Celine leaned against the wall, contemplating how to answer Henry’s question. No place had ever been like home for her, which is why coming back to the Chicago area was so easy to begin with. Everyone she loved was here, and that’s why it would be her top spot. But with his stipulations, she just shrugged, her eyes trained on him intently. “I would have to say Portland. It’s busy but not too busy, and it’s so easy to get away to the country if you need some space. I was at peace there.”

“Portland. I will definitely add that to my travel list then,” he smiled over to her and nodded. “Not that I think it’s going to have anything on Chicago, but... If you liked it, then I sure as hell will like it. Plus, having some country nearby to get away to sounds better than being cooped up in the smoggy air of the city all the time.” When the elevator doors reopened, he gestured for her to get out first.

“No way! Thank you. You are a life saver!” he took as many quarters as he would need to wash and dry his clothes, stuffing them in his pocket as he opened up the next washer, moving his clothes over. “Seriously, I’ll pay you back. Or bring you a danish or something.”

Henry smiled as the other took the coins he needed then deposited the coins into his own machine. “Hey, really, it’s no problem. I always bring extra in case anyone needs help.”

Thomas just laughed and shook his head. “I mean maybe. Though I am pretty sure he wasn’t really interested. I don’t even know if I am interested. Not like in guys, but him in particular. Actually in guys. I mean like I’ve thought about it before. But like never really thought about it. Like I am probably pansexual when it boils down to it. Because I don’t think gender even matters to me. But I do know… I like Alice. a lot.’

He listened as Thomas rambled on and on. It was almost like a whirlwind. His best friend was trusting him with this information. With the fact that he also liked guys and that he was pan, so why couldn’t he trust Thomas? Of course he trusted Thomas. After his friend concluded, he spoke, “It’s great that you’re figuring yourself out and that you know your feelings for Alice for certain. I mean, you could end up with a girl, guy, someone nonbinary, and that’d be wonderful. Not that I’m not rooting for you and Alice though because you two are adorable. I mean, I don’t even know who I like because I’m gay.” It slipped out, but it felt like instant relief even as he said it. However, he still looked to his friend with an uncertain fear in his eyes.

Celine simply smiled at Henry, nodding to acknowledge that she’d heard him. But, as he asked about her adventures, she could feel her cheeks begin to burn. Sighing, she looked back over at her friend, the story already in her head. “When I left, I first found myself in Austin, Texas. Why? Who the fuck knows; but it was big and it was Southern, and I wanted to experience life, I guess. After that…I’m pretty sure I made my way to New Orleans. Party time, y’know?” Celine paused, biting at her lip. “And then I went to San Diego, followed by Los Angeles…ended up in Portland after that. And…now I’m back here.”

When the elevator doors opened, he led her inside,listening all the while as she described her adventures. Honestly, Henry could only dream of getting to actually live in places like that. Maybe if his father’s business expanded, he could take over one of those branches. “Alright, so if I can ask, which was your favorite city to live in then, hm? And you can’t say Chicago. That’s not allowed.”

Stepping out the apartment, Celine gave a gentle sigh. She didn’t know why it had taken her so long to get to him, but she wanted to kick herself for it. Apart from Gus, Henry was the person she felt closest to, and she was happy to be around him once more. “I work in a pub and eat wings on the daily, and I still can’t ever get enough.”

“Eat wings on the daily? I could only imagine. I basically live off of sandwiches I make at home and take to work,” he joked as they walked up to the elevator and he pressed the down button. “Okay, but tell me more about your adventures before you moved back here since you were successfully able to get away.”

The blonde frowned, reaching out to set a hand gently on Henry’s shoulder. They’d been friends for so long that she hardly had a hard time being affectionate with him. In fact, he was the only person she was ever affectionate with. “Yeah, I’m ready to go. Ready to go punch your dad in the balls a few times.” She sighed and pulled her arm back, moving towards the door anyway. “Just kidding, I’m starving and want wings.”

He gave her a look when she mentioned going to his dad, and he shook his head, “Not today, but maybe another day.” Henry led her over to the door and opened it, “Oh, same. Especially after my Bowie dinner disaster, wings would be heavenly right now.”

Oscar whipped around when he heard Henry, blanching. “i’m sorry! I didn’t realize anyone was in here.” he blushed, scratching the back of his head “Do you mind? I can pay you back, I’m just fresh out of quarters and I promised my sisters I’d do the laundry this week…”

After he finished setting his basket down at a washer, Henry pulled out a few rolls of quarters that he always had prepped for laundry day. “Dude, you’re completely good. This is, like, less than a dollar.” He tore one open and held out the lot, “Take what you need.”

