              ICONS: A CHEATERâS GUIDE â
In most cases, Iâve found that the whole iconning process has been made fairly complicated. Yes, batch editing is a wonderful breakthrough that works for a lot of people, but ( from what I understand ) itâs also still very time consuming. And in some ways, it can be a pain. Itâs never really worked well enough for me, anyway. So, Iâm just here to share all the ways Iâve cut corners to get to the same end product. This is for the standard 100x100 square icon but can be used for others. This is mostly geared toward those who find icons to be overwhelming and donât throw them together themselves, but there could be things in here that may help out those seasoned in icon making.
It might get lengthy, so Iâll shove it under a cut.
*** Before we start, you should know that I use a MacBook Pro and Photoshop CS6. Some things might not work for you, but just about everything here can be altered to fit your unique iconning needs.
STEP 1: CAPS.
There are many different ways to get caps, and I use just about all of them.
Option 1 is usually cap sites, such as screencapped ( which is where the caps I am using today originated ), ladymanson, and kissthemgoodbye. These are great and provide with excellent quality, but they also sometimes completely leave out that expression or action you were looking for. Always remember, when using these sites, credit the cap makers. They worked way too hard for someone to claim the end product.
Option 2 is screen recording. It should be noted, I work with a MacBook Pro, which came with Quicktime. It does not work on DVDs, but it does work on everything else. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and other third party sites. To use Quicktime, simply open it. FILE > NEW SCREEN RECORDING. It will allow you to select the part of the screen you wish to record and just record away. When youâre done, simply stop the recording ( my stop button shows up on the top, right hand side of the screen ), play it back, and save it. This gets you ready for the next option.
Option 3 is a capping program. Why is it not in the same place as Option 2? Well, because Iâm about to halfway suggest torrent sites. Like you werenât thinking it already. Legally, I donât condone it, but you know. Anyway, Iâve got a nifty tutorial specifically for a free alternate capping program to VLC that you can find over HERE. Just be sure that you everything as a PNG file. Not a JPEG. Iâll touch down on that in a second.
Option 4, and the only one I donât suggest, is actually capping your screen. Itâs great if youâre looking for one specific look or frame, but itâs so time consuming in the long run. If youâre wanting tons and tons of icons, donât do this. Save yourself.
*** I suggest separating out caps in folders by season and episode, if your FC is in a series. This allows for a cleaner work space and more ease when finding them for future steps.
STEP 2: PREP.
I mentioned it above, but youâre going to want your caps in PNG form. Again, I only know from a Mac standpoint how to do this, but this is typically simple enough that you can find a quick how-to on Google. For the Mac friendos â Open Finder, get to your caps. Select all the caps in your folder. Right click > Open. This will pull all of them up in Preview. Again, select all caps. File > Export Selected Images... This will pull up the export window. Make a new folder ( you donât want to have to go fishing for which caps you want ), change the format at the bottom to PNG, and save. You can now delete the original JPEGs, if you want.
Make a copy of the folder you put the caps in and put one folder in a different place, so you donât mess with them unless you need to. One folder will be used as a backup file, or in the case you want to make an edit with one of those caps later on. The other will be used for cropping. Which brings us to...
STEP 3: CROP.
First, I want you to just open these files like normal. Thatâs just File > Open... and then select as many as you want. PS will only open 200 things at once, I believe. So it will stop you. Cropping is simple. All you have to do is make sure your crop setting is 1x1 ( you can also use exact pixels for this, if square isnât what you want ) like so:
Then you just drag your box wherever you want. Because I make and keep so many icons, Iâm not very picky about how anything is cropped. They look different and more #aesthetic when theyâre resized anyway.
STEP 4: RESIZE.
This is my personal favorite part. See, Photoshop has this nifty thing called Actions. They can turn this
into this
With one click. There are plenty of people who can run you through an Actions tutorial better than I can, but weâre gonna give it the olâ college try, alright? For others who use different programs, I only know what I work with. Maybe someone out there knows some alternatives, but this is all Iâve got.
If you look in your PS window, hereâs a little arrow or play button to the right, next to your coloring and lighting options that looks like this:
Shake hands, give it a hug, ask it to marry you. Thatâs your new best friend. It might take you a couple of tries to get this right, but donât worry. Nothing is irreversible. Choose a cap that has already been cropped and click your Actions button. It will pull up a drop down menu with a few different presets. You donât want those. Youâre making a new one.
If I were you, Iâd go through the steps of how you want to resize your icons before starting in on this part. But, things can be altered afterward, in case something doesnât quite work right. Again, all weâre using this Action to do is resize.
