Nobody prepared me for this one…
Socialist Jews and Arabs on a May Day march in Ramle, 1949, with banners in Yiddish and Arabic. Top Yiddish banner reads, “Work and Bread for Ramle Unemployed.” The Arabic sign on the top right reads: “We demand the release of the detained trade unionists and democrats. We demand the reunion of separated Arab families, the return of refugees, and the end of military restrictions and racism.”
The bottom Yiddish one says, “Down with social democrat parties, servants of imperialism.” I don’t know what the Arabic says.
Source
The Arabic banner on the left says,
WE DEMAND The unity of the international working class In Israel For the sake of brotherhood in peace and national equality And the right to work for every worker and land for every peasant
The one on the right is harder to read because of the folding and the size, but the big word in the middle is REFUGEES and around the bottom it says something about racial discrimination.
Beautiful.
