He follows after, stopping at the stairs to greet each of them. "Hey, Princess. Your mom made something good for dinner." He smiles, nudging her along. "Everyone all cleaned up? You ready to eat?"
"Thanks Mom." Hina muttered softly, giving her mother a quick hug as she passed. It sucked that she couldn't pick driving up immediately...she could do everything else, why not this?
"Hina! How was school?" Kisa asked. "Your new uniform is so cute, do all the girls wear it?"
It's been a name with about four thousand names being thrown about as Yasha and Xi go through their weekly routine at the store. "I kind of like 'Shinzo'." Xi mutters quietly as he walks beside Yasha. "Shinzo or Ryuku....? Oh wait, you suggested Shinzo already." He tuts.
A hand settles down on his bump, giving a small reassurance to the baby who can't hear or understand them.
He settles his most recent craving down into the cart, some fat strawberries. He's certain Japan may start taxing him more for the amount of berries he's eating.
"Lenya is both Japanese and Russian...?"
"I like Lenya." They nodded in agreement. "Though...if we were thinking Russian I did have another suggestion if you're open to it?"
"Please? I really don't know that I have any boy names picked out." Xi laughs softly. "I feel like every name is a placeholder, and not actually the one we want to go with. What're your thoughts?" He looks down at some other berries. oOOOH. Cherries. He instantly feels a craving shift into place as he picks those up as well.
Yasha snorted, thankful that he was craving something healthy at least.
"Well...I was thinking Alexander. My mom stopped being able to have kids before they could name a daughter after my Baba Alexandra. So...I thought...if you wanted..."
Xi gasps as he looks up, slowly lowering the cherries beside the other fruits in the cart. It felt right. It felt like the satisfying click of pressing the right switch. They had it when they chose Ena and Aurora. "Baby, that's absolutely perfect!" He smiles, reaching over to gently wrap his arms around them. "Katsuki-Popovich Alexander! Oh! I love it!"
Yasha kissed the top of his head, happy that their husband was into the name they'd chosen. Unfortunately that happy moment was broken by their phone ringing obnoxiously with Xi's Olympic gold skate free program song.
"Ah shit, it's a client."
Of course, that ringtone. It's almost a jumpscare sometimes, but he does think it's cute that Yasha cherishes the day they proposed so much. "Oh!" He steps back and takes hold of the cart. "I'll get some more tea and pick up stuff for dinner, go ahead." He smiles and leans up to press a kiss to their cheek.
Xi steps away, letting Yasha take care of business.
Their finances hadn't taken a major hit when Yasha was out for two months, but some clients were a lot harder to get ahold of than others. They had to take calls whenever.
He wanders over to his least favorite area, where the meats were. The scent of the cleaner made his stomach turn, but they needed protein that wasn't just tofu and nuts. He picks up a few smaller packages of meat and bags them when a different scent hits him. He raises his head, only to make eye contact beside him with-.... His father.
Haru.
Haru blinks at him for a moment. "......Xiaoben." He acknowledges.
Xi doesn't even do that, he sets the chicken in his cart and looks away, walking straight for an aisle where he doesn't even need anything. "Wh-...Xiao! That-"
"I have nothing to say to you." He says, resisting the urge to protectively set a hand over his bump. Haru didn't need to know about any babies, he's not a grandfather. He's a sperm donor. "and don't call me Xiao."
He considered abandoning the cart and looking for Yasha immediately, but if this client call was important, they might lose it. Maybe he should call Georgi? Or Yuuri? "Xiaoben, I was only stopping to say I was surprised you were here, last time I saw you, you were-"
"Dying." He says, pretending to look over the shelf of bulk items he most certainly didn't need. "And you wanted to assure that by dumping frozen drinks on me in the middle of winter. You almost did it, by the way. If Yasha hadn't convinced my birth mom to donate a kidney, I would have been a goner. Poor Haru. Didn't get what he wanted."
"That not fair." He says with a glower. "You abandoned your father and you expected me to give you an organ without-"
"Even if I had a kid who was dying and they needed all the skin on my body, I'd give it." He says. "Now leave me be."
"Yep. Yep, absolutely. Nails at 9:30. I swear your nails grow like Bamboo Asagawa-san. I'm out at the moment, but I'll write it down and put it in the system when I get home. Alright? Of course. Hopefully you get that engagement ring." They laughed softly, writing it on the back of their grocery list. "I'll see you then." Once they hung up, they started looking for their husband.