Thereâs a line of links at the bottom of the Actions menu. The ones you want are the file, the thing that looks like a piece of paper, and the circle. First, select the file. Itâll pop up a window titled âNew Setâ. Name it whatever you like. Once you have that done, click the page or âcreate new actionâ button. It gives you a few options here, but all I ever mess with is the name, if even that. Start recording, and here we go.
Iâm sticking to how mine is set up. You can change it however you see fit later on, and I will tell you all about that as well. Just hold up. For now, youâre making a simple 100x100 icon. The exact flow of my icon action is:
Sharpen â You HAVE to do this once before starting your recording. Afterward, it should be at the top of your filter menu as the auto filter. So, go ahead and test it: Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen. Check the drop down menu under âFilterâ after to be sure it has been set. When you record, you have to use the shortcut ( Mac: command + f // Win: Ctrl + f ).
Image Size â Image > Image Size ( Mac shortcut: option + command + i // Windows: ctl + alt + i ). Change it to 102x102, if you want 100x100 icons. Give yourself 2 more pixels than you want for the end product. The reasoning for this is, sometimes PNG files like to have an extra piece of canvas around them after resizing, and cropping off one extra pixel on all sides in the event that it doesnât will not hurt anyone.
Canvas Size â Image > Canvas Size ( Mac shortcut: option + command + c // Windows: ctl + alt + c ). Make sure itâs set to pixels, 100x100.
Running you through this one more time in a cleaner fashion. AFTER MAKING SURE SHARPEN IS SET AS YOUR AUTO FILTER. IT WILL NOT WORK OTHERWISE.
MAC USERS
command + f
option + command + i
give one extra pixel than you need
option + command + c
set the real icon size by pixel
WINDOWS USERS
ctrl + f
ctrl + alt + i
give one extra pixel than you need
ctrl + alt + c
set the real icon size by pixelÂ
Once all this is done, press the stop button. You now have an Action. To test it, go to your next already-cropped cap. Zoom in to the actual size ( Mac sc: command + 1 // Win: ctl + 1, probably. Now Iâm just guessing. ) so that you can actually see what itâs doing, select the first item underneath your new Action folder, and hit the play button at the bottom.
Tada!
If you want to go back and fix something â say, your image size, just double click that section of the action, and it will pull the window up again. Things that donât have a menu, such as âsharpenâ wonât do this. You can delete them, however.
All you have to do now, for every icon now and in the future that you want this size, is pull up the Action menu, choose the one you want, and hit play. Eventually, you will pick up a flow, jumping from one work window to the next â Click, full size, Action, save.
Yes, I do want you to save and close these after resizing. Do not mess with these icons anymore. Once you have that full folder done, copy your new icons folder, put the first one in a safe place for backup purposes. The new one will be used for your
STEP 5: PSD.
Now, Iâm the worldâs worst at coloring icons. Graphics for promos and backgrounds are easy, but it takes me a long time to figure out lighting that actually works for what Iâm looking for. While I cannot tell you how lighting and coloring works here, I have found plenty of incredible helpers scattered throughout the tumblrsphere. A few of my personal favorites, which include @octomoosey, @dear-indies and @itsphotoshopâ, have hundreds of different things you can throw over your icons. Dig away.
We arenât throwing everything on all of your icons right here, right now. Weâre just putting together the PSD. So, just choose one icon which features your museâs lovely FC up close and personal and in their most common lighting / coloring. The less you have to fight with lighting later on, the better.
The PSD I will be showcasing for you today was made by @marlbcros way back in the day, and Iâm a sucker for low saturation and high contrast. Slightly altered, but otherwise, not my work.
First: Base icon. No PSD whatsoever.
Second: Base PSD.
Third: Altered PSD.
Fourth:Â Dotted texture overlay + self-made border.
See? Nothing too fancy, and it still takes those base icons and makes them look âqualityâ or whatever. Now, I may not be able to tell you much about lighting and all that fun business, but I can tell you how to make an easy border.
Back to PS, way at the bottom of your list of tools, there should be a box button that looks a little something like this:
Move over, Actions, thereâs a new heartthrob in town. Just click over your image and a dialogue box will pop up, asking for the size. You want 100x100 ( or whatever size youâve made your icons ). How it pops up will be different on a user to user basis. Just ensure that up in the top corner, the fill is set to no color:
You will notice, mine is set to black, but this can be changed to whatever color you want. I suggest neutral tones, but this is all personal choice. The number next to that is the thickness of your border. The straight line means your border is solid. You can also have a dotted or dashed line. Play around with all of these, get a feel for different things. See what you like best. Have fun with it.
