I think the re-do was much more successful in relation to the theme of the assignment, since it focused more on the concept of making something out of immaterial mediums. Also, it’s not as crafty as the first one.

Self-Directed Practice 5: Undo/Redo Melt EL wire, steel wire, tape

For this assignment, I decided to re-do the immaterial piece. This one focuses more on the light rather than what it’s in, on, or around. It depicts two ice cubes melting and is open to the audience’s interpretation. In order for the work not to be too flat like most neon artworks are, a portion of the pool of water hangs over the table and gives it more dimension.

Self-Directed Practice 3: Under the Influence House Plants Watercolor and graphite on watercolor paper

My influencing artist for this assignment was Rachel Whiteread. Her work has a lot to do with domesticity and memory in way that focuses on negative space and minimalism. The focus of this artwork was the house plants. I think house plants are part of this whole minimalist lifestyle that is very in now. You can find a lot of Instagram accounts focused on minimalist houses and apartments that are bursting with these kinds of plants. From a more personal standpoint, house plants and gardening in general has always been a big thing in our household, especially with my grandmother. I’m also starting to get into it too. The houses in the artwork are a nod to Rachel Whiteread’s famous pieces like Ghost and House.

I was hoping that the cellophane would be more reflective and that the light would be project more light with various colors. Unfortunately it did not do as I hoped. It became too ornamental.
