The ending we all deserve

there are many problems with the film adaptations of how to train your dragon but i think the worst one was the decision to make the dragons voiceless. 

I understand having the dragons speaking a entirely separate language and the possibility of constant dragonese subtitles would have been very hard to pull off, but I feel that the consequences are pretty damaging for the story and the overarching themes.

the dragons are basically reduced from intelligent beings with plenty of agency to dumb beasts, and although some are still ‘intelligent’, it’s in the way a dog or a horse might be intelligent. along with the fact that it means dragons and humans can’t communicate on any sort of high level, it also cheapens the core message of the series into something like “don’t keep animals in cages”. this is a perfectly fine theme and a really good message, but compare it to the core message of the books, which is basically “don’t keep slaves” - specifically don’t keep any kind of slaves, whether it’s dragon or human. this is an immensely more powerful message.

that being said, the films are perfectly fine to enjoy on their own. I just find it hard not to compare them when i’m such a huge fan of the books and the films seem so much more popular.
