Dutton Cemetery, Dutton, South Australia.

Nestled in the Mid Murray region of South Australia, Dutton Cemetery, formally known as St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, serves as a poignant testament to the German Lutheran settlers who shaped the area in the 19th century.

Established alongside the church at 20 Rice Street, the cemetery reflects the rhythms of a close knit farming community rooted in faith, resilience, and tradition.

Many of the earliest burials date back to the mid to late 1800s, with surnames like Appelt, Doering, Dohnt, Falkenberg, and Fielke appearing frequently, families whose descendants often remained in the region for generations.

The headstones, some modest and others ornately carved, speak to a time when craftsmanship and scripture intertwined to honor the departed.

Though small in scale, Dutton Cemetery holds over 100 memorials, most carefully photographed and transcribed by volunteers. It remains a vital resource for family historians and a quiet place of reflection for locals and visitors alike.

This cemetery is the final resting place for many of the town's German pioneer families and their descendants, bearing historic family names such as Baumgurtel, Boerth, Fox, Dohnt, and Gerhardy, among many others.

The presence of these pioneer names provides a physical connection to Lobethal's foundation and development, which was settled by German Lutheran immigrants arriving on the Skjold in 1841.

Today, the cemetery continues to be used and serves as a valuable historical record of the community's evolution.

The older Lutheran church precinct retains the remnants of the Old Lutheran Cemetery, which now falls within the Lutheran School Oval, with some headstones relocated and preserved.
