Genuine question: is it possible to be resistant to addiction? Like, genetically or something?

I had a first cigarette five years ago and since then I smoked occasionally if offered. Never buy it for myself (i borrow from people until i owe them a pack and buy them a whole thing) but I've had weekends where I'd go through three packs and also weeks to months periods without a single one

I was told I sound like an addict so for the whole of May I stopped smoking entirely and it was. Really easy? I can't remember a single time where I'd genuinely crave one? Smoking gives me the same feeling as snacking on pocket candy, i think it's more an oral fixation than anything but I really don't know if it's supposed to be this easy

We have a history of heavy smokers and drinkers on one side of the family and then people who never did either on the other so idk if that means anything

From my knowledge, a little bit of something on rare occasions makes you less likely to become addicted.

so if parents refused to let their child eat sugar ever until they turn 18 and move out, the child will become hopelessly addicted to sugar and won't have any regulation abilities

but if they got candy like once a year on their birthday, they would be less likely to be addicted to sugar

same thing with cigarettes and alcohol, if you have it occasionally, you're less likely to become addicted to it when you finally have free access

Yknow. I don't think people are reading into Simon's title of "the butcher" enough.

Butchers are not inherently evil, aside from all the slashers and serial killers who adopt the name because "guy with lots of knives that chops things up." But their job, their purpose in the village is to provide. Others may not be strong enough to cut through the thick meat or bones of the animal — they may not be smart enough to cut the meat properly.

A butcher has to be placed outside of the regular town because the smell of viscera, of blood, is too much for the common person to bare. But still, the village will turn to the butcher to feed them. To give them the thing they need to survive but they are not capable — or not willing to do themselves.

Simon is the exact same. All he wants to do is help. He is pushed outside of the village, into the blood ocean, to do a job that others are not willing or capable to do. He's necessary for their survival, but he's still never going to be allowed back into the village. Because the scent of blood is too strong for the simple village folk.

But even though he'll never be allowed back. Even if he's mistreated and mislabeled by the community. He still gives his everything for it.

As he hears the voices of past sacrificial lambs in his ear screaming at him, begging him to just let go and let the village that uses him and never appreciates him to just die, he is thinking about the survival of the people.

Because a butcher's job will always be to provide.

Also: a little unrelated but considering the fact that so many people died in the quiet rapture, and how agriculture and other food production likely failed at some point, and Eden being a death cult (?) and Iron Lung’s general vibe (human blood), it wouldn’t surprise me if part of being “the Butcher” also means literally being the butcher. And there’s not much meat left after the end, is there?

i like to imagine that Hollow was entirely Mute, even though a vessel could have the potential to talk.

However, after the infection and containing the Radiance for so many years, when they are finally freed from her control and allowed to exist. They can speak. But it is with a voice that if heard would send mass panic through the kingdom once more. Because lingering within their shell is the voice of a dead goddess, the one who brought the kingdom to ruin simply because another shone brighter

Hollow can speak, but it will always be with her voice. And they hate it.
