Sometimes the holiday season can be a hard time and this year has shaped up that way for many of us. If you're alone and lonely, ill, lost or unsafe, I'm thinking of you. I've spent a Christmas or 2 curled up underneath the tree in sadness and pain or fear and it feels for me like one of those years.
I carry each emotion along with me, the joys as well the sadness and the mistakes I've made...all the ghosts that swirl around me at this time of year.
...Anyhow, there is not a lot I might say that could make a difference but to reach for the light, make a difference to anyone who might be more on the margins than yourself.
I wish you a peaceful heart to get you through the night and hang on because everything changes eventually and sometimes it gets just a little bit better.
We are all just a little fragile and broken, in need of lov and safety and that's ok.
The Quirk (1978) written by Gordon Merrick. Cover art by Victor Gardino
Merrick was on my reading list in the 1980s!
I've been thinking about Gordon Merrick quite a bit lately. I read a few of his books in high school. I also remember seeing them on the shelves of mall bookstores in the 1980s, well before gay books were in the mainstream!
Mark Bingham died on September 11. His heroic efforts on United Flight 93, as well as his athletic physique, were noted for having prompted a reassessment of gay stereotypes. A gay man, Mark came out to his family and friends upon college (where he played Rugby) graduation at the age of 21. He went on to become a public relations executive founding his own company, the Bingham Group. During the September 11 attacks in 2001, he was a passenger on board United Airlines Flight 93. Bingham was among the passengers who, along with 3 others formed the plan to retake the plane from the hijackers, and led the effort that resulted in the crash of the plane into a field in Pennsylvania, thwarting the hijackers' plan to crash the plane into a building in Washington, D.C., most likely either the U.S. Capitol Building or the White House. According to the 9/11 Commission Report, after the plane's voice data recorder was recovered, it revealed pounding and crashing sounds against the cockpit door and shouts and screams in English. "Let's get them!" a passenger cries. A hijacker shouts, "Allāhu ʾakbar!" ("God is great"). Jarrah repeatedly pitched the plane to knock passengers off their feet, but the passengers apparently managed to invade the cockpit, where one was heard shouting, "In the cockpit. If we don't, we'll die." At 10:02 am, a hijacker ordered, "Pull it down! Pull it down!" The 9/11 Commission later reported that the plane's control wheel was turned hard to the right, causing it to roll on its back and plow into an empty field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 580 miles per hour (930 km/h), killing everyone on board. The plane was 20 minutes of flying time away from its suspected target, the White House or the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

The Florida Legislature is about to pass its “Don’t Say Gay” bill… it starts with a history of politics and religion creating hate and fear. A message of us versus them, denying basic rights while ordinary people look away. It is not merely divisive but dangerous and a step backwards in its attempt at dehumanizing LGBTQ youth, already at higher risk of suicide and alienation and a step forward into a world where “don’t say gay” is as vicious as its intent.
Portrait of Craig…Richard Stabbert
This is so beautiful that it's moving. Art is like magic.

Who’s got that extra skin? I’d love to see yours too. 😍😍😍
