Alters and shrines over the years have played dual roles. They serve as landmarks/monuments and spiritual heaven for the deities of the land: commemorating events/people; depicting cultures and spiritual authority governing the people.

After a life well lived and pleasing to the people, one is immortalized and sometimes deemed a deity worthy of worship. He/she is assumed to be seated with the gods who govern and protect the earth (a common belief in many cultures and religions) and alters are raised in reverence of him/her.

This monument is the only shrine located on the John Evans Atta Mills Highway in Accra. It was erected by the people of Asere a clan within the Ga State commemorating Nikoi Olai (Shitse Ododoma).
