Review

Overall, I found this assignment with my work generally executed reasonably successful being able to clearly show micro environments through the film negatives by photographing images of products which causes harm to the environment.

Things I could potentially improve and work more on:

I think using chemicals which were harmful to the environment and also reacts to heat would be an interesting substance to use for the film that can also create a really interesting result.

The duration of time I heated the films were really inconsistent. Even though it still resulted in a good finish I just thought that maybe if i had specific timing for the heating it would be more sensible.

Proposal

Assignment 3 for CCDN244 was to explore re-mediation through Lomograph photography.

The Idea I explored for this Lomography project was looking at products that produces harmful wastes into the environment. e.g Smoking, Washing products or Batteries. My idea is to take pictures of products which produce harmful wastes and causing pollution with a Lomo camera. With the film I will use the products I took pictures of and use it to physically re-mediate the film. I will then further re-mediate the films by burning the them in-between two pieces of metal sheets. This will hopefully create a new aesthetic when burnt thoroughly resembling a new micro environment/ landscape. The message I wanted to show within these photos is that over using certain things can lead pollution and lead serious consequences.

Main influence for my photography re-mediation was Mary Taffes work. She photographed images of streams and locations where there were algae growth and factory works causing severe pollution. This pollution mixed with the algae create unreal colours and patterns and through photography the images look like poisonous landscapes from another planet.

To showcase my films images I plan to exhibit them through a light box. The box has 5 circle holes to show the photos, where the light will illuminate them up from the bottom. I wanted to make it feel like the photos are in like a biology set-up where the people are looking into petri dishes and examining a micro environment.

I tried other re-mediation too with my other films using the products u took pictures of.

First image I took an image of a friend smoking. I re-mediated this image by using a cigarette and burn the film. After inverting the film in Photoshop I found the ashes of the cigarette become white and I really likes how they resemble stars.

Second image, I took pictures of batteries taken apart and I used the battery fluids within and smeared it onto the film. I expected some sort of chemical reaction but nothing had happened.

Third image is a practice re-mediation where I just washed the film under tap water. It became really slimy and fragile, I was able to scratch the image really easily.

In the fourth image I took images of a car exhaust pipe. I tried re-mediating it by putting the film against the pipe. The result was unsuccessful because nothing happened.

For the last image I look images of a friend washing his hand with soap. I applied the soap onto the film in 2 forms, bubbles and non bubbles and I found the film with bubbles look better because when it dried up it left behind the outlines of them.

I really didn't like how my last result of re-mediation turned out all warped and deformed. So I thought of an idea where I'd put the film between 2 pieces of metal and heat it up.

I really liked the outcome of this because it created something new and it reminded me of my precedent I looked at, Mary Taffe where she looked into photography of streams which have been polluted by factory works into algae growth.

The textures on the film looks like some sort of new environment if some one were to examine it really closely, a map of an area if some one were to look at it in that context. I felt by doing this it some how represents the pollution or contribution of this product adding onto the pollution in the world. This would be seen as the pollution result and damage being done.

With the butane gas film, I simply just used a gas stove to burn it up a bit, I liked the looks of this but I wasn't sure about how the film become all deformed from the heat.

Soap and any washing solution people use on the everyday are also a big contribution to pollution. So the idea was to use products that causes environmental harm which I captured images of and re-use it onto the film.

I used soap solution before it was made into bubbles and rubbed it onto one film and made the other into bubbles and put it onto the other.

I found the results where I made the soap into bubbles were more effective because when it dried up it left behind the shapes of the bubbles which look like tiny craters.

I tried to re-mediate these 2 film strips hoping there would be some sort of awesome chemical reaction with the products of batteries and spray paint.

Inside the battery was some zinc and manganese dioxide which I cut out of the battery and spread across the image in the film. There were no reaction from that.

I was told from someone that using spray paint on film strips wouldn't eventually have the paint eat away at the film and I was hoping there would be some sort of cool effect from it.

In the end these results didn't come out with anything that I found particularly interesting.

These couple of images are also by Mary Taffe. I really find her photography of algae growth affected by factory farming. They create really aesthetic photos which show a lot of different vibrant colours.

First image remind me of some sort of candy, chocolate and banana candy. It looks really violent with 2 different colours smashing into each other and at the same time showing some part of what looks like a surface of something.

Second image. This image is really nice look but at the same time looks disgusting. The colour combination just seems really poisonous with different shades of purple threaded together and slowly spreading all over the image like some sort of disease. The yellowish green substance in the center also looks dangerous mixing into the colours.

I like how the image looks like it's taken from a reasonable distance showing some sort of birds eye view landscape marking. I want to go towards the direction of this kinda of aesthetic where it shows a new environment looking into something that has been created.

Pollution plaguing, Big Stone Lake. Mary Taffe

Really abstract image from Mary Taffe, She took images deom the big stone lake during summers and with it next to increased activities of factory farming. It affects the growth of algae and creates strange colours in the water.

A lot of random blotches of different shaped colours. They look very poisonous as it is a really bright neon coloured turquoise. On the upper right corner there is more bright green colour and also looks really hazardous and poisonous to be around.

I like this image of the algae growth and for my series I want to create a similar landscape which cannot be made out and shows a bit of mystery about it. Very biological like.

Development

While re-mediating some of photos of the films I captured found even though in my imagination of the remediation being very effective the result didn't come out the way I wanted it to at all.

Disappointing that the shoot come out with decent photos but the method of re-mediating them was ineffective.

Thankfully I had another plan to do another shoot with another proposed idea.

Photograph by Wolfgang. This image looks like a surface of something almost like green marble. Has similar characteristics to marble where it has dark crack like lines scribbled everywhere within the stone.

I think personally the series of dark lines in the image shows the contours of a landscape from a three dimensional perspective.

The image is of green colour but there is different shade blotches of green that become denser with the activity of the black lines.
