it's all very well to say "friends are just as important as romantic partners" but in practice this simply is not the case lmao. you can share a flat with a friend but it's expected that sooner or later that friend will meet someone and will move out to go live with that person instead. if you're hanging out with friends you can bring your partner along but your friends can't come on a date night with you because that's third-wheeling and it's weird. you can know somebody for most of your life and still be second-best to some guy they met on tinder 6 months ago. you're meant to just accept without question the fact that your friends will prioritise time with their partners over time with you. being single is treated like a problem that needs to be fixed. we casually use expressions like "just friends" or "more than friends". everything we read and watch reinforces the idea that romantic love is what gives life meaning and therefore your life is meaningless without it. i try to keep my chin up but my god it is bleak out there

As an aroace person, I guess I have the typical aroace experience but sort of in reverse? Toward most other people in the community themselves?

'Cuz I never have thoughts along the line of "everyone feel the same and are just being dramatic about romance/sex" or "thought romance/sex as on screen was just a fake thing people like being dramatic about" or even "everyone's just doing this whole romance/sex because solely of social expectation and nobody actually like it"

And just, I was much more surprise that most other aroace people (as far as I can see) thought like that. What do you mean you thought everyone felt the same way as you? Like I get it, noone want to be an outcast or feel like they're broken but how did you get to the conclusion that everyone feel the same?

I've never felt broken either, I just thought about it like I would about eating vegetables. I don't like vegetables, I don't want them in my food. But other people do, and I'm fully aware that people actually like eating food with greens in them. My preferences never influence how I thought other people act or think.

It's just... kinda surprising for me. I've mainly seen two extremes of the aroace experience on here: feeling broken, different and isolated from other people or genuinely thinking that everyone feel the same way and is just pretending to like romance and sex for shits and giggles.

Where's the ones inbetween???? People who just think "eh, maybe I'm built different" and goes on as best they can with their life whether society is bothering them about the topic or not.
