My journey
I have been the chubby one all my life. I wouldn’t say I was obese (contrary to what my wii fit used to call me) but I definitely wasn’t healthy. I didn’t exercise if I could help it. I went to sleep at 3am and woke up at midday. I would let myself wallow in my self pity with my good friends chocolate and ice cream.
But recently my mother allowed me to finally get my own puppy. Meanwhile I’m 20 so it wasn’t that I had to get her to buy it more so if she would allow me to have it in the house.
My beautiful baby German shepherd who is now 8 months has changed my life in ways I never knew he would.
For the last 6 months I have walked him twice a day with constant play and woke up early and went to sleep at a reasonable time because that’s what a good parent does. They become their best selves to make sure the one who depends on them has the best care possible.
And in that 6 months I have lost 10kg.
To be honest the number doesn’t matter much. It is normally just the evidence in my head for those who didn’t see me before I started exercising. I feel more confident in my own skin than I ever have. I actually have a proper waist and my stomach is getting smaller and I have some muscle in my legs now.
The safety blanket of actually working for my body has opened me up in ways I didn’t expect also. Gone is the anxious shy little girl who couldn’t even call a restaurant for food. Now I’m making friends with other dog owners and I even meet up with someone so that my dog can play with her dogs.
I’m fixing past friendships that were broken because I didn’t have the confidence to make them last.
A dog has encouraged me to become the real me and I couldn’t be happier.
Life may tend to not be like romance novels but if one comes knocking I’m gonna be damn sure I’m not the annoying best friend in it.
