Halstead was happy he didn’t have a 9-5 job. Sure, he still had to write by certain deadlines, but nothing that kept him away from any of his partners. It was never his intent to have multiple. When Matthew said he had a day planned, he was happily on his way over. To hear his boyfriend was doing better was a great relief.
When he got there it turned out to be quite the opposite and he was dragging him into the ER to get something situated so he’d get better. He didn’t mind. He had a notebook and pen at hand, a vending machine not too far away, and of course he was still spending the day with Matthew.
“What? Nah it’ fine.” He kissed his cheek. Sitting down with food in hand, he took a bite, looking over at his boyfriend. “Did I? I don’t recall.” Halstead put his arm around him, pulling him close.
Matthew did most of his work at home, since a lot of it was just writing, sometimes he didn’t go to the church all week unless he had a funeral to do. He liked the relaxed atmosphere which gave him plenty of time to work on his sermons and not be stuck in an office all day. He liked his job a lot, and he felt bad that he’d be relying on replacements for the past few weeks, but his congregation was very understanding of his current situation, so he tried not to feel too guilty about taking some time off.Â
When it came to medical problems, Matthew’s go to response was to ignore them an hope they’d go away eventually, and he’d gotten by that way for years, so he was genuinely shocked when he got this sick for this long. He hated doctors, but his condition had deteriorated so much, he was having real trouble breathing and his fever was so high, he knew he didn’t have a choice, but he also knew he wouldn’t be able to go alone and he was so glad he had someone like Hal in his life to be his rock when he didn’t feel like he could go on anymore.
Matthew set the sparse plate he had on his lap in front of him on the coffee table, he knew he wasn’t going to eat anything, and turned himself so he was facing Hal, but could lean his head against the back of the couch, and blushed a little when Hal kissed him, “I’m sure you did,” he said, quietly, “but I’m glad you were with me, I probably would have talked myself out of going without you. I don’t mean to be such a lame date though, I promise the next one will be more entertaining than this.” He shifted again and laid his head on Hal’s shoulder, enjoying the contact and feeling very safe in Hal’s arms.
