NOTHING CAREFULLY CONCEALED THAT WON’T BE REVEALED!
Proverbs 3:34 Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble.
Rank hypocrisy! It all starts with a simple act of devotion and appreciation then it is emulated producing an outward sign thoughtlessly repeating convincing others and ourselves our sins are removed.
Sins show that it is the circus; we’re all looking for redemption with or without God! People hate hypocrisy worse than walking on a hot bed of fiery coals, hypocrites love to make a show of walking on a bed of hot coals but they are still sinners or they wouldn’t be walking on them in the first place.
James 4:6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."{Proverbs 3:34}
Making a show of outward righteousness is the greatest sin of all, it is the golden calf of human pride, the apex in denying God while worshiping the creature rather than the creator. Thinking there is a universal truth in human sin that transcends God, spot on! That is exactly what the Devil told Eve!
Your point about outward righteousness becoming a "golden calf" of human pride highlights how easily devotion can degrade into performance. When the public display of a ritual matters more than internal truth, it shifts from serving God to serving the ego. This exact dynamic—where the creature is worshiped instead of the Creator—is a central warning across spiritual and philosophical history.
"There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known."
This timeless truth from Luke 12:2 perfectly captures the inevitable end of all hypocrisy. In this passage, Jesus directly warns His disciples to beware of the "yeast of the Pharisees," which He explicitly defines as hypocrisy.
The Evolution of Performative Righteousness
Habitual Emulation: What begins as a genuine, heartfelt act of devotion is observed by others and copied. Over time, the internal meaning fades, leaving only an empty, thoughtless outward sign.
The Illusion of Absolution: Mechanically repeating these signs can trick both the observer and the practitioner into believing true transformation or forgiveness has occurred, masking unchanged behavior.
The Pride Trap: Making a public spectacle of moral purity or suffering (like "walking on coals") often feeds self-righteousness, transforming a tool for humility into an instrument of pride.
Theological and Philosophical Parallels
The Original Deception: Your connection to the Garden of Eden reflects the ultimate theological definition of pride: human beings attempting to define truth, sin, and righteousness on their own terms, independent of God.
The Secular Search for Redemption: The secular drive to seek redemption without God aligns with existential philosophy, which notes that humans constantly seek validation and absolution from society when they lack a spiritual anchor.
Biblical Critiques of Performance: This critique closely mirrors historical rebukes of legalism, where individuals strictly follow outward religious laws while completely missing the internal spirit of justice, mercy, and humility.