Thomas shook his head with a little bit of a laugh. “I mean, a lot of people wouldn’t want to flirt with me dude. I honestly don’t think he put two and two together on who I was. Guys also don’t typically flirt with me. But it wasn’t bad. Like he’s cute. If Alice wasn’t still on my mind… maybe?” 

Guys also don’t typically flirt with me, so it wasn’t normal enough for Thomas for him to say something. Instead, Henry just laughed and nodded, “Hey, so there you go. You’ve got yourself a plan B in case Alice goes back to her ghost town.”

Plopping down to sit on the floor, Celine allowed the dog to climb into her lap, scratching behind his ears happily as she nodded. “Exactly where we used to go after school. They’re the best wings in town. You think I’m gonna go anywhere else?” She kissed at the dog’s nose as Henry disappeared, burying her face in his fur. She’d always wanted a dog, but her schedule didn’t allow for much time. Celine sighed at this thought, grinning as Henry came back out. Allowing Bowie to get out of her lap, she stood and brushed the hair from her shirt. “There’s the Henry I know and love.”

He walked to where she and the dog were, giving Bowie a good head rub before looking back to her, “Yes, well, you know my dad doesn’t exactly love this Henry... Or know this Henry for that matter.” He sighed and glanced back to where his work clothes were on the bed. “But, I live on my own now, so that means nobody gets to criticize my look before I can walk through the door. Ready to go?”

The blonde grinned happily at the dog before she looked up at Henry again, a curt laugh leaving her lips. “As hot as the half-buttoned look is, my game plan is to go get some dang buffalo wings, and I don’t want you getting that all over your clothes.” Celine stood up straight, pulling her medium-length hair up into a ponytail, as if to make a point. “C’mon. Be a normal human being with me.”

Henry rolled his eyes at the comment on his outfit before he held up a hand. “Fine, fine, entertain Bowie, and I’ll go change into being a normal human. It’s just wings, right? Where we used to go after school?” He asked as he walked into his bedroom and grabbed out a t-shirt and jeans and even a ball cap before changing and coming back out to her. A quick change.

“yeah I mean she has really come far from little Sansa.” He grinned and rubbed his face slightly. “Though I think that she has a lot growing still too.” He tapped his chin in thought for a moment before throwing his hand on Henry’s leg. “OH I remember something that happened! Marie’s boyfriend person. You know him right? Kris. Well his brother semi flirted with me the other day. I may or may not have flirted back. It just caught me off guard.”

The hand on his leg made Henry jolt for a second, but mainly from the unexpected nature of it. “Yeah, yeah, I know Kris!” Henry nodded, but then as Thomas described the situation, his face grew a little confused. He was being so casual about it, but Henry knew he... couldn’t be. “I... That’s great, Thomas. I mean, you’re a good looking guy. Who wouldn’t want to flirt with you?”

The blonde followed Henry over to where the dog was, smiling at his sweet face as she reached out to pet him. “Beagles are the best, though. Isn’t that right, Bowie?” Celine squatted down beside Bowie, scratching behind his ears before she peered back up at Henry. “Hey…why don’t we go get some food? We can eat, we can catch up, we can pretend the weather isn’t trying to kill us all. It’ll be fun!”

As soon as she reached behind his ear to scratch, Bowie’s foot started to thump against the floorboards. An extremely spoiled and blessed pup. “Oh, yeah, we can totally do all that. Let me just get changed out of my work clothes because... I hope we’re not going somewhere that expects us to be business casual? Warn me now if we are.”

Down in the laundry room, Oscar was putting coins in a dryer carefully, knowing how testy these machines could get. Once they were all in and everything looked good, he pressed the start button. And nothing happened. Then again. And again. Groaning, he kicked the machine with his foot. “You’re useless, y’know that? This is why I never do laundry.” he said to the dryer, pulling what quarters he had left out of his pocket and counting them on top of the dryer. “Crap!”

Henry had been walking in with laundry basket in hand while this entire display happened. Wincing as the younger kicked the machine and starting on loading in his clothes, he commented, “That dryer usually has an out of service sign on it, so... It looks like it needs that back. Need someone to spot you change so you can move to the next one?”