Haru doesn't seem to be budging in Xi's peripheral. Fuck.
He doesn't want to give any more attention, he already feels his heart aching for the memories of how his father went from loving dad to bigot who would hit his own son. He can feel the lingering, and he turns to push his cart away, a bit further down the back towards the clearance shelves.
"Xiaoben."
"Nothing more to say to you."
"You're still with him, aren't you?"
"Yes, and we're happy and married. Now go away." He says, stopping when he realizes he's cornered himself. He can hear Haru with his cart nearby and a sigh leaves him. ".....Haven't you done enough shopping? Don't you have a different store elsewhere?"
"I have two now." He says. "and if you're willing to apologize, I'd be glad to make sure you-"
"APOLOGIZE?" Xi whips his head around, perhaps the pregnancy was making his emotions intense, but the fury that coursed through him felt like a fire that got dropped in a vat of gasoline. "I think it's high time that you apologized to the SON YOU BEAT AND ALMOST KILLED."
Bad vibe.
A chill went right up and down Yasha's spine, from the bond and from the sound of their Husband's voice. They sped round the corner, and the growl the came from their throat was immediate.
"GET AWAY FROM HIM!" They barked, happy to throw their weight around as an Alpha.
Haru jumped at the growl, and as he turned around, a flicker of recognition hit him. That kind of angry growl, that low voice that beat his ass five years ago. He steps back only momentarily.
"Calm yourself, we're talking." He says, brows furrowing. "Not that you have to introduce yourself to every conversation between my son-"
"I'm not your son." Xi says and reaches up to wipe his own eyes, so angry he's already tearing up. "I'm not your son in anything other than biology. At this point, you're just a sperm donor! I want nothing to do with you, and I will take great pleasure in never thinking about you again, so just let me leave."
"What? Was almost killing him once not enough? We got an apology from like...all your old friends, they know what you did now." Yasha smirked, trying to put themself between the two. "There's nothing left for you here. Even the building you inhabited is gone."
"What on earth does he mean?" Hari looks to Xi, almost like he was going to joke about it, but he's met with a firey look.
"THEY mean that we took your shop and we've demolished it."
He blinks and looks between them. "..... You-... You didn't-"
"We did, we bought it, we tore it down, and now it's ours. It's their shop, their spa." He didn't want to mention that they live there, he didn't want a visitor later.
Haru looks to Yasha, and his lip twitched in annoyance. "......Y.....You. None of this would have happened if it weren't for you!" He shoves his cart at them.
Fuck. Xi felt his heart drop, and he tries to stop it, "Don't you fucking da-" leaping forward to snag at the cart, only to meet an arm that swings viciously into his chest and knocks him back into the shelving of clearance items. A pain fills his back as the metal jabs against his skin, and the sounds of rattling above him break into a crash of various things that drop onto him.
"YOU." Haru points at Yasha, voice raising again. "YOU COULD HAVE LEFT HIM BE. WE COULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY!"
"Oh my god! Are you alright!?"
"Someone calm security before that man attacks the other one!"
"Honey, grab him!"
Yasha registered none of it. Their vision went red as they grabbed Haru by the collar, ready to fuck him up again if needed.
"Oh my god, he's bleeding from...! Call an ambulance!"
Wait...what? Their grip loosened on Haru.
Xi felt pain.
More than just his back. His lower abdomen was tense and aching. He felt it drip down his nose, he felt a heat down his legs, and sharpness that broke his heart.
Someone was hurrying to get the items off Xi, one shelf being lifted off his abdomen, and another off his shoulder as he tried to process the pain that stunned him to silence. His baby. His baby is hurting. He looks down to his light pants, noticing the red there, and a panic took over him.
Haru sees Yasha's eyes fall upon Xi, and he knows this is his chance. He swings, fist landing straight on their cheek. "YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED MONTHS AGO ON THAT STUPID BIKE."
"Fuck, Xi!" Yasha cried, then they felt the fist connect. They hardly cared between the storm in their head. "Wait...the car...that was you? You hate me that much?"
"Come here you!" A man grabbed Haru, restraining him from causing any more damage. "Kid, you ok?"
