Competing* Together with Fans
In Japan of course, and also overseas, there is an almost-shockingly huge number of Hanyu fans. At the venue, there are many of them, solidly conveying their support to Hanyu in all sorts of ways. “The support from everyone, it is happiness and it is also pressure. I feel that fans are together with me going into battle (*or competition).” Hanyu said this at the press meeting the day after. (t/n. Worlds 2019)
“Through the TV or at the venue, I want to treat everyone equally as much as possible, and so I conduct myself in that way, and because of that, the sense of distance between fans and me is not that close. But even then, this time again, when I landed the loop jump, everyone rejoiced together for me. That feeling of ‘together’, it was really very strong this time.”
Then later, at the small medal ceremony held in front of fans, he said with his head lowered, “I think I will still be making all of you worry about me, but if you will fight* together with me, I will be happy.” And fans answered him with loud applause and cheers.
*Translation note: the verb 闘う has the meanings of: compete, fight, battle, struggle (against adversity/hardship).