Other options when making borders are multiple colors ( just make another, thinner border over the first ), different blending modes, layer options, etc. Play around with anything you can get your hands on. Test out some things under the layer styles and filters from your top menu.
When youâre done putting together a mix of lighting and stylizing you enjoy, donât merge your layers. Save your PSD as is. Ensure it saves as a PSD file. Make a copy of it, in case you accidentally merge, save, and close one. I have done this many times. Just always be sure you have more than one copy of your PSD. You can also go back in and alter it later on. But once you have these, you can now select all layers of the PSD â with the exception the background layer â and drag and drop them onto your other resized icons.
Merge them, save them. What you should have now is a folder of unedited, uncropped caps; a folder of capped and resized icons; a folder of icons with your PSD over them; and the PSD itself for later use, plus a few copies, just in case.
And thatâs it. Youâre done.
WELL, I ALWAYS SAID IâD DO IT. Now, Iâm still kind of questioning it, but Iâm doing it anyway. Iâm starting up my own commissions. Honestly, Iâd tell all of you that I need the money, but really? I just like making things, and thatâs all there is to it. And if youâre almost halfway decent at something, never do it for free. Bearing in mind â right here, right now â I am so slow. But Iâm willing to bust my ass when I need to. You will not pay for anything until what we agree on is through, and you will not be sent them until after I receive payment. Now that Iâve laid down the proverbial law, letâs get down to business.
While commissions are being run through @revelationsrphâ, all of my blogs are connected through it. You will most likely hear back from me via one of those. Now, whatâs available? Check it under the cut:
ICONS:
Base, PSD, or we can get fancy. I donât really have samples of fancy, but we can do it. And yes, I can make them sizes other than 100 x 100. Round icons, fancy borders, etc. are also available, though they will have different pricing than a regular PSD.
.gif icons are also available. Because I donât keep those stored, feel free tocheck out my recent edits, which include a few gifsets.
PROMOS / MOBILE BANNERS / EDITS / MANIPS:
All counted as the same basic thing. You can get these for yourself, your friend, the man who lives down the street. Whatever you like! Samples can be found here and here.
THEMES
Examples: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Other styles, such as no container, lighter background, etc. ARE available. All backgrounds are the same price, but the more complex the coding, the higher Iâll have to hike up the price.Â
More will be added as I go, including playlists ( you will only be paying for the graphics, as the music is not mine ) as well as video promos ( again, paying for my time, not copyrighted works ). Stay tuned!

Because I am no longer a strong presence the Sons of Anarchy fandom, I am removing the SOA masterlist from this blog. I donât have enough interest in the happening regarding the fandom to keep up with it. And being the only person running this blog at the moment, the list is more of a hassle than anything now.

Alright, so I found this wicked capping program that actually works for mac ( and pc, but my main priority was finding something that worked with my computer â which hates VLC ). The program is Streamclip, and the download site can be found HERE. As far as Iâve seen, it doesnât carry any viruses. It does slow down my laptop some, but that might just be because Iâm dumb and have thousands of caps and icons saved to it already. Itâs a pretty simple process, so I can walk you through how to save things too.
Open a video with the program.
Choose your in and out points. Iâm not sure what the windows shortcut is, but I know that on mac, itâs âiâ = in point, âoâ = out point. You can also just do the whole video if you want.
File > Export to Other Formats...
Itâll open a window with more options than youâre going to need. Your first order of business, change the format to Image Sequence.
Right next to that is an options button. Thatâs what you need next. In that, it gives you image format and frames per second. JPG or PNG for the image format. I stick to PNGs because photoshop tends to save them in higher quality.
With frames per second â the higher the number, the more caps you get. You donât want twenty caps of the same face, so itâs best to make the number 1, 2, or 3. This all depends on how fast the scene is, how short the video is, how animated your fc is, etc.
Thatâs all you need for that section, so close it out. Make sure your frame size is set to unscaled. And thatâs all you need there.
Once you hit âOKâ, itâll open up the save window. There, you can make a new folder for your caps ( if you havenât made one already ), set the base name for your files. The program will number them as it goes.
Hit save and let the program do its thing in the background.
Thatâs it.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
If you stop and restart saving, you have to go through both windows again. If you want to start where it left off with the same base name you chose before, it will replace the caps you already have. If you donât want that to happen, tweak the new base name a little bit.
Your settings will stay in place until you close the program out. So if you close it after every video, youâll have to reset it for the next one. Opening another video while the program is still open should shut down the first and keep the settings you had.
You are 100% okay with my muse being sexist, racist, etc. toward yours. I want to keep interactions in character, but playing a muse who is basically the scum of the earth and everything this site seeks to destroy makes me a little nervous about these things.Â
