FATHERHOOD
(ficlet beneath the cut!)
Somehow, Inuyasha had managed. Somehow, Kagome had worked through her studies, graduated, and made it back to him.
Things settled back smoothly into their old routine. Bickering, fighting, comforting, and secrets whispered to each other in the fire light.
They were in bliss. Stolen looks, slight flirtations, soft touches when no one saw. Their hearts raced to a beat of their own drum.
Inuyasha and Kagome loved each other. There was no question in anyone’s minds about that. So they took their time in getting to know each other again. And so they found, in the three years that had passed, the core of who they really were, were still the same.
Kagome’s eyes still sparkled with a kindness so deep it made Inuyasha’s heart skip. And Inuyasha was still so passionate about protecting her and taking care of her, that Kagome thought her face would self combust.
It finally took six months for them to push their relationship deeper, to something they had craved for years. Inuyasha’s nose twitched as Kagome murmured, “let’s go somewhere kind, and passionate.” Then her scent changed, and his eyes dialated at the sudden sweet spice that curled around him.
Kaede made a swift escape while she bruised their delicate egos, declaring them to find a home of their own. And nine months later, Moroha was born.
It was damn difficult. Inuyasha was nowhere near prepared. Every three to four hours the demon of a child would wake up with a screeching so harsh his ears would ring for days. Kagome, the ever dutiful mother, would crawl from their futon and care for the newborn, letting her suckle the life from her as she nearly passed out from exhaustion. Inuyasha would always be there in a second’s time to gather them in his arms, giving them the support to go on another day.
Kids, Inuyasha decided, were gross. Moroha puked, her shits reeked, and she constantly drooled all over him. Why was she always trying to eat dirt?! Why did she find his subjugation beads so fascinating and perfect to stick in her gums?! And damn why was her grip so strong?! She nearly pulled all the hairs from his silver forelocks in one tug!
In the beginning, he didn’t mind. The moment she was born, something inside him swelled, a love and protection even deeper than what he felt for Kagome consumed him. He knew that no matter what happened, he would protect them both completely with his life. And then the burping and drooling began.
Sure he was annoyed. He needed to bathe and clean his robes more than he wanted to. He made a big hoopla about not wanting any more kids. But at the end of the day, no matter how exhausted he found himself, he had the love of his life with him. Kagome always sweetly tucked in his arms, her scent undulating around their home after the delicious smell of roasted meat was long gone. And between them, their precious little miracle of love; Moroha. A life, a person, their child, someone he had never even dared to dream of having nestled protectively with them.
Both parents were completely and utterly exhausted. But, as Inuyasha watched the two biggest loves of his life drifting to sleep, he knew deep in his gut, his heart wanted to feed life into more children, more little ones he and Kagome could love and call their own.
Life was a gift, he decided. Emotions swelled as he rubbed his wrist on his suddenly moist eyes and took in their unique scents.
