of course this happens to HER of all people —- and it’s not as if her neighbors don’t hate her ass enough. really, ransom had a bad feeling ever since she clocked out of the bar. driving home went smoothly, so did going into the house - but, like clockwork, she forgot her purse in the passenger. unlike clockwork, she forgot to unlock the door before she closed it again. lo and behold, when she went to go back into her townhouse apartment, it was locked. her keys? on the counter. her outfit? a simple hoodie over underwear. and really, she’s swallowing her pride here. there’s a knock on the door — twice, again, a little louder. she nearly sighs a breath of relief when it OPENS. “hi — i need some help, but like, you’ve got to promise not to laugh or call me a colossal dumbass.”
as the end of the school year neared, it wasn’t unusual for elia to be up this late. while everyone had their lights out and were passed out in bed, she was on her third cup of coffee and wide awake. she had two weeks worth of classes to catch up on before her test next week and she was determined to power through all of it in one night. she’s done it before but she’s never had an 8am class the next day. she was definitely going to regret this tomorrow. over the soft sounds of music coming from her laptop, she heard a knock on her door and then another. she debated answering it but she figured anyone knocking at this time of night must have an important reason to. she slowly opens her door, peeking through the small slit to find the cute girl next door standing in front of her. “what is it?” her eyes travel down the other’s body, examining the other’s outfit with a slight smile on her face. "did you forget to put on pants?” she teases, opening her door wider to reveal a similar outfit, but with an over sized t-shirt that stopped just above her knees.

jaime hated that it had come to this. they used to be so in love; she wasn’t sure that she could ever stop loving him, but things had changed. neither of them could deny that. maybe they weren’t the same people they were when they got married, or maybe they had outgrown each other, but something was off. they had come to the conclusion that it couldn’t be fixed, and that their marriage was a lost cause. despite that, they still found themselves tangled up in each other’s sheets, acting much more like lovers than soon-to-be-divorcees. she had been resisting the urge to ask what she was to him, but the divorce papers answered that question better than he could’ve. his future ex-wife. “i think we should wait the week,” she replied, sliding the papers back in his direction. she couldn’t even look at them right now, let alone sign them. divorcing seemed like the right thing to do a few months ago but there were other factors to consider now, starting with the fact that they were still sleeping together, and ending with the fact that they were now expecting a baby together. she hadn’t told him that last part yet; it was news to her as well, from as early as this morning. “in the meantime, there’s somethin’ else we need to talk about.”
aiden had come over to the house they shared at least once a week after him and jaime decided to file for divorce. initially, it was to pick up the boxes he had left behind while moving out of the apartment but as his visits became more frequent, the line between them, that was created by endless fighting and making up, started to blur. with the house cleared of his things, their divorce felt more and more real. they were actually doing this. it was difficult for aiden to believe that this was once a home that they had created together, one that they believed would be their home for the rest of their lives. he would never admit it but getting back into bed with jaime was his last attempt at holding onto something they both agreed wasn’t there anymore. part of him was starting to believe that they were okay, that they could make it through this but these divorce papers brought aiden back to reality. it brought him back to the constant fighting and the lack of time spent together. this was the right thing to do and he thought jaime believed that too, so the surprise on his face couldn’t easily be hidden when she suggested that they wait the week. “what? why? they’re already here. i’m already here.” aiden didn’t understand why they needed to wait. could jaime be changing her mind? “what else would we need to talk about?”

aiden never thought this day would come. it felt as though it was just yesterday he was watching jaime walk down the aisle, his whole body itching to say the words ‘i do’ so that he could officially be married to the love of his life. fast forward to three years later, he was standing in front of her, divorce papers in his hand ready to serve them to her. it had been a mutual decision, one they had talked a couple of months ago, but it wasn’t an easy one-- clearly, as aiden still often found himself coming back to jaime’s and waking up in the same bed the next morning. it was probably an unhealthy pattern to get stuck in but aiden couldn’t help but come back. he had gotten so used to it that he had almost forgotten about the divorce papers until his lawyer had called him that morning to pick them up. they felt heavy in his hands, as if he was carrying a ton of bricks, so it was a relief to finally set them down in front of jaime but that only lasted a second before that heaviness shifted to his chest. “we have a week to get it signed, but i figured we might as well do them today. i was already in the area anyway.” he felt his heart drop to his stomach as his eyes met jaime’s.
