My office is participating in this year's CHOC Walk and we'd be grateful if you could donate, participate, or share the event to raise money for kids and families!
The first time I visited CHOC was when I worked at Disneyland. We volunteered to draw for kids and help with a holiday party. The kids and families are so sweet and so caring of one another. I still remember one older patient who came down so we could visit the upper floors and draw for kids who couldn't leave their rooms to see the festivities downstairs.
It is so difficult on families to see their kids suffering from illnesses or struggling with medical conditions, and it's so heartbreaking to see children, teens, and young adults fighting and missing out on so many other things. Yet during my visits, they're always in high spirits and they don't anything hold them back.
I can't express enough why it means a lot to me to try and help organizations that help kids.
Hi, all! I am so excited to be participating in CHOC Walk's 30th anniversary event - CHOC Adventure in the Park presented by the Disn
On a non-political note, it took Reddington 6 years to realize he could move the curtains to look outside the window.
I think he's just going to sleep there.
2020 sucks.
Here's Reddington holding signs for a request and a birthday
I often think about simpler times and just being a kid again. And I think about childhood friends I lost touch with.
My first grade class.
I'm sure you can guess the decade based on the fashion.
One of my closest friends this year was a kid named Jesse. I only knew him for this year before he eventually switched schools, but every day after class, we'd walk to our rides together. I was such a spoiled brat as a child, really bossy too. But he tolerated me, and truthfully, he was probably my best friend at the time.
During the year, our class was joined by the daughter of an NFL player. My family and I were super big on sports, especially basketball and American football. Of course I wanted to ask her if I could get her dad's autograph. I remember my family even reminding me throughout the year.
One day at the end of the school year, we all came in to find autographed photos on our desk. I was so excited about it, and I couldn't wait to get home and tell my family.
On our usual walk to our cars after school, I was telling Jesse how awesome it was to get the autograph, but I think in my excitement, I bent my photo and was a little bummed about it.
Even though he also says excited for the autograph, without hesitation, Jesse offered his to me. Not a trade, nothing in return. He just wanted to give it to me because he was my friend and he knew it meant a lot to me.
People don't forget kind gestures, no matter how small they seem. Even if you're just a 7-year-old.
I think back to the fun of that school year, so the birthday parties, all the games we used to play... More than that, I think of the people I used to know and wonder what they're all up to, how they're doing.
Well, wherever you are, Jesse, thank you.
In other news, Reddington celebrated his 6th birthday last week. We ended up improvising a cake with the ingredients we already had at home and then just slathered it in yogurt.
What do you think he wished for?
I can't really speak on the words that were exchanged, because that isn't my place, but I think it's worth sharing what was said.
---
Not to take away from the main purpose behind the protest, but I wanted to learn more about the person in uniform speaking to us. I guess I just personally like to learn more about individuals to get a better understanding of their words and actions.
I believe the deputy chief is Regina Scott, who served as a US Army combat medic and pharmacy technician, and is a 33-year veteran on the force. She's the first Black woman to achieve the rank of commander in the LAPD, and she is the first Black woman to ever become deputy chief for the LAPD.
Upon achieving her rank, she said, “Not even of women of color — I didn’t think it would be possible for just any woman. Then I started to see the women promoted to lieutenant, captain and then commander and deputy chief.”
I think it's also worth noting that when asked to kneel with the protestors as a sign of solidarity, she was the only one who agreed to do so. Her colleagues looked on, seemingly uncomfortable with the situation.
---
There's been more and more talk about the steps that need to be taken to fix the problems faced by so many – some a bit more extreme than others, and where people are in agreement on what the issues are, the proposed solutions have been polarizing to say the least. I do have my own opinions, but I'm still learning a lot and it's not my place to speak on this. But I do hope to learn more in the coming weeks and beyond, and hopefully I can share more from the people I meet and hear from.
The mask my mom made for me. She wanted to make sure she got the "X-Men" print somewhere on the outside where it would be visible, haha
Listening is just as important as marching. People don't often think about how just being there to hear what others have to say is a big part of contributing to a movement. You learn about how things affect others, and maybe ultimately yourself in ways you didn't know. And you'll hear the stories of names that we don't hear every day in the media coverage.
Like Anthony Weber.
A.J. Weber was only 16 when he was fatally shot over ten times by police in 2018. Officers came to the scene after a 911 caller reported someone had pointed a gun at them. At the scene, deputies allege A.J. Weber reached into his waistband, and the fired in response. No firearm was found on him.
He was a son, brother, uncle, friend... He was a father, whose daughter was not even a year old when his life was taken.
His family honored him today and reminded everyone of this story, one of many that have been forgotten over the years. We heard from people who have lost friends and family, we heard from children and their hope for making things better, we even heard from law enforcement, whose message was to remember that change comes only if you keep fighting and never let the movement fade.
We were reminded that everyone is unique and different and capable of making their own choices and we should judge them for who they are.
Through it all, everyone made sure to keep it peaceful. As a passing car tossed out a glass bottle, everyone immediately turned to say there would be none of that. It was made clear that anyone who caused trouble was not part of the cause and was not welcome at the gathering. They made sure everyone had a mask, water, and even sandwiches.
And as we left, they made sure everyone could get home safely.
This is the majority of what is going on all over the world. Not the chaos that floods the news. They're opportunities to share and learn from one another.
Texas isn't the only state to bring their horses.
If you're going out protesting with friends/family, drop me a message so my friend and I can send y'all a kit with some supplies.
We're trying to include things we feel might help, and so far we've got face masks, eye wash, gauze and bandages, cold compress packs, water, snacks, index cards with legal contacts and rights...
If you have any suggestions on things to add, please comment! I don't have a lot to spend on these, but I'll try my best to get them. Or if you know a good place that carries these supplies, that would be great.
Thank you!
Note: If you're in Southern California, I can get you the bags directly. If you're in another state, message me to work something out. Either I can have supplies shipped directly to you to expedite the process, or I can mail you the bag myself.
It's not the best, but here's an example of one.

I haven't drawn him in a while, haha.
I'll probably just open up the stream for suggestions and tutorials first if anyone wants to drop in and ask about something. I'm kind of nervous about drawing again, so I need some practice...
