Well.. what can I say? this amazing woman has been a queen ever since her exit out the womb. Even with her career flourishing, she never stopped her love and care for the family she had back at home. Erica Abi Malik (aka, Erykah Badu) is a grammy winning singer, songwriter, activist, actress, you name it, she’s done it. After a year absence of my father, it left my mother distraught for a while. Around that same year, she found out the hard way the reason for her then boyfriend leaving his two favorite girls for dirt — living a double lifestyle. He promised to pop the big question to my mother but, someone on the other side of the love triangle beat her to it. My mother’s first instinct was to give up on her career forever due to a broken heart. But being the strong woman that she was her decision was to make a few changes. One of those changes being sending me over to Phillips Academy. In my freshman year at my first high school (around the time I heard the news of my father’s dirty work) I slacked off the first couple of days. Getting into numerous arguments and one fight had my mother realize I needed a change myself. She knew by me attending Phillips Academy I would get a chance to explore the world and take my mind off of the b- negativity. Once again though, I thank her for that because it only made us even closer.
