Javiera has always had trouble connecting with people.
He is quiet, dry, direct, and very contained. He is not cruel, and he is not emotionless, but he does not always know how to show what he feels in the way other people expect. Because of that, when he was younger, a lot of people saw him as weird, cold, or difficult to approach.
During school, Javiera was bullied. For a long time, he did not defend himself. Not because he thought what was happening was okay, but because he was afraid that things would get worse if he reacted. So he stayed quiet, endured it, and kept everything inside.
But one day he got tired of it.
Javiera finally snapped and beat up one of the boys who had been bullying him, leaving his face bloody. A classmate saw what happened and told the school inspector, so both Javiera and the other boy were punished.
When his parents found out, his mother told him that violence was not the best way to deal with the situation. His father understood him a little more, but told him that next time he should try not to go too far.
Javiera did not think he had gone too far.
He did not regret defending himself. In his mind, the other boy deserved it. That was the first time Javiera realized something dangerous about himself: violence made him feel in control. It felt like a way to punish people who crossed a line.
The next day, the boy came back with three friends and they all attacked Javiera. He tried to fight back, but it was four against one, so he received more hits than he could give. If a teacher had not passed by, he probably would have ended up much worse.
Before leaving, the boy told him that it was not over.
But he never came back to fight Javiera again.
That same day, the boy was assaulted outside of school, and because he refused to give up his things, the criminal killed him.
When Javiera and the rest of the school found out, Javiera did not feel sad. He did not feel guilty either, because he had not caused it. What he felt was colder than that. To him, it felt like a problem had disappeared.
The boy’s friends never bothered Javiera again, because they only did it when that boy pushed them to.
That event left something dark in Javiera’s mind. It made him believe that some people disappearing from your life can feel like relief. It did not make him chaotic or reckless, but it did make him colder about violence and consequences.
Later, a new boy arrived at school. He was also lonely and did not fit in very well, so he noticed Javiera and approached him. They slowly became friends.
For a while, they only had each other. The rest of their classmates still excluded them, but it mattered less because they were no longer completely alone.
Sometimes people bothered the new boy too, and Javiera defended him. Because of that, the boy started to admire Javiera, and eventually he fell in love with him.
At that time, Javiera was not completely sure about his orientation, but that did not matter much to him. He only knew that he also liked that boy, trusted him, and thought maybe a relationship could work.
But the relationship did not last very long.
The boy was very affectionate and sensitive. He needed Javiera to say sweet things often, to express his feelings more, and to be less dry. Javiera cared about him, but his way of loving was quieter. He showed affection by staying, protecting, paying attention, and being present, not by constantly saying romantic things.
Eventually, the boy told Javiera that he preferred for them to go back to being friends.
Javiera accepted because he knew the boy was not really happy, but the rejection still hurt. He was not deeply in love with him, but he had believed that maybe this person could understand him.
After that, their friendship was never the same. The boy later changed schools, and Javiera was alone again.
That experience made Javiera even more closed off. He learned that even people who liked him could leave if he was not sweet enough, expressive enough, or easy enough to love.
Years later, when Javiera became involved with Helen and Liu, things felt different.
With them, Javiera did not feel like he had to pretend to be softer, more social, more affectionate, or more normal. Helen and Liu were also damaged in their own ways. They understood violence, anger, trauma, desire, guilt, and the need to belong somewhere, even if that place was not healthy or normal.
Helen does not demand constant sweetness from Javiera. He can understand his silence, his dry way of speaking, and the way he shows love without always saying it out loud.
Liu connects with Javiera’s protective side, his loyalty, and the way he loves by staying. Liu understands pain and anger in a way that makes Javiera feel less alone.
That is why Javiera loves them unconditionally.
Not because he thinks Helen and Liu are perfect. They are not. They are damaged, dangerous, and not exactly sane. But they accepted him completely. They did not ask him to become someone else. They included him in their world, even with all of its darkness.
For Javiera, that means everything.
After being excluded, misunderstood, and left behind, Helen and Liu became the first people who truly felt like home.
That is also why Javiera would kill for them.
He would not do it as a dramatic romantic gesture, and he would not do it just to show off. If someone threatened Helen or Liu, Javiera would see it as a threat against the only place where he has ever felt accepted. He would act coldly, directly, and without much hesitation.
His morality is not based on the law or on what other people consider right. It is based on loyalty, protection, and punishment.
He may seem controlled and quiet, but with Helen and Liu he can be much more intense, vulnerable, and open than people expect, because with them he feels safe, wanted, and accepted.
