I'm less concerned about a stand-up comedian slightly embellishing the truth sometimes to make a joke land, but like.

when your entire brand is "speaking truth to power" and presenting instances of racial discrimination as authentic, emotionally moving moments in your life that are reflective of larger trends in society...this directly undercuts that. and to some people, it makes the larger truths less believable

and then falling back on the "it's just comedy" bit, minhaj's style is only comedic in parts-- he hits these very serious notes, and there's an understanding that his routines are crafted for the sake of communicating important realities, and that's what he's marketed himself as, and that's why people show up--and when that's no longer understood between him and his audience, what's the point?

going beyond his brand though, fabricating childhood stories (also about discrimination) and then directly implicating a real living woman, showing her picture to your audience of thousands (albeit blurred, but there's enough information contained there), and being unconcerned when she faces death threats and he further humiliates her...? jesus fucking christ.

even tho it does *also* function like a social media (you can follow people and comment), at least it's removed from algorithm, and you can design and create your own space for whatever purpose

though yeah, the death of social media is scary and shitty as many of us artists make living off it, but we all need to make an effort to take the internet back. connect with people (tho discord is also being shit now), make your own site at the outskirts of the internet...

idk what the answer is except to start building our own sites and forums. i'd genuinely love to see forums make a comeback. making one isnt hard - there are free host sites, and while i was a teen and the forums were all the rage, i had my own little forums where people would come and write/create/roleplay. ive been thinking of making one again, tho promoting it is hard, since people prefer social media these days.

in any case, we need to move from the social media ruled by the corps and algorithms and take the internet back. tumblr is currently the best site, but even it won't last forever. all we have is what we make.

and yeah, this is really showing me how fragile the internet is. even neocities/indie forums can have servers shut down, but it seems to be at least more durable than social media which is subject to changes from the money-hungry capitalists at every turn, based on their whims.

it's wild to me that the internet is entering an apocalyptic era which wasn't something any of us growing up in 2000es when internet was at its peak with innovation and information exchange could imagine

start making zines, organize, make communities, make non-social websites. if you're an artist, make your own website and start a mailing list. make multiple backups, make different e-mails, save everything, get an external hard drive. start downloading sites which you enjoy (i can't say how many sites i loved have gone down). save pictures, texts, everything. information is disappearing.

Unpopular BSD opinion: Hemingway should have been made the leader of the Guild instead of Fitzgerald. His name is more recognized around the world and it makes more sense for him to want to capture Atsushi considering he really big into game hunting. My headcannon is that Atsushi‘s the last living white tiger on the planet and Ernest wants to hunt him so he make a taxidermy rug out of him.

Like I could see his character reveling with excitement to hunt Atsushi down. When the Guild members catch him him, he insists they let him shoot.

It would also be really interesting to see Atsushi and Hemingway interact . I’ve read both their works, which are completely different from each others’. Hemingway wrote about machismo and modernism while Atsushi wrote about Mysticism and set his stories in ancient China.

really odd how ppl will advocate for sexual freedom and the ability to determine your own sexuality but then turn around and make fun of and/or insult ppl who don't have sex, ppl who don't have sex often, and ppl who don't have until sex later in life. you can't pick and choose whose sexuality is more valid. ik that sex and having a lot of sex is demonized to hell and back but the solution to that is not to demonize ppl who abstain from sex, ppl who don't have much sex, and ppl who stay virgins into adulthood for whatever reasons. ppl who don't have sex/a lot of sex or haven't had sex are already stigmatized as is. if you're gonna claim to be all-for sexual freedom but then look down on ppl who don't fit your criteria for how much a person should have sex then you're not truly for sexual freedom bc sexual freedom isn't just about letting ppl have as much sex as they want and how they want, it's also about letting ppl decide for themselves what their boundries are and if or when they want to have sex or not

i just realized that since big hero 6 takes place in 2032, if it was real hiro's parents just recently died or would soon because they died when he was 3 and he would be turning 4 in 2022

I will choose the Boy Next Door type over the Bad Boy type any day.

With a Bad Boy I get there’s this intrigue of danger when you’re with one and as someone who grew up sheltered AF I totally felt it. Seeing someone be edgy and rebellious can feel good when you’re around people that are conformist. But IRL, guys like this are very emotionally unstable and put in little to no effort in trying to better themselves. I’ll feel bad for them, but I’m too lazy to want to try to change him and I’ll drive myself crazy doing that. It’s why they’re better left in fiction.

A Boy Next Door is pretty approachable. He’ll wave at you and smile out of politeness while walk past his house as he mows the lawn or tending to his garden. You can be yourself around him. He’s not looking to be fixed at all and he doesn’t see you as a prize. He’s willing to listen to what you have to say. Unfortunately I’ve haven’t really come across any books where such characters exist (I intend to write books with male characters like this of course) but if any of you can recommend some I’d appreciate it. He’s the one you want to be with both IRL and in fiction.
