Joys and woes of craft

The Joys of the Craft:

Sheer joy of making things

Make useful things that help other people

Fascination of building complex objects of interlocking moving parts and watching them work

Always learning due to nonrepeating nature of the task

Working in such a tractable medium, so readily capable of realizing grand conceptual structures that have real results.

The Woes of the Craft:

One must perform perfectly (one typo and all hell breaks loose)

One rarely sets the objective, provides resources and furnishes information (authority is only acquired through accomplishment of responsibility)

Dependence on others, who may not be performing at same level

Designing grand concepts is fun, finding little bugs is just work,

Debugging has a linear convergence, bugs get harder and harder to find,

Products are usually obsolete upon completion (this is not that bad since the newer better design has the same lag time to realization).