"I...no. No! Where's Xi! The...the baby..." Tears were streaming down their cheeks. They knew what thay much blood meant.
"Oh my god, he assaulted a pregnant Omega!"
"Someone call the police!"
Someone pulled Xi up, only for him to curl into himself back onto his knees with a wail at the pain in his stomach. He looked to Yasha, how the punch landed on them, and the pain tripled in his heart. His spouse and his baby both hurting at once sending his mind reeling.
"HEY!" Haru tugs one arm free, only for another patron to grab it again and push it behind his back. "THEY-;...." His eyes widen when he hears 'pregnant', his breath hitching when he sees the blood, sees Xi's tears. "....THEY... THEY RUINED ME, I-"
An employee reaches for Yasha to help them up as well. "We've got to get you two an ambulance, my boss is calling one now. SOMEONE TAKE THAT MAN AWAY!"
"Get him away from me before I do something I regret." Yasha huffed, panting as they held the area that hurt most.
Not their face. Their neck, their bond mark.
"Shit...shit shit shit." It was always bad when Xi bled, no matter the cause. "I need you to stay awake, ok? Stay with me."
Xi was hyperventilating, looking to Yasha with red eyes as he grips at his middle and hugs it tight, like he could hold the baby there, like he could stop this all from even happening.
"Y-You..." He manages one or two words as he tries not to completely lose himself. "Y-your... you got p... you got punched.." He hiccups.
"A cheap shot." They laughed, holding him close. "I'm more worried about you but...but you'll be fine. You'll both be fine."
"H-He's not-" He hiccups, not sure what he's even talking about. "G-Get him away-weca..." He looks down again at the blood beneath him, and a cold feeling fills him.
This isn't happening.
This is a vivid pregnancy nightmare.
If it wasn't real, it wouldn't hurt so bad, would it?
"Sir!" One employee calls. "I hear the ambulance, let me help you bring him out, okay?"
"Don't!" Yasha growled, before realising the person was only trying to help, a Beta. This wasn't her fault. "I'm sorry...Please help...."
The two of them managed to get Xi outside and onto the waiting bed, then the two of them were hurried off.
They flinch, but slowly approach to scoop under Xi's other arm to help him rise up. He winces and cries softly at the ache again. "B-Becarefulbe...be-he's just a ..." He hiccups, his eyes burning with tears as he's helped towards the store.
He's being paraded out in his bloodied mess, why was there so much of it? It couldn't be. It couldn't be the end of this.
Alexander was only just named.
The ambulance is halted out front, and the medics come forward to help lower him onto the gurney. "How many weeks?" One woman asks. "How many weeks pregnant is he?"
"T...Twe...." Hiccuping, Xi looks up to her. "S-Save him, please, tw..w.twenty weeeks-"
The two paramedics shared a dark look that Yasha didn't like.
"Please...please help him." Yasha whispered, denying what they knew was true.
"Legs get to the hospital. For now...well...let's get some ice on that cheek."
Suddenly...Yasha just hoped that Hina was one a home study day...
He hasn’t lost so much blood, but he didn’t see the look they gave each other. This is it, he lost his son. All because he didn’t ignore his father. He shouldn’t have said a word to him, he shouldn’t even be telling him to leave their family alone. He should’ve just walked away. But instead, he just had to say something. Another sob leaves him as he looks to Yasha, and the words are sobbed out. “I-I’m so sorry…!”
"No no no, it's not your fault." They sobbed. "Holding Xi's hand. "But i promise, I'm gonna make sure that dirtbag spends the rest of his shitty life behind fucking bars."
“I-I shouldn’t have-… it’s all my f-fault..” he whimpers out, wincing at the sharp pain along his abdomen. It felt like the false labor pains, almost tauntingly similar. He quakes as he cries. He can see the spots in his vision as he tries to apologize further, but his head was getting woozy. He leans his head back to the pillow, eyes starting to unfocus.
“It’s alright sir, we’re almost there.” The medic says as she points ahead. “Stay with us, let’s get you inside and the obstetrics department will take care of you.”
"No! No no no! Come on baby, stay with us, ok?" Yasha sobbed, squeezing his hand. "Please."
Oh god...was if that was it for both of them? Could they raise twin girls on their own? No...don't think like that.
