dare paradise neglect that most important part of his name ) “ but i never did those things. in fact, i lived quite privately after i was acquitted of a very false murder charge. they’ve mistaken much of my identity. ”

chidi’s smile remains wide and excited when monty first speaks – a million questions and debates already at the tip of his tongue. god, he can’t wait to discuss the fine line between doing good and self-righteousness and the historical development of whatever countries the other may have visited in great detail. it’s going to be so much fun.

smile falters, though, when it gets mentioned that he hasn’t worked in human rights. that’s – strange. but perhaps he’s right, michael may have just mixed something up, added something chidi wouldn’t want to diminish to a detail. he blinks, tries to keep the smile upright and hopes.  ❝ – oh. okay. um – how about revolutionizing agriculture, then? i would love to hear about that. ❞

“ well ---- no. ” monty has understated, it seems, the nature of this slip of the architect’s part. not only are these details of occupation incorrect, but as are the very foundations of the life described to him by michael. perhaps underlying are some similar details ( monty had raised himself up from the very bottom of the social ladder, albeit in a way that might not be viewed very positively ) but the rest of it ---- all wrong.

and part of him thinks that ought not say anything of it ---- keep his mouth shut, and lie as he always had. it certainly had done him well in the past, hadn’t it? oh! but it might mean a false soulmate ---- and hasn’t he always deeply craved love? lips purse, and his head tilts slightly. “ though i did own some farmland. might i . . . be candid with you? ”

❝ So this is exciting! ❞ Smile stretches wide across Chidi’s face, fists briefly wagging in an expression of excitement in front of his own chest as he settles into the couch. The existence of soulmates is an incredibly interesting concept and one he’ll think about more later – but for right now, he’s simply excited about the prospect of it and what it means for him. By all accounts, this should be perfect.

whatever personal opinions monty has of himself ( and they are all rather favourable, of course ), he is almost certainly sure that he shouldn’t be here. not in the good place ---- this feels deserves, for his cunning and intelligence ---- but in this house, and with this person. talking about . . . human rights. as though he cared at all about such things! hands fold in his lap, and the smile on his lip is much to wide and forced to be natural. what sort of farce would place him with someone as dull as a professor?

“ traveled . . . yes. ” there’s a pause in that quiet voice, that seems to rise in pitch when overtaken by stress. “ though michael must be quite busy, you see, i ---- ” he leans in, conspiratorial, “ i never worked in human rights. ”
